The aluminum models are $499 on Amazon, and $399 from Apple. Amazon has a $100 incentive to get an “Amazon Store Card”, but then it’s just the same price as Apple.

Also regarding the screen, it seems that the Apple Watch 5 uses the same sapphire crystal for all of their models. If anyone can provide a link to verify or disprove this I’d appreciate it!

I honestly cannot even tell the difference between the stainless steel and the aluminum model. You're literally paying hundreds of extra dollars for a slightly different casing material. It seems nuts to me.

My experience - the screen and case just don't scratch (42mm SS S3). I have used it during major housework, car work, etc, banged it on so many doorjams and other random items, and I don't see a single scratch. It's kind of impressive when I consider the beating it's taken. I'm sure there's a limit to the durability, but I haven't faced it in the 15months I've worn it. I also bought it used, and I'm not sure I'd pay the full price for it.

If you're going to be extra careful, maybe even put a case on it, SS may not be for you.

I bought the SS Series 0 and replaced it with the aluminum Series 3 in Space Grey. After two years the aluminum S3 still looks new to me. No visible dents or scratches. I wear it daily. If I were planning to keep the Watch for decades, I would spring for more durable materials. But I know that Apple will continue to improve the feature, and I’ll want to upgrade.

I’ve ordered the S5 on aluminum Space Grey.

By the way, the trade-in value for my 4-year-old SS S0 is “we’ll recycle it for you at no charge.”

I wasn't going to buy one until I saw this deal. I went into Best Buy and they matched the offer. As an added bonus I get Best Buy reward points for the purchase!

The look is different. The weight is different. And the screen is different.

I’m torn between buying the base sport model and upgrading more frequently or getting the stainless or titanium and upgrading less frequently.

Yep, I have a Series 1. Wasn't really planning on upgrading, I was going to wait until the latest version of watchOS no longer supported the Series 1 (probably next year,) but I'm a sucker for Titanium (both of my "dumb watches" are Titanium, as is my wedding ring.) I might just go for Titanium now, and then wait for series 10 or something before upgrading again.

Amazon has the Series 5 Aluminum (GPS, 40mm) for 384.99 -- it's only $14, but it helps. I don't get to choose the band I want, which is disappointing, but I have extras. Plus I'll get 5% back using my Amazon Visa. It's supposed to arrive by next Tuesday.

I currently have a Series 1 and have had it since release -- it's flawless even though I wear it from the time I get up to the time I go to bed, and in every condition imaginable. So aluminum is all I need.

I could save a bit extra and get the Series 4 @ $349, but when you're talking these prices, why not just spend the extra $36 to get the latest version.

[doublepost=1568664737][/doublepost]If you want the gold trim as I do there's a HUGE difference. The aluminum one is pinkish, and the stainless is more like gold and the first generation watch. The black stainless is more dressy and beautiful next to the aluminum. JMO

As someone who has owned both a stainless steel and aluminum version, there is a HUGE difference. The case of the stainless steel one is less prone to dents and physical damage, and it’s very difficult to scratch the sapphire-coated screen. I switched from the stainless steel to aluminum with the series 3 and regretted it within a couple weeks.

Thank you for this and all the other feedback from others!

I think I’ll take the splurge and go for the stainless version. I tend to be pretty rough on rings and watches as I’m frequently traveling so bumps, smacks, scrapes, etc. are almost inevitable.

I don’t think the titanium is worth the premium for the lower weight but will need to swing by an Apple Store to see for myself; I’ve honestly never tried one of the things on.

That may be true, but series 4 is only the second major design. It's hard to base a trend off of only 2 data points.

iPhone is the same tho, 6, 6s, 7, 8, that’s 4 iterations for the same generation.

The only exception to this is iPad, especially the premium iPad Pros.
