The iPod touch is a very popular device in retail business. It is small enough be carried around easily by retail employees and inventory workers. Combined with various scanner and credit card processing devices, it is a great choice. That is why Apple did not change the case during the last refresh. Companies wanted a plug-in replacable device.
I have seen them used at Apple Stores attached to mobile credit card pos devices and thought that may have at least partially driven their decision to do another refresh in 2019.

This is where the link went for me. I know there's currency exchange & tax, but BLOODY HELL!

Holy hell, hahaha, wow. It would be cheaper for you to buy me a plane ticket and have me deliver one :D ... or just have someone ship it, I was curious, Florida (my zip) to Sidney (postal code 2000), just for an estimate, $268 via UPS World Express service ... o_O

FWIW, it looks like a bounce due to the item not being available via the same channel, so Amazon redirected to an available source.

was JUST thinking about getting a Touch. Facetiming my iPad to watch the toddlers in the driveway has been so great.

Umm... you might should be out there with them... not watching them from your upstairs office on the back side of the house. Them rascals crawl out of the iPad camera field of view quickly!

iPhone 7 can be had for $200, and serves all the same purposes. I am not sure why anyone would buy an iPod in 2020.

Not this iPod. But a really small and light device, with excellent battery Life and a good DAC, why not? Still using and loving my Nano 😊

I hope. The reason I didn't buy the 2019 version was it was the same specs as the previous model. I think almost nothing changed (and the tiny storage offerings).

I really miss the Classic (mine still works!!). So so simple.

Mmm, for most people I’d say go for an iPhone SE or an iPad mini or maybe a Pixel 3a if you can...though all do cost more than this, so it has a place. Don’t like that the cpu is 3 (almost 4) generations out of date, but it’s the same one used in the base iPad and the current Apple TV (upgraded version) unfortunately.

Ha, yes, I'm neglecting my children. That was the point of my message. Thanks for adding to the conversation.

There were quite a few changes underneath the hood. Faster processor (A8 became A10), double the RAM (1GB to 2GB), faster graphics, double storage options (16-128GB became 32-256GB). I'm almost tempted to buy one knowing it's likely the last standalone iPod ever to be made.

$180 for a $20 device. Got to love it. What will make this device impressive is adding $700 wheels to it.

What is amazing is that they're still selling the 6th gen on the US refurb store, for $150. A device which does not support iOS 13.

Does anyone still buy these things?

Speaking for myself, I bought one of ‘these things’. [Purchased mine this time last year.] Strictly for the gym, I wanted the smaller/compact Form factor with my wired EarPods. (I didn’t prefer to use my AirPods in the gym.) Literally all I ever used it for was Apple Music and Prime Music, that’s it. It was perfect. Awesome little device that matured nicely over the years. It’s a niche market for the iPod, but there is a market.

i used my SE as an ipod. Once cellular services off with just wifi, it lasted a very long time. Until i forgot and left it out in the rain.
Whoops - yeah I have an old SE that isn't on a cellular plan at the moment which I sometimes use as an iPod with a bluetooth speaker when I'm away from home (so never these days ). Battery lasts a very long time when it's only playing music. Sorry the rain got yours, sounds like you need something with and IPX8 rating!

Form factor.

I ended up getting an SE when my Touch 6 died (the seven had not been released yet) but I would consider getting a Touch again once my SE dies.

I’ve got two functioning as HomeKit remotes. Used one plugged through a PA system one time to play music for an event— didn’t really worry about it getting stolen...

was JUST thinking about getting a Touch. Facetiming my iPad to watch the toddlers in the driveway has been so great. But currently I'm using my iPhone, ha. Who else uses this method of a nanny-cam? Any pro-tips for me?

We use an old iPhone SE as a baby monitor. We don't need video, just sound in case the baby is crying -- so we initiate a FaceTime Audio call from the iPhone. You just have to remember to mute the mic on the other end so you don't wake the kid up.

I used one as a "remote" for Home Sharing music and streaming Spotify. It was an old iPod Touch, though, and it got incredibly slow and I used that as an excuse to get an iPad Mini 4 for the same purpose.

So much distaste for this product. I purchased a seventh generation iPod last October to use as a dedicated music player and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it.

$180 iPod touch plus $80 sim gsm adapter (like magicsim) and you got a very slim, inexpensive, very cool Apple smartphone.

"The iPhone without the phone"

I'll buy the next gen Touch, if Apple respects their quote. A 5.4" Touch.

---

The iPod was originally focused on music.

Why not a new line of iPods based on the camera...

Let's see what photography pros & enthusiasts fantasize on the possibilities.

Pic reminds me of when the iPhones were beautiful.
Latest SE misses the target. Needs to be smaller, with a headphone jack, and a real button (the fake one feels great on MacBooks but horrendous on phones, like you're collapsing the back of it, instead of pressing a button; and face ID is even worse).
