I don’t know anybody who bothered to buy an ATV. They don’t see the value over a 29 dollar dongle. And I can’t blame them.

I have 3 because I’m an Apple sheep, but for the vast majority of people, the ATV is definitely way overpriced for their needs.

I hope Apple releases a new device, soon, one that finally turns Steve Jobs’ (supposed) claim on cracking the TV of the future a reality. We’ve waited long enough.

Thanks for that partial thought that really says nothing.

Between iCloud and 256GB USB-C thumb drives to hold my movies and TV shows I very occasionally watch, I still have over half of my 64GB available with almost every app I have on my iPhone also on my iPad.

Do I need 256GB every day? Nope. So, personally, the 64GB tier is perfect on a device that is not my daily driver. and saves me money.
If we’re just going to be mean to each other, then thanks for those details about your personal preferences that I don’t care about at all.

With all new smart 4k TVs supporting both Apple TV+ and airplay 2 I don't see the reason apple TV is still being sold.
One distinct advantage of a device like the Apple TV over a smart TV app is you can take the device with you when you travel and access your stuff anywhere and not put your personal information into a TV not in your control.

I never thought of Apple TV+ and AirPlay 2 as reasons to get an Apple TV, but I guess they are.

Also, unlike Smart TVs and other boxes, the Apple TV doesn't draw the screen like a Commodore 64. I can't stand it when content is loaded slower than I can scroll.

Aside from PlayStation controller support and keyboard support I think they may also support trackpads? All of which my Smart Samsung 4K TV can’t do.

As it should. Not sure why the latest ATV is still selling at full price. It’s old now.

guess Apple need to clear the iPad Mini stock since it doesnt have M1 chip and will miss out on the new OS feeatures.
Like it missed out on a smart dock...

It is an awesome little device. That was NEARLY perfect (USB C, modern design language, pencil 2 support).
But it shouldn't be effectively OS obsolete after less than a year...

We had a gen 1 Roku. It’s been so long I’ve forgotten why we stopped using it. I also tried the FireTV dongles before. Navigation was slow and it overheated and would freeze after 1-2 hours of watching. Plus, I remember wanting to watch Game of Thrones on HBO Now and that service was exclusive to the AppleTV for the first 1-2 months. Also, I redeemed the iTunes codes from Blu-ray purchases (before Movies Anywhere) and back then, you could only play them on AppleTV.

Considering I used to spend $500-800 building Mini-ITX HTPCs (pre-Roku), the AppleTV was a bargain.

The only thing it’s missing, really, is the windowing support. It’s not even close to effectively obsolete.

I was on hold for Apple Support, and got an Apple Pencil which replaced the one I lost, and two days after it arrived, I found the wanderer. I don't seem to be using it as much as I thought I might. *shrug* It does get used, but it's not like I would be completely incapacitated if both were lost and never located. I'd grieve the money loss, and spend time pondering that mythical place where lost stuff seems to go, and why we can't find the stuff when we are looking for it with so much earnestness and purpose. (I found it magnetically mated with my file cabinet, of all places. Smugly laughing at me trying to find it no doubt)

….Because that’s how Apple has always been with their pricing structure.

Look at the iPod Touch, it’s their lease most popular device they sell and it was at full price for how many years without even being discounted, [other than some minor discounts from third-party retailers].

The only time Apple starts slashing prices, is when the new GEN version is Imminent post launch.

Not being mean at all but at least you know why the 64GB model can be completely useful and affordable yet we have no idea why you think it's useless. I could understand if you gave a personal case scenario but just to say the 64GB model "has to go" is not true. There is a demand for the lower end model when it's not your main device.

Both of my Apple TV's work at least as good as when they were new. In fact they are better. They have identical interfaces, they have the Apple Fitness App, which didn’t exist when I bought them, and works flawlessly with my Apple Watch and Powerbeats Pro, they sync with my HomePod Minis for sound.

The Apple TV is more than just a Netflix/Disney streaming device.

Question: Does the Firestick or Chromecast link to External Speakers in a Stereo pair, or to other devices for a more intuitive or interactive experience, or are they just plain $50-100 media devices that are also available on a smart TV for nothing?

Well designed tech can evolve into something more than it started. The Apple TV doesn’t feel old….

And windowing support on the mini size screen? I think I'll live without it just fine. Have so far, so nothing's changed in my book, new version of the OS or not.

No kidding. I inherited an Amazon 'thing', and it's smaller than the Mini and I'm just not that enthralled with trying to use it. It looks more like a toy than anything else. Someone said at the Worst Try that the Mini looked 'too small'. For what? Hand to hand combat? For flying, and reading in bed, it's perfect! I tried the IPP, and when I'm just about comatose, and it tips forward unimpeded, it HURTS!!! The Mini is not as brutal in those circumstances, and the case I have has protected it from bed falls so far very well. But, to each their own. Some liked the Mini 12 iPhone. Yeah, not me. It took me years to migrate to an 'adult iPhone', and I'm not going back. *HAH*

Because if you have an older TV the only way you can get Apple TV is to buy and AppleTV

For me it's much faster loading of YouTube TV streaming channels. Apple TV box loads them in 1-2 seconds. Roku Ultra box takes about 5 seconds (or longer) to load them...and the software built into a TV is probably even slower than Roku Ultra for loading the YTTV channels. That being said, the Apple TV box is too expensive. Wish they can get the price down to $100. Maybe it will happen soon.

As has been said the arcade games are pretty awful overall , certainly don't approach the graphics you can find on the iPad , they remind me of stuff from the Nintendo Wii days

Hopefully with the new improved Apple TV we'll get a radical improvement in games graphics etc ( probably not )
