I had the same issue with the APMs -- it's almost like it was "too good" with too much suction or something.

It worked very well at cancelling noise, but at the expense of comfort (for me at least)
This is actually good to hear for me. I have a pair of APM on the way that I'm going to use mostly for noise cancelling - it's noisy in my place in the summer. I want the suction power NC. Like the AirPods Pro had at launch, and then they dialed it back.

Yeah but if you get them from Amazon, you can't get a custom engraving.

Here's what I put on mine, and Apple let me do it:

😬$

(yes they're too expensive, but several reviews say they have the best NC vs the Sony and Bose)

I haven’t tried recent BOSE or Sony’s for NC, but APM’s NC is significantly better than in past devices, IMO. Sometimes uncomfortable though, really squeezes the head feeling. I have had them for a week. I also bought Audio Technica’s R70x, no NC, wired headphones to compare sound quality when lossless and spatial audio come out, hopefully today. Need headphones to either cancel air conditioner noise or block air conditioner noise when I need to concentrate on something.

I got the AirPods Pro right at launch, and initially, their NC was stellar. Blocked even midrange sounds so well they sounded like they were barely coming from upstairs or something, rather than just yards away. And, you got the whoosh/suction feeling as the NC went to work, but that didn’t bother me because the NC was so good.

Unfortunately, that caliber of NC didn’t last long, before I started having the fit test fails and static with the APP that many people have had. I assume they also made changes via firmware to the level of NC because even after I got them replaced, the NC was not nearly quite as amazing as at first. And in fact I’ve had to replace both APP twice, now. I hope they get redesigned.

But if the APP had retained their level of NC, I’m not sure I would have ever started considering the APM, given their price. I already have good wired headphones. I could have used the APP to get some peace from this air conditioner, and their sound quality would have been good enough.

So I have some mega expensive APM on the way, hoping that at some point they figure out how to make spatial audio work with the Apple TV. Seems like it may happen.
