My Mac Pro was having KP's on every shutdown. Have 4 internal drives, 2 for Lion & 2 for Windows 7 (Bootcamp), plus 2 external USB backup drives - Time machine formatted HFS and Win Backup formatted NTFS.
I think KP's were caused by the Win Backup (NTFS) drive. Disconnected it and KP's stopped.
I now eject this drive before shutdown. Am also using "Jettison" (from the App Store to cover sleep mode - seems to work OK.
Could be your Firewire drive as Peace suggested. Try disconnecting externals to see if that helps you.

have you got any externals attached if have remove and try without for while.
as showing anonymous uuid number
on my mac it shows system hardware uuid number in same layout and scanner uuid same as, All my external hdds show with letters beginning with 0xf.
so looking more like it could be an ext. hd.

Sorry to keep posting kernel panic logs but I'm hoping it may be useful to others in a similar situation. I uninstalled Little Snitch yesterday and I just had another kernel panic screen (i'm attempting to do one thing at a time and wait for the next kernel panic so I can rule things out)

Here is the log:

I think at this point it may be the Ambrosia software (Snapz Pro 2.3.3). I use this a lot for work however, so is there any way to remove the "com.AmbrosiaSW.AudioSupport" without removing the entire app?

EDIT: Out of interest, in the console log there is also a series of "mds_" logs, are those relevant / useful? Here's a screen shot:

Gotta be the externals....

My guess is it's the Western Digital FireWire 800. I've recently gotten a few new drives (all WD), and have had the computer crash on me a bunch of times lately. There were a few mentions in there about FW and USB connections in odd places. I got a 2 TB FW 800 My Book Studio (WDBC3G0020HAL as written on the back), and a 3 TB USB My Book Essential (WDBACW0030HBK). Are either of those the same as yours?

I have a lot of kernel panics/crashes and i have a Western Digital drive. Mine is USB, though. I've had it for years and i've only been experiencing the crashes since upgrading to Lion, so i doubt the drive is the reason, but i might try unplugging it to see. First, i'm going to wait and see if i get any more errors now that i fixed Chrome. (Somehow i had two versions of Flash running and disabled the older one yesterday)

Interesting. Mine is a WD Firewire 800 My Book Studio Edition 1TB (WD10000H1Q-00). The USB connected drives are Seagates. Very interesting that you also have WD and are having issues. I am going to unplug it and see if I get any kernel panics for a week or so.

Interestingly, I have had the WD My Book unplugged for a day now and no kernel panics yet. They were occurring every 6-8 hours beforehand. Optimistic at this point. Will continue to report.

What part of the external hard drive would cause the panics? Would re-formatting the drive be any help?

Sadly I had another kernel panic last night, here is the log:

That's the first one in a few days, the WD Firewire My Book was unplugged when this kernel panic occurred.

What part of the log should I be looking at to understand the culprit?

EDIT: I have noticed a trend with the panics, whenever the occur my USB External HDD 1 (of 2 that I have, same make and model) always becomes read only after the panic occurs and the machine is restarted. The pencil icon with a line through it appears in the bottom left corner of the finder. Could this be related and do you think re-formatting the drive may help?

kLTZb.png

EDIT 2: Ran disk utility on the two external hard drives. For both drives a prompt came up saying that the drive could not be repaired, please backup data and reformat (paraphrasing). I am running Disk Warrior as we speak to try and solve this issue.

EDIT 3: Disk Warrior repaired External HDD1 which according to a report shown afterwards, Warrior "Repaired the Attribute Bits of the critical Volume Information!". The second external HDD had no errors but I was able to run a repair on it as well. Both now come back as all clean when scanned and checked by Disk Utility.

I'll continue to test these kernel panics one thing at a time, perhaps repairing the two external USB hard drives could solve the issue.

Honestly, I have no idea what part to look in. In 10.6, it used to list a bunch of threads, and say the crash was in thread 6 or some such. Then all you had to do was look at thread 6 and see if anything looked out of place. That's all I was trying to do here—look for anything out of place. I looked at the last loaded and unloaded strings and the first and last 2 items in the long log and stuff like that.

Anyhow, I unplugged the 2 new drives I hooked up lately and have had no problems since. One of the new drives was for Time Machine (which I finally decided to use instead of backing up manually every now and then). The second was a backup of my media drive. When I had the 2 USB media drives and the FW drive plugged in, it was crashing. I was using the Bittorrent client Transmission whenever it would crash, but I had the downloads folder on the "Do not back up" list for Time Machine, so I don't think it was that. There were two other quirky things going on...when using Transmission, Safari would sometimes not connect to the internet. Also, the reason I got the backup media drive was because the old one wasn't always mounting at startup (I had to unplug & replug it sometimes), so maybe it was a faulty USB connector causing the panic. HOWEVER, it wasn't causing the panic until I bought the other 2 disks. So, yeah, it seems at this point like mine was caused by one of the two drives. Since I unplugged my old media drive and my FW 800, I've had no problems at all.

