Not compared to what else is available. I would happily pay $250 vs the $350 I initially paid, but would also buy the Magic Keyboard all over again even at $350. It’s one of the best accessories Apple has ever made and really adds a new dimension to the iPad, especially the 12.9.
I still cringe at the price but I do agree with you.

In my part of northern Europe this thing costs around 415$, no sales ever and no direct Apple stores, not even online, so no trade ins etc :D

The first thing I said myself is it’s still too expensive. Even the Smart Keyboard at 169 was too expensive.

With great enthusiasm, I order a magic keyboard on day one. I found it well designed and executed but made your iPad very heavy and bulky to carry around. In the end, I sent it back.

I have quit trying to make my iPad Pro a creation device and carry my M1 MacBook Air when I think I will need to do office tasks. The Air is much easier to use for these tasks and less bulk than the iPad Pro + the keyboard, also silent, and having a full computer OS makes being creative much easier.

I could never classify this keyboard as a "case". In fact, if you google around and check Amazon there are a lot attempts to add a case or bumper to this keyboard based on user frustration with the lack of protection.

I use mine as a case, as well as a Magic Keyboard, Magic Trackpad, and Magic Stand, and I've never had a problem with the lack of protection.

Yes weight is a slight annoyance. It probably needs a bit of weight though to work well as a stand.

These discounts are great but making me worried about future compatibility. Feels like apple clearing stock.

Yeah, that's my fear too. My father needs a new Macbook and iPad. I suggested he consider an iPad Pro. Since going to an Apple store isn't really in the cards at the moment, he went over to Costco with the idea of checking one out.
He basically fell in love with the 12.9" Pro with the Magic Keyboard.
So he bought one of the keyboards on sale this week and will either return it if it's not compatible with the new ones this month or possibly will see if he can get a significant discount on a 2020 model once the new ones are out.

Personally I'm betting they come out with a new keyboard to go along with the 2021 pro's, but they will also maintain backwards compatibility. But I've certainly been wrong before...

I would think they would make it backward compatible.

If it improves and addresses the issues around foldability and a row of media keys, current iPad owners might be interested. Why would Apple shut out a large installed user base?
And charge the current $349 and $299 price for them.

They could then mark down the current Magic Keyboards to $199 and $249 for the 11 and 12.9 models (yeah, still too much but this is Apple).

I don't think this thing is overpriced (for Apple) when you compare it with the sum of what you get with Apple's standalone keyboard and trackpad.

This device is killer for what it does and is a great deal at this price.

I'd like to see similar third-party offerings that improve on Apple's design, but haven't seen any yet.

FWIW, I would not use this for travel; I'd keep it plugged in on my desk for when I want to be more productive or focused on text-editing tasks specifically.

I'm thinking the same thing. I tried to get one locally yesterday, and all of the sudden no one has one in stock. Like 2 weeks ago, the local worst try had 5. AT&T had them too. Now? 'Magic Keyboard? What's that?' Would have bought from Costco, but they don't take Amex.

Looks like the new ipad pro wont be compatible with the older generations. Otherwise, why would Apple discount them now.

It’s an iPad! Seriously, have you ever seen anyone on Star Trek attach a keyboard to a tricorder?

One of the things that I always try to keep in mind when the conversation returns to “Apple product X is too expensive” is the fact that the resale value of these items is also very high. If I buy this keyboard for $250 I can probably sell it in 2 years time for $150. Other manufacturers‘ products might start out cheaper but they are almost worthless 2 years later.

Case in point - a Samsung Galaxy loses 80% of its value after 2 years

This is where I’m at, too. Probably best just to wait it out or something.
Might be worth it, always hard to say. I do really love mine. Yes, the MacBook is cheaper but then you have a MacBook. I prefer the iPad Pro for my mobile device and the Magic Keyboard is an elegant (if eye-waveringly pricy) accessory that enhances the usefulness of the iPad tremendously.
