Thanks guys, yeah, the 2010 MBP has a 1TB drive in it right now, this library isn't that extensive, its about 500gb's. A 1tb M1 mini would work too.

I already have HA running in docker on the 2010 MBP, I just have it set to not go to sleep when the lid is closed. Thats also how we access that library from ATV's, using the MBP's library. I'm ok with continuing to run HA this way. I'm slowly trying to move us off of HA but there are still a few integrations that I need HA to bring into HomeKit for now. Hopefully one day I can do away with it. I may even look at switching to Hoobs at some point.

We are talking about a person that is coming from a 2010 MBP, discussing the purchase of a $500 mini. No idea how big the drive is in that 2010 MBP, although it was easily upgradeable.

cool you found a box for $100, but most normal peeps will only find it for $200... + drive$ = $400 = almost the cost of a mini.

a simple 2 TB SSD (kind I mentioned above) are about $120.

I think most "normal" (?) people can find it for $145 presently: https://www.amazon.com/Synology-DiskStation-DS220j-Diskless-2-bay/dp/B0855LMP81?th=1

The drive is a constant; your $400 comment is not accurate or fair. The only unique part is the extra $145 for the NAS. Only the requestor can determine if there's value in having something constantly running, always available, and if there's value in having a NAS for any other Macs' Time Machine use, and of having other tasks or items on the NAS.

I'm HomeBridge + HomeKit. What advantages do you see in those other two products, or things that you like?

And I run HomeBridge in a Linux Docker setup on a VMware ESXi 7 cluster attached to an NFS Synology SSD. :)

Dumb question: Why are used 2018 Intel Mac Mini going for over $900 and brand new 2023 M2 Mac Mini selling as low as $499? Are they really that bad?o_O

I only buy from the official Apple Store at least I can still trust Apple

Last big purchase I made from Amazon was a 65 inch tv which they somehow lost …

If they can lose something that big and that expensive I have zero faith in them now

Better yet, Apple should just increase the base RAM capacity to 16GB (at least on configurations other than the lowest-end model). Given the unified memory architecture (GPU "steals" about 2GB RAM), 16GB is much safer option.

Why?

Just buy one with more memory if you want more memory.

To do that, you need to custom configure. Many retailers do not stock non-standard custom configurations. Also, Apple will eat the cost (extra 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD do not cost a whole lot) and bring the price down to the entry level.

Of course, Apple won't do this because 16GB and 512GB SSD offer a hefty margin.

Yep, Apple's in business to make money. They compete in a very mature market, and so it's not as if everyone doesn't have a hundred alternatives here.

You can even still make a Hackintosh for another few years yet.... :)

...........

I just order off apple.com and wait. Never seems to take very long.
