Until you can fix the HomeSharing connection issue on the 2K ATV4, why would I shell out money on a product that would fail at - for me - it's main function: streaming media from my iTunes library?

FIX IT!

In my all Apple ecosystem my home sharing has been 99.9% reliable. I would say 100% but I could be forgetting about a single issue over the years of using it.

Maybe we can diagnose the issue. Mac or PC? Which router? Have you made any router setting changes?

Thanks for the response. I have also posted this multiple times in Apple's support forums, but without reply.

My signature line shows my hardware, sans router which is an Airport Extreme of a certain age (at least 5 years old), running on up-to-date firmware at factory settings. The ATV4 and iMac are connected to the AEBS via Ethernet, the only intervening device being a 10-port gigabit network switch. The iMac running Sierra (fully patched) and the ATV is running a fully patched tvOS 10.

Is this the issue where you can't see homeshare on ATV4?
If so i had it on a day 1 ATV4 64GB which i returned. I got another ATV4 32GB about 6 monthly later and that works fine.

If that's not it, could you expand on your problem and i'll happily try it my end or tell you if its the same for me.
I have 5 ATV3s and 1 ATV4 all connected via ethernet. I've moved my iTunes over to windows these days but the library has roughly 500 films in all sat on a NAS drive. My only gripe is the 5 device limit that I've not found a way to get around. Personally I'm surprised its so low, but hey..

+1 these days

Its probably either your switch, router or a faulty cable.

Start with a cable tester, then remove the switch and test the system.

Its not completely clear from your wording, but if your switch comes before your router then homesharing and airplay will not work after you finish and later try to restart.

The chain has to be router, then switch, then computers and apple TVs.

I'll give it a whirl, but this has been an issue from the day HomeSharing took over the connection of ATVs to iTunes so I've gone through a number of tvOS (and iTunes / MacOS) iterations without anything changing.

Honestly a new router might do you good too. I've had an apple extreme router for a number of years and even though it "worked" it just wasn't as fast as I thought it would be and kind of went down in performance overtime. Since the home sharing can use internet bandwidth as well as local network those old airport routers might have started getting old in their age.
I recently replaced mine with a netgear nighthawk and it was like night and day with all my home devices. So much stronger signal, faster (getting all of my internet speed on all the devices), and just seems to stream airplay so much better then it ever was.
I kept my airport express (6ish years old) for music, and just connected it to the network for the streaming (not as an extension) and it's been working better then I think it ever has.

Hope that helps

I have it set up correctly: AEBS to switch to Mac/ATV. I have moved three times (at least) during the time I've had the ATV4, so my set-up has changed from being directly connected to the AEBS, being on wifi and (now) being on an Ethernet. The issue has persisted in all configurations. If it's a hardware issue, it has to be the ATV4, and it's now long past it's warranty.

Interesting. How do non-Apple routers fare with things like Time Machine?

Read past the first post before replying.
Oh i did. It's just that they jumped on you rather sarcastically and I didn't think that was very productive for others who might be new to the forums. Just clarifying that, for anyone interested, these forums are more for discussing issues, while Apple is more appropriate for reporting specific issues and complaints.

It may well be the Apple TV.

You can test whether homesharing works by setting it up on your phone or ipad. Watch some video on your phone or ipad. It should work very well. If you have problems with this then its not likely to be your Apple TV and you can focus on your router or cables (before your computer).

I'm betting on your router. As someones else said homesharing is VERY network sensitive. Before I purchased Apple routers homesharing and airplay were very unreliable. Now they are rock solid, though airplay did have glitches until a few years ago, but everybody had those. Its perfect now and so should yours.

Until a few weeks ago, I used a 5th generation, last generation flat airport extreme as a router with the wireless turned off. I had two current airport extremes and another 5th generation airport extreme all connected by ethernet to make a roaming network. Home sharing works perfectly on the 5th generation; I use it all the time for my projector (connected by ethernet), and for wireless access in the same room.

I replaced the 5th gen extreme I used as a non wireless router with a current Time capsule and it works exactly the same. I can't tell any difference. I still use one 5th Generation airport extreme in my system with no problems.

If your airport is from 2011 to 2013 and is 5th gen it should work fine. If its older I would be checking out whether thats the problem. Does your router seem to have no problems? Do you think its working 100% properly?

I would consider buying one of the current Apple routers even though they may be going to discontinue them soon, because they play very nice with homesharing and airplay. Plus if you are in a position to wire everything up by ethernet there is very limited upside to a mesh system so far, though that will change I'm sure in the distant future.

Also, if you can borrow an Apple TV from someone you can clearly see whether or not yours is at fault.

Try and remove the switch for testing purposes even if you have to buy a few extra ethernet cables and set everything up in one room to test.

If you can determine its the apple Tv at fault, and you personally go to a store and they realise its never worked I wouldn't be surprised if they replaced it.

I don't use time machine for my back up (carbon copy cloner) but i think it might still work. the Netgear Nighthawk i purchased has USB 3 plugs so you can add a hard drive to it for a NAS of sorts. Might be able to just point time machine to that attached drive. But i could be wrong since i haven't used time machine for a bit and I know the wireless set up of it used to be funky.

You should really change routers every 2 or 3 years. Issues like this can come up even when the device appears to be otherwise functional.

MacEdit, you are correct. I had an TC for nearly 8 years, running Time Machine. But as I began to expand my home networks devices well past what it could handle anymore, I went with the Netgear Nighthawk 1900. Hooking up and external drive to the USB 3 port you will be able to set up your TimeMachine to that drive.

Meh. 4K TVs are still too expensive to be main stream so it's still a niche product anyway.
