The Apple TV remote ($60) is 46% of the Apple TV package price ($130).

But given how awkward it was to use the original Apple TV remote, that may be the best part of the deal!

On top of a better user experience and interface, Apple TV doesn't have ads. My new Sony TV has a great picture, but using the smart features will include ads you can't turn off without disconnecting the TV from the internet (and then it's not smart anymore). So I just have it turn on automatically via Apple TV and problem solved.

I have an Apple TV HD, which my receiver upscales, but you can still tell it's not true 4k. I want the 4K ATV but it's so close to September and I have no idea if there's going to be a new one. So i guess I'm going to have to wait before upgrading and hope there's either a new model or some sales.

Iirc, last year Apple Store gave $50 gift cards with AppleTV purchase during Black Friday season.

Latest AppleTV 4K, yes. The one featured on this $129 weekend deal is the much older AppleTV HD version.

It's the 4K version. Check out the link below:

because some people don't want to use their TV's OS.

Maybe it's slow. maybe it's annoying. Maybe is just isn't as good as ATV. Maybe people like using the ATV OS. Maybe people don't want to buy a new tv just to upgrade their TVOS. Maybe ATV provides features the tv doesn't. The list goes on.

all good reasons. And in addition, they now offer parity across multiple ATVs. So if i install an app, delete an app, or rearrange the order... those changes affect all ATVs. So no need to do it multiple times on every tv.

I get your arguments. Your are right in a lot of those. Still you have to accept that apple tv is not as useful for many average joe users, as it was 10 years ago for example. For example since I picked up a sony google tv with many apps and airplay, my apple tv has been collecting dust.
Except I don't think the ATV was that useful 10 years ago. It was too early for most people to really make great use of a ~$200 streaming box. The ATV is more useful than ever today because streaming is way more ubiquitous today.

And ATV has always been the expensive choice among streaming boxes so its market was never the average joe anyway.

I think the point you want to make or are making is today's built-in tv os are (generally speaking) good enough for basic use. I have a Roku tv in the basement and if I want to watch Netflix on it, the experience is essentially the same as the ATV 4k in my office. It's a bit slower to load but not enough to make me buy another ATV box.

yeah I messed with that. I was a little confused by it although I think it worked, but I feel like something screwed it up. Maybe different profiles. But my wife and kid were using that ATV and it was a pre-4k model. And now they secretly abandoned it and use the Roku tv in the basement. I haven't bothered to look at it since they don't seem to need to watch on that tv.

The current AppleTV 4K’s ARC (Audio Return Channel) feature is my reason for upgrading from the previous AppleTV 4K.

With ARC, sound from the TV and Xbox Series X will play through my pair of HomePod minis.

Very true. And I recently found that you can have the Apple TV's with the same or different screens.

I don’t know anybody who bothered to buy an ATV. They don’t see the value over a 29 dollar dongle. And I can’t blame them.

I have 3 because I’m an Apple sheep, but for the vast majority of people, the ATV is definitely way overpriced for their needs.

I hope Apple releases a new device, soon, one that finally turns Steve Jobs’ (supposed) claim on cracking the TV of the future a reality. We’ve waited long enough.
I’ve read a lot of this on many tech sites and forums. I almost bought it but they I compared it to the 4K firestick and that’s way better for the value.
