OK so I went onto www.apple.com/uk (Im from Northern Ireland) and looked at the main difference.

13 Inch White
2.0GHz

* 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
* 1GB memory
* 80GB hard drive1
* Combo drive

13 Inch Black
2.2 GHz

* 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
* 1GB memory
* 160GB hard drive1
* Double-layer SuperDrive
Main difference is it has a 2.2GHz and a 160 GB Hard drive... I can upgrade the hard drive to 160GB for £100.

So it would cost me £799.00 for the white mac with 160 GB hard drive, and it would cost me £949.00 with the 160 GH hard drive - so really im paying for a double layer superdrive, which wouldnt be much use to me, and a .2GHz upgrade - is it really worth it?

PS : I will be gettin educational discounts but im not at uni right now so I cant say how much it will be with education discounts so ive just put the Apple Store main prices on for now.

its 14% of all macbooks in the uk :)
so £816 for a blackbook

or for £713 get the middle white one and with the extra money get extra memory with the from here its very very cheap and its good quality stuff :)

Because the extra $200 over the baseline model will get you the faster Core 2 Duo (same as the black one), a 120GB HD (vs 80GB baseline), and a Superdrive. This is basically the same exact model as the Black, except the HD is 160GB on the Black model. Do as I did: I purchased the 2.2 GHz model and 4GB of RAM and installed it myself. In the end, I got a system with 2.2 GHz, 4GB RAM, 120GB HD, and a Superdrive and the total was still $50 less than it was for the standard Blackbook.

OK sorry lol I got all confused there! I see what you mean!

I might just end up gettin the middle MacBook, not the 2.0GHz white one, but not the black one, the one in the middle (sort of)!

This will be my first Mac - hope it doesnt let me down

A router with a 3 ports switch with a usb socket for network printer or a HDD (this is available as airport expreme, which is apple's broadband router) but time capsule has a 500GB or 1TB hard drive in it aswell which can be used for wireless time machine or just for network storage.

I can almost guarentee to you that if you get a model with the standard 1GB RAM, you'll be disappointed by the performance. Buy a 4GB upgrade no matter which model you go for because 1GB just isn't enough for Leopard and basic tasks...Apple needs to realize that and stop charging ridiculous prices for their RAM upgrades. :mad:

Were is the best place to buy cheap RAM for macbooks?

I advise against "cheap" RAM because quality is important. I'm not sure about your whereabouts, but in the USA, the best place to go is Newegg.com. I would recommend G.Skill, Crucial, or Corsair RAM...they are all very dependable companies with a long track record and consistent reviews.

I personally would go with the white one. As many others have said, the black one will show up all the fingerprints, the tiniest pieces of dust, and don't look like macs :p

The white MacBook's are nice. If you're worried about the palm rest getting patches where you rest your hands (I would be), you can buy a silicone palm rest cover off eBay.

There are 2 types of student discount. There is the Education Store for school and college students, and then there's the HE store for University students. (I think these discounts also relate to staff too). The HE store can only be accessed from your university campus though, so it may be worth you ordering from there (If you're a uni student).

The discounts are as follows:

The HE Discount is 14% so a mid range MacBook would cost £712.94

The standard Education Discount varies from product to product and the mid range MacBook costs: £779.03
Apple also do fantastic discounts on their software, and other products too. I just bought Logic Studio from the HE Store and it cost £118 instead of £319.

The Time Capsule is basically a WiFi router and Server Grade hard drive in one which you can use to back up time machine or as a wireless external hard drive.

What about an upgrade to a 2.0GB - would that be any good.

That would cost me £790.34, however if I upgrade to 4GB, it would cost me £1178.33 (which according to www.xe.com works out at $1,550.86 for the 4 GB and $2,312.14)...

What do you think

Im confused! lol

Are you looking at the upgrades on the Apple website?

If you are, STOP IT lol.

The RAM prices are absolutely ridiculous on the Apple website. They are charging £539.99 for 4GB RAM update right? www.crucial.com sell this for £65 including delivery, then you just put the RAM in yourself.

This is the cheapest way to do it and easiest (to put the ram in, you just take a user accessible plate off the bottom and pop the ram into the slots)

Ah yes I see that (http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=2709378FA5CA7304) - why do Apple charge such ridiculous prices?

I will be the first to admit that you can configure the same exact white one for cheaper than the black one. So if money is of a concern, go for the white.

But if not, I think the black one looks very sleek, and, in my opinion, less cheap than the white plastic. I also like how the illuminated white Apple symbol on the back of the black screen shows up better because of the contrast. Not to mention, almost every white one I've seen has become discolored on the palm rests, and after short periods of time as well - my friend bought one in September and now, four months later, the palm rest area has become a brownish/yellowish color. Yes, the black one can get greasy, but if you have any soft of soft cloth, it can be wiped down easily.

Good luck in choosing! It's a great machine no matter what color.

Advice: Don't go by the polls. Do by your own personal preference...you'll be happier that way.

I'll admit I'm torn myself. I was at the store trying to decide earlier, since I'm also in the market. The black one was just so greasy with everyone touching it. I think that might get on my nerves to have to wipe it down all the time.

However, I'm wondering if the black around the screen might make the visuals 'pop' better than having a white border. Any opinions on that?

As far as the discoloring on the palm rests of the white MacBook, I'm thinking I'll probably buy some sort of iSkin or similar product.
