Complaining here only works if others chime in and macrumors picks up on it and puts on front page. Apple pays attention if something then goes a bit viral.

I had a huge itune library and still do but I've gone over to Plex. Any purchased itunes stuff will stream from apple tv. And as far as i'm aware, I'm not sure apple will offer downloads of 4k content to sit in itunes to homeshare.

Is that a joke? Someone I work with just bought a 50" 4k TV for under $400.

That's still too much for it to be mainstream. I don't know many people willing to drop that on a TV. I'd be looking to spend no more than maybe £200 to £250 on a new TV. My current 41" 1080p (60Hz) TV cost me just over £100.

You get what you pay for. The very low price of the amazing tech is worth it, especially given the quality of TV available or the fact that a movie rental can have production costs in the hundreds of millions. And there’s always a happy medium on price; OLEDS are now becoming good value and will become even better value until the next big thing is launched.

You can’t be serious. Have fun with a TV that belongs in the garbage.

So you judge the quality of a product based on what you paid? Says a lot. You must be easily ripped off. My TV is awesome and does exactly what I need it to whilst also looking great. 4K is not cheap enough yet and I’m not wrong.

I don’t base it solely off the price paid. However, there’s a reason for the phrase, you get what you pay for. Why do you think Apple products are so expensive?

Hah! Apple products are not value for money. So in this case, you really don’t get what you pay for.

Sorry but I call a spade a spade and Apple is far from perfect. But generally they make high quality and expensive products. Anyway, that doesn’t change the fact that quality and price are generally related.

Thanks for the response. I have also posted this multiple times in Apple's support forums, but without reply.

My signature line shows my hardware, sans router which is an Airport Extreme of a certain age (at least 5 years old), running on up-to-date firmware at factory settings. The ATV4 and iMac are connected to the AEBS via Ethernet, the only intervening device being a 10-port gigabit network switch. The iMac running Sierra (fully patched) and the ATV is running a fully patched tvOS 10.

Can you not get it to work at all?

If so then try bypassing the switch temporarily. I'm sure you've done this but you have "Wake with network call" turned on right?

Until you can fix the HomeSharing connection issue on the 2K ATV4, why would I shell out money on a product that would fail at - for me - it's main function: streaming media from my iTunes library?

FIX IT!

You are incorrect.

The ATV’s main function is to stream from the cloud. Not from your home sharing. Home sharing is a hold over from when desktop iTunes was the center of all things Apple.

Steve Jobs’ vision was to move away from being tied to a Mac. He wanted Apple to be the cloud for all your content. He is the one that switched ATV to a streaming box only. And Apple is just furthering that goal.

This may well be true. If so, it will mean the end of me using iTunes for my media library, and ATVs for home streaming. I need my media in too many places where streaming from a cloud is not an option (like a transatlantic flight and foreign trips).

It works...until it doesn't. I have wake on network turned on, but both the Mac and the ATV are set to never sleep.

Have you tried using an iOS device home sharing? Does that work?

I updated to tvOS 11. Ominously, when coming out of the install, it asked me to turn on HomeSharing; so I reset iTunes and it connected. Next time around, it said it couldn't find my library, but after clicking off the "OK" button there it was! It has held the connection for a couple of days now.

Fingers crossed...

I have multiple Apple TVs and although it has not always been so, it "just works". I do not take advantage of it at the moment, but the auto-wake-on/sleep of my iTunes server always struck me as FM.

A.

So nice to know. I'm not sure how I would have made it through the day. hint: Apple unlikely will ever see your post or really care that you won't buy a new Apple TV. But I really hope you find a way to trouble shoot and fix your issue. Good luck. (just as an aside, homesharing works great on my ATV 4, sharing with both a Mac Mini and a MacBook Air)

I have it set up correctly: QUOTE]

If it was set up correctly, it would work :)

You don't have a 4K TV because they are too expensive.
You don't plan on getting one anytime soon.
Apple products are too expensive for you.
So.......why again are you on an Apple TV 4K forum?

For teh lulz.

I am joking, of course. But I have as much right as you do to be here, and I’m allowed to have a differing opinion. I’m doing nothing wrong.
