Tempting. It is something that could last me 10+ years. But hard to spend the dough when it doesn’t seem “future proof” out of the gate.

Buy for your needs today, not whether it will be relevant at some random point in the future. It's a nice monitor and no matter what technology comes next I'm sure you'll be able to find a use for it for many, many years to come. I'm still using a ACD 27" from 2005 or whenever as my 2nd monitor. Obviously it's not used for any critical work but it's fine to for a email or web window, to put pallets on, or to use as a holding area for things I need quick access to.

What sorts of things do you expect to be unable to accomplish in the future with the ASD, and in how many years do you expect that inability to become a significant hindrance?

Apple will only price match 10% and will not allow you to use monthly 0% interest financing, so you will be charged interest on the card purchase.
Good point for those who feel they must buy this on an installment plan. Better IMHO to manage without an ASD until such time as one can buy it and pay off the card immediately -- thereby avoiding any interest charges.

Yes! You’re still within the 14-day return period, and they would much rather price match your order than processing and repackaging a very expensive return.

Mind you, I bought the refurbished display and therefore they only had to refund me $60, and I’ve heard that Apple might only price match up to 10%. However, in my experience they go above that value. My only note is that you must do this in store or over the phone (not text chat), and if you get a difficult representative just call back later.
Thanks, and an update: Apple price matched 10% of the difference due to the lower price being at a third-party seller. So only $30 refunded, but not bad for a 5 minute phone call.
I was content with the original, full price, so I see this a little bonus and thank you for bringing it to my attention!

I don't need anything terribly fancy, but I'm tired of my crummy dell u2421HE. I got it during COVID when I need an external monitor and didn't know any better. I'm eager to see these new 5Ks coming soon.

who on earth wants to pay $1300 for 5 year old tech. if you really need a monitor now, just get a cheap dell ultrasharp while waiting for the new apple monitors, they are definitely coming.

IT's about the now.

It doesn't currently have

1. ~120hz

2. A good camera

3. connection to a 3rd party device like a video game console.

4. up/down stand (without paying ~$2k.)

5. newer screen tech

6. touchscreen

For the price ... these things hold me back.

But especially #1. They've moved to 120hz on the iphone, iPad and MacBook Pro. And the Asus ~$200 monitor connected to my Mini is doing 144hz.

camera I don't care about much. But hearing it has a worse camera than their laptop doesn't make me jump for joy.

not being able to connect to the Nintendo Switch for example doesn't upsell me. Maybe I wouldn't use it. But definitely that flexibility would make me more likely to splurge. IT doesn't seem like an obscure feature or anything either.

up/down stand. I'm probably fine with the regular stand. But considering my $200 Asus not only goes up/down but does portrait mode ...one doesn't expect to pay an extra 2 or 3x the cost my Asus monitor just to get up/down functionality.

I feel like this year or next they will release an OLED/Micro-LED version of this. And this again generates the feeling this isn't the monitor of the future.

And then last I added touchscreen off the top of my head. I hadn't thought of this before, but ...I am picturing 3 years down the road using the monitor sometimes as a control panel like for music or Home stuff or scrolling thru photos. IT's not a show stopper or anything. Maybe I wouldn't use these things if this image in my head did exist in reality. But the rumors of touch screen MacBooks that recently came out, ...well if they are going to do that then they're $1600 monitor ($1300 on sale now) should be able to do this or I would want it to be if this is the case. I want the monitor of the future for this kind of money.

Still curious to hear what Samsung's 5K monitor will cost.

Very likely LESS.

One problem with Apple seeking the full Apple margin in commoditized items like a screen is that it practically begs agile competitors like Samsung to basically copy, seek a lower-but-still-good margin and be able to charge less. From Samsung's perspective, they may see easy profit greater than normal on other monitors while being able to beat Apple on retail price. Not all monitor buyers are "only Apple or bust" fanatics. So there's real opportunity in such spaces.

My question was related to your comment about supposed future requirements, not current requirements:

Now you're listing current requirements which it doesn't fulfill.

That's completely different.

When a current product doesn't meet current requirements, you go buy the competing product which does meet your current requirements.

lol nonsense.

You asked "What sorts of things do you expect to be unable to accomplish in the future with the ASD, and in how many years do you expect that inability to become a significant hindrance?"

Your questions were answered. Whether you didn't want to hear the answer or don't like the answer or just wanted to clown around is not my problem.

I have one of these already on my desk, it just happens to be in the form of my trusty 7-year-old iMac. Patiently waiting for the modders to give me the board I need to turn it into an external display...

More on the way!

Was showing out of stock at Amazon earlier today but now more coming. Costco is also matching this price.

Even with discounts still overpriced. Ideally, these should be the prices:
SD $1000 (Nano/Stand $300 each)
XDR $2500 (Nano/Stand $300 each)

Too bad there is no solid completion for the above in the 5k/6k resolution category. Yes, I know about Samsung and Dell but damn, they look cheap.

Cool story but I don't think anyone should be buying this thing until at least after we get pricing for Samsung's new one.

lol nonsense.

You asked "What sorts of things do you expect to be unable to accomplish in the future with the ASD, and in how many years do you expect that inability to become a significant hindrance?"
Exactly - I asked that in context of comment about it not being "future-proof": "hard to spend the dough when it doesn’t seem “future proof” out of the gate."

You answered with things that you currently want to do which it doesn't support; something completely different from what you orignally wrote. I acknowledged and then provided my thoughts on the current-needs matter.

Sorry that you have trouble clearly articulating your thoughts, but you can't expect people to read your mind. Write what you actually mean to say.

I'm sure you'll feel some need to have the last word of course, so feel free. I've written all I need to on the matter.

A 27-inch mini-LED monitor with ProMotion was supposedly going to launch in Q1 of this year, according to Ross Young. https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...-27-inch-mini-led-display-in-q1-2023.2364171/ I'm guessing that would've been a direct upgrade to the Studio Display, since I doubt they'd make the Pro Display XDR smaller.
I doubt they'd discontinue the Studio Display, so it wouldn't be an update, it would be a different monitor. 120Hz MiniLED would put it in a completely different price point.

I agree.

Slightly off topic - with respect to the possible 120Hz monitor, how will that monitor work with M1P and M1M machines that have no ports that are rated above 60Hz? Or for that matter w/ the latest M2 MPB and Mini that only have HDMI ports that are rated above 60Hz (so no TB support). Trying to figure this one out as it would see odd for Apple to release a monitor that isn't compatible with even the most recent higher end devices.
