And we are all saying its overkill for 90% of users. If you need more, then not the mac/spec for you. No idea how this simple fact escapes all the mental giants here. This topic has been beaten to death 1000X over

I cant believe a Honda civic wont hold 7 peeps and tow a 10K LB trailer, it shoud be the minimum offered?
Then why is my 512gb ssd constantly filling up on work imac. Our files are all on the server so this is the OS, Adobe suite, and some random stuff. photoshop is constantly complaining the scratch disk is full.. My personal computer at home i have 4tb which is just right for me as a photographer

Where it should have been at day 1. Making its $749 made zero sense. If it were $499 I would have bought one on launch. But I’m not paying that much for something I can’t even upgrade. Ever
Apple is probably SOC going forward because the speed, performance per watt, and low heat is unbeatable by literally any other computer manufacturer right now, and has been for 3 years. So I'm not sure what your alternative is unless you want to get a Windows furnace that sounds like a taxiing B52 if you push it even a tiny bit.

because you have the wrong mac for *your* use? With the same logic, then why are my kids MBAs and wifes mini using less than 100 GB? cause its the right mac for *their* use.

Just wondering, can the Mac Mini be used as a HTPC? I’m trying to convert, and want to know if it can do like Dolby Atmos and HD audio pass through?

Is cheaper to use a PC as HTPC, specially if you want to store your movies/series in a hard drive or SSD, and also I would be worried about 10/12 bit color, my AMD 6400 doesn't has it, and I also would be worried about VRR.

256GB is nothing. I can't believe that's even offered. Is this 2001? lol.
Ah, no. You must be young. The top of the line 2002 quicksilver had a 80 GB PATA hard drive and a maximum of 1.5 GB of RAM. It had two 1.0 GHz processors and a 64 MB AGP video card.

I have one. It still works.

The 2009 Mini (also still works) came with a 320 MB SATA drive. Somewhere in between there is where 256 GB platters would have been.

I have a 2014 mini as a HTPC. It seems to work fine. It is connected to the receiver via HDMI and sound seems to work fine on a 5.1 setup.

I don't know if I'm "cool", but I currently have a browser with a few tabs, a mail client, Xcode (no project opened) and VS Code running and I'm already over 8GB. Maybe it's good enough to browse Facebook, but not much else.

You do realize that 0.01% of all Mac users use Xcode. Xcode is a known resource hog and this shouldn't be surprising. Virtual machines are also resource hogs.

The low end M1 MacBook Air runs Libreoffice, Safari, and email just fine. It also had no trouble running CrossOver while I was transitioning away from the last windows box.

The price for the mini with 16GB RAM and 512GB storage is priced at $1,099.99 at Amazon. That's $700 less than the price the 2018 Mac mini (December 2018) with the same RAM & storage bought at Apple. I am still using, with no problems, my 23-inch Apple Cinema HD Display that was new in 2008. About storage: Time Machine on 2 TB HDD, photos on 5 TB portable HD, several 500 GB and 1 TB SSDs.

If the mini is the end all be all for your use -- the M1 mini refurb w/16 GB/1 TB is $979 at apple. $809 with 16/512. the same as new. full warranty, apple care eligible.

I don't know if that's true, but other people may run video/photo editors and whatnot that also like to eat RAM. 8GB is not really suitable for anything but light use these days. But if you only ever run light use stuff, the M-series CPU/GPU etc. is just a complete waste in a desktop computer.

I can live with 512 or even 256 GB storage (since you can easily connect external storage if necessary), but there is no replacement for displacement sufficient RAM.

I have a M1 Mac Mini base model with a 1TB external SSD. I watch lots of videos, use MS Office, and edit photos. Would upgrading to the M2 Mini with 16gbs of ram show me anything in performance worth having?

it's a maxed out iMac 2019 except for the storage because all our work is done on a server... so theoretically ya'd think 512 would be fine...but it's not. I only trust small storage on iPads cus my iPads really have nothing locally . Macs somehow build a ton of stuff up even when ya think you aren't using it

Is your current setup lagging in any way? If not, then you have your answer...

Could be a nice home server to replace my intel Mac mini - only problem is that my uses cases for a home server a getting lesser and lesser with the years

Im not sure I understand... go to apple store, choose 16 GB ram, add to cart, buy. There is also adorama, B&H, or expercom.

M2 with 16/512 is $949 at adorama and exper.
Did you miss the part about off the shelf?
Go to Best Buy or the Apple Store , add a Mini with 16mg RAM to your actual shopping cart, buy it and take it home

Fabulous price, just picked one of these up from Microcenter to replace the atrocity that is my old 2017 Macbook Pro. Although the Macbook was configured as a beast (i7, 16gm RAm, 1TB HD), the M2 mini runs CIRCLES around it all day long.

It's 2023. The online purchase distribution warehouse shelf *IS* "the shelf" for the majority of consumer purchases.
Agreed. My uncle, a lifelong mac user, lives in Topaz, CA. Google it, and let me know the closest Apple store or Best Buy. ugh.
