Both are overpriced. Samsung has a comparable display for around $700.
Yeah…. No. I’ve spent a lot of time playing with the 4K monitor space lately. Samsung makes terrible displays, because the UI is horrific. I’m talking, call Samsung and the engineers don’t know the controls of the menus to do basic stuff terrible. LG does make some good monitors in the $600 range. But 4K is not 5K. The difference is there. For what it is, the Apple monitor price is fine, because there’s no good 5K displays out there otherwise. But if you only need 4K (and don’t understand why some people want 5k) no worries! there are some great cheaper options.

Just for the love of god Don’t get Samsungs. I seriously don’t know what they were thinking with their UI’s.

Interesting in that this is fairly limited across Apple Authorized Retailers. I called B&H and chatted with Best Buy who both said they are not eligible for this promotion and would not price match.

I would try Best Buy again, maybe you get lucky since they do price match Amazon. You could try the Apple Store but the most you might get on a good day is a 10% match so you are still losing over 150 dollars in discounts compared to Amazon.

I went to the Apple Store yesterday, to make a final decision on the Studio Display. I'm going to pair it with an M2 Pro Mac Mini. They had the Glossy screen right next to the Matte screen. I have a 2015 27" iMac now. The Glossy was just as I expected. I the Matte really had no appeal to me. They're Menlo Park store is very bright. (All windows). And even though I don't have that situation in my home, that was good opportunity to easily compare them. I asked the sales rep who is the typical customer for the Matte finish, and he said most of those go into offices, probably with lots of ceiling lighting. This visit helped me to solidify getting the Glossy again, like my current iMac. The drop of $300 is just what I needed.

I agree.

Slightly off topic - with respect to the possible 120Hz monitor, how will that monitor work with M1P and M1M machines that have no ports that are rated above 60Hz? Or for that matter w/ the latest M2 MPB and Mini that only have HDMI ports that are rated above 60Hz (so no TB support). Trying to figure this one out as it would see odd for Apple to release a monitor that isn't compatible with even the most recent higher end devices.
MacBook Pro M1 can easily drive high refresh displays. I just googled and found tons of people driving even 4K at 144hz via the Thunderbolt ports. You can get TB to displayport cables which work fine.

4K at 144hz is 39.16Gbit/s which a TB4 (displayport 1.4 alt mode) can support. (Max bandwidth is 40Gbit/s on that connection)

5K though … requires 57.08 Gbits/s at 120hz. 85hz would be 39.75 Gbits/s.

Either apple would need to use compression or two cables for it to work at 5K at more than 85hz.

And that’s the problem for 5K

Different sized zones. It's easy to see, but difficult to photograph. Bottom image is inverted to show it a little clearer.

Kind of hard to see what you're talking about, I'm sure the photo crushed/clipped the contrast versus what you're looking at with your Mark-I eyeball.

The Pro Display XDR has 576 zones, or about 188 pixels-square per zone, or 0.862" square.

I've seen various numbers for the MacBook Pro 16" including 2,554 zones (4 LEDs per zone), which at 54 pixels-square would be 0.197" square. That's quite a difference.

I'm really holding out for a "Studio Display Pro" and a "Wallet Buster 9000", with the former being the mini-LED equivalent of a MacBook Pro display the same size as the Studio Display, and the Wallet Buster 9000 being the new prestige 6K (or greater) 32" (or greater) monitor with higher-density mini-LED zones, ProMotion, etc. The 9000 referring to the price.

Or Apple may just punt and release OLED displays two years from now.

Thank you. I was definitely speaking of 5K. Can't imagine Apple would make a 4K display.

The two cables makes sense. So a Studio M1M (in theory) could support two using the four rear TB ports.

$1299 is a reasonable price for an excellent display. The (regular) price of $1,599 is disproportionately high relative to the computer that attaches to it!

$1299 is a decent price for the display, but no-go for me because it doesn’t support multiple inputs.
The new Samsung 5K monitor will be out later this year and will (most likely) undercut Apple on pricing, along with supporting multiple inputs.

$3K is a lot of money, but that's a lot of computer.
That’s cheaper than a refurb from Apple.

I don’t need to replace my M1 Mac Mini…. But I’ve been looking at M2 Pro models anyway, and the price for my config is basically the same price as the Studio from Costco. I don’t need a new computer. I don’t need a new computer.

Studio is the best machine I've ever owned. Zero hassle. The base spec is terrific.

Love my Studio Display. I went glossy, as the nano seemed *to me* to slightly soften text.

Got the VESA version to go with my M1 Mini.

VESA arm from Amazon for $36. Works great: https://a.co/d/byNMe4o

I guess the price drop hasn't reached every item yet. ;)

Seriously, though, this is a good price for the ASD. Apple should have announced the price drop on the same day they announced new Minis. As others have mentioned, it's good to see downward pressure on prices due to recently announced monitors from other companies.

It’s well worth the $19. It’s well made, and it just works. It integrates across all your devices. Smudge on your Apple Watch? A quick wipe and it’s gone. Dirty eye phone screen, finger prints on your iPad ? Cleans them all….

I bought 2 on Amazon US site a 6 days ago for my new MacBook Pro and now the price drops. I paid 1499. Does anyone know if Amazon will refund me the difference ?
From past experience no. Only option is to return.

Just a day after the launch of new MacBook Pro and Mac mini models, Amazon has slashed its pricing on the Apple Studio Display to $1,299.99, down from its regular price of $1,599.00.

This $299 discount on the Apple Studio Display is the steepest we've ever seen and is available only on the lowest-cost model with standard glass and a tilt-adjustable stand.

Upgrading to nano-texture glass for even less glare increases the price to $1,749.00, which is still a solid deal at a $150 savings over the regular price. Versions with the tilt- and height-adjustable stand are priced higher.

I paid $1099 for my 48" LG OLED. IMHO It doesn't get much better.

Yep. Maybe if they too another 4 or 5 hundred off, and include the tilt/height adjustment stand, I might consider buying it.
Or if one can’t provide examples of same quality and specifications at your dream price point then 😒

Get an LG C2 OLED TV. With the latest M2 MacBook Pro or mini, should run 4K 120Hz just fine. And when on sale they’re like $900 or so. Yes it’s a TV so you do lose certain conveniences like waking the Mac doesn’t wake the TV (no CEC HDMI), but there’s ways around it.
Thanks Blackstick. With TVs being larger (eg smallest C2 is 42") it will mean that, at least for how I intend to use the monitor at close viewing position, the pixel density is not as good. But agree the C2 is a very nice TV!
