I would grab this, but just not in any need for a new computer right now. Maybe in a few years I will get an M4 or M5 Mac Mini as a stop gap to my next MacBook Pro.

They might now be sold out. I just went to Amazon, added it to my cart, went to check out, and a "there was a problem" message popped up. Now the sale offer appears to be gone.

I would definitely buy one at that price. Granted i don't do any video or audio production any more. I went ahead and got one of the baseline M2 macbook airs and i thought I wouldn't be happy with it but for what I use it for it works fine

same here. I had it in the cart and it errored out on the payment screen

It's a shame there's no option via third party resellers to up the RAM on the M2 models to 16 GB for an uncharge off of these discounts. For casual home users 8GB is fine but users doing anything beyond basic email and web browsing would benefit from 16.
Agreed. When Mac shopping I've found the best solution for me is to find the base model that meets my needs, then get the best deal on it that I can find. Because base models are where the deepest discounts happen.
For me that was the 14" MacBook Pro.

Yep. Just get one of those and have it always connected to one of the thunderbolt ports since your computer isn’t going to move much. If you want it to look pretty, you can get an enclosure that matches your computer

Can TimeMachine backup external drivers? I've put Photos library on external drive on our family Mini (16/256) and almost lost it when the drive failed and apparently TM didn't back up.

True, but if you are in the US, you can order from Apple Store Education to get the similar discount, and you can customize Mac mini with your desired RAM capacity.
Sadly not everyone has access to an education email account. Apple technically offers an employee discount program for participating employers which offered both discounts on the unit base price and discounted upgrades, but they've largely gutted that program and the employee discounts are now full price.

On a tight budget, you'll be getting the same performance on baseline M1 configurations and most of them sell for even lower than these M2 sale prices.
Thanks for reminding me why I talked myself out of it the last time (and forgot). And I’m indeed on a tight budget and don’t need a new Mac (even if my credit card has extra points back from Amazon, lol), so this $500 can go into my future iPad fund.

What's the catch? Have to be a prime member for 5 years? Crazy.
Might make the jump to M series for our sql and web servers

Maybe with the new Apple AR headset people will be able to see through the reality distortion field.
I’m scared to see what the storage will be like on the headset. At $3k, it should have at least 1TB.

I don’t care how many people won’t use nearly that much space. It costs Apple less than $50 for that much storage.

Pst.
Apple doesn't do verification for Apple Store Education. Google "Apple Store Education" and order from the top results.

Hmmm...been kicking around the idea of getting a Mac mini to run as a headless music server connected to my desktop DAC/amp & controlled from my MBP (so I can decouple my MBP from the DAC/amp). I just don't want to buy a monitor and mouse for initial setup, hahaha.

What an unbelievable price!

You can also get an additional 5% off if you use the Amazon credit card to pay for it
You’re right, it is unbelievable, I mean let’s be honest who’s going to pay that much money for 256 GB of storage? You’d have to be mad wouldn’t you?

My 2008 MacBook Pro came with 256GB of HD space. I upgraded it to first 512GB Hitachi 7200 RPM and later to a 1TB SSD for hardly anything ($100). Still works. Boots in 25 seconds even with just SATA 1 interface.

I upgraded my 2012 MacMini to 2TB SSD for under $200 years ago and put an 4TB media drive in it's 2nd bay and upgraded to 16GB of RAM for like $300 total. It still does everything I need. "Green Apple" won't provide security updates anymore, though and I stopped before they ditched 32-bit app support (too many high-end apps that have since switched to subscription only like Photoshop and Microsoft Office).

I'd buy a new MacMini if they'd offer 512GB + 16GB RAM for a not-so-ridiculous price above the base line. They want way too much for 8GB RAM (you can at least go external for a hard drive). It's obscene that "green" Apple won't let you use industry standards for hard drives and RAM upgrades anymore. The old Mini wasn't the easiest hard drive upgrade ever (similar to an internal laptop), but it was certainly doable.

First thing you have to buy after getting one is a thunderbolt 4 external expandable drive. Ram, no such luck, maybe a binned M2 2tb and a micro solder gun.

Does the M2 Mac mini still have the occasional problem getting a signal out through HDMI after the display or the Mac mini goes to sleep?

I have had the issue for years with three different minis and it's not getting fixed. The only solution is to turn the Mac mini off and on again. I love the Mac mini, but if this problem is not getting fixed, I'm not going to bother buying another one.
