MacRumors: DO NOT Buy an iPad in 2023!

Also MacRumors: Woot has a great sale right now on 2 year old iPad Pros!

🤣🤣🤣

Still considering getting one, tho.
I don’t think iPads were in that last Don’t Buy article. iPads are neutral/caution. It’s probably going to be just a spec bump this year.

These deals are epic, just get one if you’re on the fence!

I understand that the OLED models are gonna be out next year, but that's still 7-8 months away, not to mention the prices will be almost double of what we have to pay for the M1 models now. I don't think the 1tb version of the 12.9 pro will be less than 1700usd, I paid 1k only for it now.

Don’t know about articles, but this video makes their position on currently available iPads pretty clear. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I have the 2018 12.9" iPad Pro and it's been amazing. I wish the screen was big enough to fit an entire A4 size paper over it. That way, my notes in GoodNotes would be a lot more legible.

And I can't imagine how fast even the M1 would be in an iPad.
It's pointlessly fast.... :D

Feel free to come back and mock me if you want, but I think Apple will be committing market suicide by coming out with an iPad Pro that’s almost twice the price of the current models. They’re going to work with suppliers to bring cost down or wait until they can bring it out at a few hundred dollars more, tops. That means the wait will be longer or they’ll have negotiated a better price if it comes out in that timeframe. I just don’t see even Apple almost doubling the price in this economic climate. Just my two cents, though. 👍🏼

Oh no, not doubling, the current 12.9 1tb is 1400 or 1500 I think, so a 200usd bump seems foreseeable. I was just saying I got mine on sale for 1k (the M1 version), so even if the upgrade model comes out after half a year, I still would drool over it because of the price difference

In my opinion, iPad‘s need a data plan to complete the experience. Looks like those are not available.

They were yesterday and the day before. Must have sold out already. If you’re looking for that, keep an eye on Woot or MacRumors because this is the second time in the past month or so where these have popped up on sale.

Honestly, I was looking at replacing my 2018 iPad Pro 11” with one of these, but don’t think it makes financial sense even at these prices. Let me explain…

I’m in the market for something smaller to take with me on trips where occasional typing and researching is also needed. The 11” is too small for this purpose, even with the Magic Keyboard, as I have bigger hands and it aggravates my burgeoning carpal tunnel. So I thought about the 12.9” model.

The 12.9” wifi model with 512GB storage is $949.99 from Woot. Lowest price for a new Magic Keyboard right now that I could find is $290, so $1239.99 plus tax for both. The M1 MacBook Air with the same storage is $1199 new, less from Apple Refurbished. With the Magic Keyboard attached, the iPad Pro weighs the same as the M1 MBA. There’s no weight advantage, and arguably it’s a less capable machine with iPadOS depending on your use case. (And for mine I’d rather have a full-fledged MacOS over iPadOS.)

The M2 MBA 13” is lighter than both the M1 MBA and the iPad Pro 12.9” (though not by much), it’s also newer, but it’s more expensive. And it comes in two additional colors. I think I’ll check the refurb store and Amazon for sales on the M2 MBA 13” instead. Bide my time.

TLDR; maybe MacRumors was right all along. 🤣

That’s Dan’s opinion piece (the comments section was hilarious). I was referring to the MacRumors Buyers Guide, in which the only one listed as “don’t buy” is the Air.

You’re playing the should-I-buy mental gymnastics that are pervasive on this site. I replaced my 2018 IPP with this 2021 as the 5 year old battery on my iPad was tanking quickly. I’ve got the M2 Air and I love it, but reading/consuming with the iPad is a pleasure. That said, if I could only choose one, I’d get the MacBook!

I agree, the iPad pros are not there to fully replace laptops, but to complement or partially replace some of its functions. If you want best of all worlds, buy both, if you can love with just one, buy one. Simple as that.
