I bought a fake Milanese loop for $4 on Aliexpress for my gen 1 Apple Watch and I'm still using it, it's held up wonderfully over all my Watch upgrades. Still looks like new (after scrubbing years of dead skin out of it) and magnet and Watch attachment bits is as strong as ever.

My personal opinion – I think this is becoming less of a sensible value proposition than ever.

I mean, from Apple's POV it makes sense as there are people willing to buy it.

But for us, as much as I want the better build quality of the SS model, I can't really justify spending that much money for something that has the same internals as the Alu model and that is going to be functionally useless in 3-4 years anyway. Kind of the same argument as the people who paid exorbitant prices to have the original gold watch that is now a brick.

If it's still going to be something that is only really smooth and useful for a maybe a handful of years at most, the only thing that is going to get me to invest that much money into the Apple Watch would be things that add value to it. For me, that is blood pressure monitoring and/or CGM. Which, at this point, seem like the nuclear fusion of the medical devices industry. Until that happens, I'm okay sticking it out with my SE.

What the hell happened to Apple this half of the year?
I'm piling on but for sure seeing plenty of issues. AirPods not able to decide what device they want to connect to. AppleTV losing Home hub status. Multiple apps in iOS that were solid for years now having bugs (even FaceTime). Orphaned menu options (you click on them and nothing happens). etc etc

Its about as bad as I've seen it in a while.

Exactly. These things are not like a traditional watch, where you buy a nice one and it's good forever. These things have a short lifespan. Unless you're loaded and can waste money, there's no reason to buy the SS or designer brand versions.

Apple has been making some really curious choices with pricing. At the usual price of the SS people would rather get the Ultra with better internals and exterior unless they specifically wanted the SS aesthetic. Their iPad release and price hike yesterday also seemed like a strange move 🤔

I tend to agree. IMO, the reason to get the stainless would be because you like the aesthetics of it and the extra money is really not a concern to you. The argument that it is more rugged/robust and will last longer over time is a poor one for the reasons you mentioned.

Getting AppleCare+ on a cheaper aluminum apple watch and taking advantage of it whenever there is any physical damage on the device seems like a cheaper route -- and you are still covered for damage, so it should be "fine" for the 4 years or so that it is planned to be used for.

No, I bought an SS watch as the Ultra makes no sense for me. Also, I dislike the bulky-ness.

To each their own in the end.

I have a Series 4 Stainless Steel Space Black with DLC and the new Stainless Steel Graphite is not the same product. In fact in considering an upgrade for my Series 4 SSSB AW, I will likely wait for the Series 9 and go with the Midnight Aluminum as much as I like the weighted feel of the Stainless Steel, I don't like how easily the regular SS scratches (my Series 0 scratched up a lot) and the Graphite is not DLC coated nor does it have the same dark color of the Space Black. The unfortunate downside of the Aluminum is you get the lower end face which is not as durable, but there is a decent price savings to be had. And I really have no use for Cellular on my watch and don't have a plan.

Aluminum is fine for me as I use a screen protector case for my watch so I really don’t see much except for the crown and button. I like the flat face the screen protector gives me over the regular watch face

What’s more impressive-the fact Apple was charging $799 with the cheapest band for Series 8 45mm SS Cellular, which is the same as the Watch Ultra with titanium and exclusive features and nicer standard bands…or the $100 off already? The 14 Pros and Watch Ultra were the only cool products to come out this year, and apparently the sales demonstrate as much.

They way they are worth practically nothing after a year, does not surprise that they are dropping. Not like the iPhone or other Apple products that hold their value much better.

I bought the Gen 1 stainless with milanese loop. A few years later and the battery swells up pushing the screen and back apart. Apple will not fix it, but can replace it for a few hundred dollars. I'm not wasting money on the fancy versions anymore. These things are disposable and older generations are worth almost nothing.
