I don't get these MagSafe car chargers, unless you never use Apple CarPlay, because you still have to plug your phone in to use CarPlay (except for about 3 models of cars that offer wireless CarPlay).
Or, if you replaced your car's stereo with a wireless CarPlay unit.

I decided to perform a stereo upgrade instead of buying a new car.
The question became:
What would affect my day to day experience more - an entire new car or just upgrading current?

Wireless CarPlay is a great experience:
I'm listening to a podcast in the house and can run a fast errand without plugging anything in & out.
The flow just continues.

However, for a longer trip - Wireless CarPlay can definitely drain the battery faster than normal use.
Anyone know how much faster, btw?

I like the size & shape of that Satechi.

Thank you for the post, MacRumors!

I have wireless carplay - Im just looking for a magsafe style mount, just to mount the phone (not even charge), but I dont want a vent mount.....
100% agree. In Texas, blocking the AC vents is not a good idea.

However, that mount is compelling for a rental car use case.
An AC mount in a rental car will typically hold my phone in a decent location for looking at Google Maps or Apple Maps.

Yes, the rental car display will also have navigation. However, in both of my 2021 vacations, I've needed to use my second phone to help my rental car navigate.

ex: My Personal phone, connected to Rental car navigation, uses ATT. My work phone - Verizon.

On both vacations, ATT would work well in some areas. Verizon not at all. And, vice versa.

That car mount. Ugh. You can buy an identical one for half the price on Amazon, and you’ll even get a design that actually matches the squared off look of the iPhone, as well as no sign of an ugly logo (Satechi’s Achilles heel).

Does anyone have a recommendation for a strong MagSafe mount only (no charger as I am using wired CarPlay)? I did purchase the spigen mount and scosche magic mount pro to see which holds stronger. Wasn’t sure if anyone had actual experience with any of them and the iPhone 12.

Yeah, I drive a 2015 vehicle and don't have CarPlay so having a MagSafe charger would be great. I'm slightly annoyed that nearly every magnetic charger on the market isn't actual MagSafe and doesn't charge at the full 15W. I suspect because accessory makers don't want to pay extra to Apple to license its use? It's been about a year now and MagSafe feels like it's missing the mark. Don't get me wrong, being able to attach things to the phone or the phone to something magnetically does have a few good use cases, but for me the best thing about MagSafe was the faster 15W charging. And other than Apple's own accessories and maybe a few others here and there, it seems most accessories don't support it. Not to mention the true MagSafe accessories are very expensive. The whole thing has been very underwhelming to me.
I’m with ya. I was hoping for some great accessories but instead we just get weird places to stick our phones with optional subpar charging 🥲

why would you need a magsafe mount if you're already plugging in to wired carplay, which charges your iPhone while using CarPlay? I mean, there are lots of inexpensive magnetic vent mounts already. I use one. I love it. It's cheap and it works 100% keeping my iPhone stuck to the mount.

Now you will have two wires (one to iPhone for CarPlay and one to the Magsafe mount). What happens when both are in use?

My Chevy Volt already has built in worlds charging - and its a 2017. a charger clamped to an AC vent like that's not going to fall off?

I still use some phone functions that CarPlay doesn’t display and I like to mount my phone in the center of my dash between the vents (I have a vehicle specific base mount). Right now I have one of those “scissor grip” holders and wanted to switch to magnetic mount in order to be able to rotate my phone.

i use my lightning cable and for this reason I am looking for a mount only (as I originally mentioned) without a MagSafe charger.

How would such a mount attach to the center of your dash?? Asking so I might help find something that works for you.

I use a vent mount magnetic holder for a few years that is small, strong hold and just works. But sounds like you don't want to use a vent mount?

Fair enough. It clips under the dash molding (it’s specific to the CX-5) and then it has a standard ball socket that I can remove the spring “fingers” I have now and replace with a ball-joint MagSafe mount (in theory). Gonna test the fit portion of this over the weekend. The magnet/phone hold test won’t be until my phone gets here on the 1st.

My apologies for not being clear/concise.
