At least it has an SSD, but even so, at $599, it still seems like a high price, considering how underpowered a dual-core processor is in 2022. And it's probably on its last legs in terms of macOS updates. Fair price, in my opinion, would be closer to $399.
for 399 I would buy it. Basically an iPad price and it comes with a keyboard and mouse

MArket dictates price. Sounds like this was a great deal. It also speaks to Apple as a company if a 4 year old electronic sold out that fast. Now whether that speaks to marketing or quality is a different discussion, but it definitely speaks.

Again, these iMacs had been sold as new for more than 4 years, Apple only discontinued new sales of this model in October 2021. I don't know when Apple stopped making these, but maybe the middle of 2021.

2017? isnt that the crappy dual core model? Sounds like a bad deal to buy a 2-core processor in 2022

Not just "dual core". These are lowest end , entry MBA mobile CPU and GPU. Soldered down RAM. [ Most of the iMac line up left behind using laptop processors over a decade ago. ] Apple through high volume MBA parts at this so that they could discount the systems to the edu market ( cash strapped school systems ) and still walk away with profits.

Being Intel Gen 7 processor won't even be fully supported by Windows 11 if optionally wanted to go that way later.
Decent chance this will get dropped from future macOS updates as quickly as Apple can get away with it also.

$600 for a 2017 Intel machine in 2022 is not a great deal, sorry. I would strongly steer away anyone considering it. Terrible decision that you'll pay for later.

Yeesh. I guess this is the wrong audience for this, but you could do a TON worse for a general use computer. My mom is rocking a 2012 MacBook Air, for crying out loud, and frankly it's just fine for what she does. Even an underwhelming machine like this iMac is still a pretty useful piece of hardware.

The price itself is a steal. But I would rather wait for the new iMac Apple will be introducing this year :)

It's not te latest and greatest iMac... but yeah, it's a steal. I would have bought this for my retired parents if I knew about it before it sold out. It's still a capable computer, with an Intel dual-core CPU.... perfect for either old retired grandparents (like my parents) or even a teenager just starting college.

Oh well, it makes sense it sold out right away.

new and warranty and intel . it's a good deal for basic usage . You can suggest people the new m1 , but sometimes it overkill. If just they upgrade to 16 GB .. much better because its hard to upgrade it.

not soldered ram ! . if not i don't upgrade to 16 GB and SSD . Yes this imac doesn't support windows 11. For my work , i more concern on hassle free homebrew update compare m1.

Kaby Lake is already obsolete even without Apple’s label

I wouldn’t consider any Intel Mac before 9th Generation Coffee Lake Refresh…..

1. 9th generation includes hardware mitigations against meltdown and other vulnerabilities. Apple’s patches merely patch the system.
2. Windows 11 doesn’t support Kaby Lake at all.
3. No chance of a processor upgrade (unless Apple used a rare BGA 1356 socket; but that only gives a user room to upgrade to a 8th gen “Kaby Lake Refresh” BGA 1356 4 core 8 thread i7 that it may not have the microcode support for. If Soldered, this can be done if one knows how to remove and reflow the replacememt processor - good luck.)

On second look, it looks like Apple "fixed" that RAM soldering for the 2017 variant at the low end. The earlier ones ones had it.

If just needed a placeholder for macOS Intel homebrew builds a used 2018 Mini would likely be better. Don't have to "unglue it" to do an update. Presuming have an old screen handy ( a hefty chunk of this iMac buy is for a 1080p screen).

we before using mac mini 2014(solder ram) . Keyboard mapping issue and and it's a bit slow. We moved to imac in 2017 and 2021 macbook air m1.

This imac 2017 can extends monitor to one lg and and another extends to macbook air m1. While m1 extend to external monitor and cannot wireless to imac 2017.
