Is a smart monitor like a smart TV? I.e. does it spy on what's on the screen and send it to advertisers?

It can (and presumably does) share information about what you watch through the “smart” interface. I do not think it would share anything on the screen when you are using it as a computer display.

I have this & altho am under-utilizing*** its capabilities, overall I'm happy with it. Shoot it's a 32 inch monitor what's not to like? Well, the setup was not super intuitive 🍸😿 and sometimes Mac does not remember the orientation esp with a third monitor (I also had an old Dell panel, and by old I mean more than 12 years old, so that did not survive the battle of the survival of the fittest)

The new Sonoma moving wallpapers: beautiful and surprising detail. 🍸🐈

*comes with camera you have to attach to the top and plug into it. Leaving the camera off is a feature LOL!
*must sign into Samsung account to get some capabilities. I'm so sure! Not.
*for some reason, don't stream tv channels sitting at my desk, so ... don't use the remote control either

I have it in my study, which also has a seated area. It’s hooked up to a Macbook Pro M1 Max and Apple TV. I find it very good, just what I needed (basically Microsoft Office during the day and chill in the evening), and looks nice also. The Apple TV streams to a HomePod, as the sound from the monitor is not the best (a bit tinny, but plenty loud/clear). The picture quality is good in my opinion

hate hate these devices, I have to support some for work.
ludicrous interface, very fussy and needs a lot of interaction just to use as a display.
over priced. no standard jacks, remote is very clumsy, but always needed.
I can't speak to how fun they are to watch tv on -- but we all have a dozen ways of doing that already that doesn't track you as much.

Great idea! With live updates too, so if you're in a country with unstable currency — you would be able to see the price fluctuate.
Sounds expensive. Those API calls end up costing something, especially in this scenario of rapidly fluctuating currency values. It also impacts page loading that much more, since it’s another call to a remote server. Easier for the user to assume it’s USD and convert to local currency. Plus, it seems like a bit of a maintenance nightmare. Instead of just plugging text into a CMS that handles presentation for you, you’ve got to handle scripting (and live updates) in the data layer instead of the presentation layer (or in the presentation layer but digging into the encapsulated data object).

4K resolution on a 32” panel makes zero sense for a monitor.
I suppose I’ll dispute that. I don’t have a strong connection to 4k, but vs a 1080p computer monitor at less than 3 feet (since this is a computer monitor), 4k likely is visibly sharper. Now 4k on a 32 inch TV screen (with the increased distances people sit from the TV), and yeah, that doesn’t make much sense. But when it’s right in front of your face (as it would be on most desks), it probably does make a difference.

Some of these monitors look pretty nice and the discounts are great, but it seems like most (all?) of them have only 1,440 vertical pixels, which is kind of gross for 27" to 32" computer monitors in 2023.

My iMac "27 5K Retina, (2017) is now no longer getting the new MacOS releases.
So it's on notice and Xcode, my primary application, is grinding hard.

The obvious desktop replacement for me right now would be the Mac Mini M2.
I don't do video editing so I don't need anything more powerful.
Looking around for a screen comparable to my iMac and I can't find anything to match. At least not for stupid money.
That would be 27" at 5120x2880.
I wish someone would come up with a mod to rip out the guts of these iMacs and replace with a new board that allowed the screen to be recycled because it's worth more as a screen now than it is as a 2nd hand desktop computer.
iFixit? You listening! There must be a market for a mod like this.

It would be cool if websites used the geolocation data to display the local price of items displayed.

As in, most prices I see are in USD, but I’m in Canada, so it would be awesome if that conversion was made automatically.

Just a thought.
That would impact some users outside of the US who buy during US sales, ship to a freight forwarder in a US state without US sales tax & deliver it to their home country.

I was half kidding) You're right.