Is there a way I can read these crash logs so I can determine what is causing the problem?

No. > 90% of all kernel panics are caused by some hardware defect; most likely RAM that isn't working, or a hard drive not working reliably. That's the casue, but where it causes your Mac to crash, that is unpredictable. The only useful thing is going through the list of drivers, and if any of them is non-standard, that can be the cause of the trouble.

If you launch Console, under the list of kernel panics there are some reports which begin with "mds_" and then list the date of the crash. These include Crashed Thread details, the most recent of mine being "Crashed Thread: 0 Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread" however a lot of them seem to be caused by Spotlight.

I took the machine to an Apple Genius when this first started and they suggested re-installing Lion and identified Spotlight as the culprit. I re-installed Lion and the problem continues.

Another interesting thing is I too use transmission and often the kernel panics would occur when this was running however it doesn't appear to be the culprit as I have used it before and after the panics without problem.

Clean install of Lion, nothing plugged in except ethernet, mouse, keyboard. Here's my newest kernel panic:

Any ideas?

It seems like my crashes/kernel panics are almost ALWAYS with a browser running. Doesn't matter which one. Safari, Rockmelt, Chrome. All three. I played Minecraft to test it and it was perfectly fine. Open a browser, i crash within minutes usually, even if i'm not currently USING the browser at the time of the crash. WTF? I know Minecraft isn't that hard on the CPU/graphics card, but it has to be harder on it than an idling browser. I don't get it.

Jeremy...
The only time before this I ever had kernel panics was when OS X was just a kitten. It was caused by the fraying of the wire on my mouse where it connects to the base of the mouse. If you have another USB mouse, give it a shot. Also, the great troubleshooting question is always, "Did you turn it off and turn it back on again?" Well, try that with your cable/DSL modem and your router too.

Thanks for the ideas. My mouse is brand new and it did it with my Logitech one and my Magic Mouse as well, though. Same for router/modem. I've literally tried everything i know of. Clean install, uninstall apps that show up in logs, unplugged all extra hardware (cameras, external drives, etc), reset PRAM, re-seated the RAM, tested the RAM, repaired permissions, etc. I'm out of ideas. Ready to trade this thing for an iPad. lol.

How to diagnose panics:

Generally they're caused by stuff running in Kernel space. This means, typically drivers, and the kernel itself.

Now, if its caused by drivers, it will probably be panic-ing in the same or similar piece of code every time (typically: the driver itself).

If it is hardware related (heat/dodgy ram/dodgy cpu/etc) it will tend to panic in different locations in the code.

If the panics are fairly different every time, run hardware diagnostics. These days RAM tends to be the flakiest component, either that or over-temp due to dead/dying/blocked fans.

If the RAM is OK, and it is a panic that mentions swap, it could be an early symptom of hard drive corruption.

If you are still getting panics on a clean install with minimal hardware attached (read: only the hardware the machine came with) that would tend to indicate a hardware fault.

Bear in mind, RAM does fail quite often. re-seating it won't help if it is dead. If it is dead, its a very good excuse to swap for larger capacity DIMMs.

Looking at your panics, unless i'm reading them wrong, they all appear to be related to memory allocation (pmap_remove) - the first one explicitly mentions HFS and swap.

Are you sure your hard drive is OK? Given that you also mention a corrupted install at the beginning of all this I suspect that it may not be....

In the event that you're still having this problem, I have recently had the same problem myself. It was caused by LittleSnitch.

at.obdev.nke.LittleSnitch 2.4.4

When I uninstalled LittleSnitch it did not remove this process.
I had to manually remove it by going into System/Library/Extensions and deleting the file LittleSnitch.kext.

That however seems to have definitely resolved the problem for me.

My mom's macbook was also KP after a software and ram update/upgrade.

It came down to the ram, it was faulty. I ran memtest and it found errors in the ram (booted it and run low level, 7 hours scan).

After exchanging the ram, everything was fine once again ...

Do the kernel panics share a common pattern? If they're always panicing in the same kernel module, then it could indicate the hardware related to that module is faulty.

If they appear in fairly random modules, then it is likely faulty memory.

Kernel Panic - hfs_swap_HFSPlusBTInternalNode

I've been experiencing the EXACT same problem the last few days and I believe I have narrowed down the issue. No solution yet ... so FRUSTRATION!!!!!

But whenever I plug in my external FW800 G-DRIVE which is also my TIME MACHINE, it panics! 3 weeks ago, at bootup time, my TIME MACHINE drive stopped mounting and kept giving me the "Initialize" error message. I did so, wiped it and reconfigured it from scratch. Backed up everything and a day after that, my system started panicking.

When I unplug the external HD, everything works perfectly fine. Zapped the PRAM, ran a Hardware test, reset the SMC controller. NOTHING worked. It kept giving me the same kernel panic error.

So you have an external drive as well?
