I think you've got one sweet LBC (Little British Car).

Thanks a bunch. I'm super excited about the car. It's in Indiana and a little ways away, so I need to get up to get it. I actually already have it insured. I'm hoping to go get it on Saturday, and can't wait.

I didn't see that the Classic environment was mentioned, so good call on the advice @bunnspecial . In my case, I have a Rage 128 in my PCI slot for those instances, as my Nvidia card doesn't really work, or, I just don't have the right extensions. But, it has been years since I booted into classic on those machines. For Classic, I am either on my 840av, 8500, LC525, LC II, or my B&W G3 (now a G4).

I guess I have made the QuickAudio (what I call my G4) an OS X only machine.

Just as a little side note and to nitpick a little bit, I usually think of the Classic environment as being the OS 9 virtual machine running inside OS X. To me, a computer natively running(i.e. booted into) any "classic" version of the Mac OS is just running that OS.

I'm not a huge fan of Classic, although it does work well on DP systems and on G5s.

Funny enough, right up until the end, OS 9.2.2 included a 68K emulator(which was seamless) and functioned perfectly even in Classic mode. A few months back, I bought a Digital Audio(along with a dual 1.25 MDD, a Yikes! G4, and the 21" Trinitron CRT) from a local graphic design agency. The DA was OS X only(there were no OS 9 drivers on the drive, so it couldn't boot into OS 9) but had Illustrator 5.5 installed. I have the Illustrator 5.5 disks(bought at the same time I bought the computers) and it's a pure 68K, pre-PowerPC program. It works flawlessly and seamlessly in Classic mode on the Digital Audio.

Make sure you have a backup car! Lol.

Don't worry-it's not my daily driver!

Maybe if I can't get the G4 up and running, I should "upgrade" to a G5. Some people sneer at those older apps, but they have some amazing capabilities, sort of like Apple itself.

Don't let it sit, or it will quickly go downhill.

It's probably going to get driven to work on nice days, or at least until the winter. I have local sources for ethanol-free gas and even aviation gas, so can fuel it up in the winter and plan to at least start it regularly even if not driven. That's what the guy who's selling it has been doing over the past year. We usually even have enough nice days here in the winter that I can probably drive it regularly up into December-January, February and early March might be iffy but I'll at least start it.

Of course, what we all need is someplace like this for our LBCs, with climate control and staff mechanics to keep them tip top:

The E-Type, and the 140s wouldn't hurt either ;).

Great points and I agree 100%.

I am used to dealing with the average MacRumors user who typically has zero PPC experience, let alone pre OS X working environments. I should remember to use proper MacOS grammar in the higher educated areas away from iPhone forums, and here in the PPC / Apple Collector forums ;) .

Any experience with running Snow Leopard on a VM in Yosemite?
I have :) vmware fusion has a check for the server version of OS X if its not it wont boot but you can get round that with some know how heh (you can also boot it in virtual box without too much issue too and it doesn't check for the server version but vbox does not have guest editions)

Well, if you want an experience more like most of the other forums on here, I can certainly try to give that to you :)

There's no point in dumping money into old hardware like that. After all, it will never run El Capitan and you could buy a new Retina Macbook Pro which gets a Geekbench score of 1.21 gigawatts and for less money than you'd be spending on this old outdated piece of hardware and the Retina can do everything so much better. People just need to move on and learn to let go of their old stuff, and I'm glad that Apple is leaving everyone behind who refuses to upgrade to the latest and greatest.

How'd I do? :)

My car is Japanese, not British, but I love it to bits

It's a 1993 Toyota 4Runner with 217k miles. Runs like a top, but it has lost some compression and needs a new engine.

Thanks!

The reason I asked is because I'm gutting my Mac Pro 2011 5,1 Dual 2.4Ghz, and upgrading the CPUs, the GPU, etc, but the new GPU won't run in anything older than Lion (preferably Mavericks) and the new CPUs need Yosemite. That will orphan a bunch of programs that I use in my art work. One can't run in anything newer than Snow Leopard, and that doesn't count the ones that are still from the OS 8 era.

I've tried to figure out VirtualBox, but I'm just a dumb artist and the command line stuff is Greek to me. Seems too much like math. Do you think VMWare Fusion is up to this task of running (smoothly, invisibly, quickly) some older apps?

MG

I happen to have a brand new disc of Snow Leopard Server, if that helps.

You do realize you're asking this question about your 'Intel' based Mac Pro on a 'PPC' forum in which the maximum Operating System is OS X10.5 Leopard

I'm so sorry. I think I got my threads crossed, but I'm worried about losing apps that run on my G4 (which is a brick at the moment), and trying to make decisions about what I can let go of, and what I can't afford to lose when I upgrade the Mac Pro.

Sorry guys. My fault the thread went haywire with the MG talk.

We now return to our regularly scheduled program....

if you have a snow leopard server disk it should be plain sailing with vmware... no need for any hacks or stuff like that BTW the Mac pro 5,1 should run snow leopard (I doubt the CPUs NEED Yosemite to work) the graphics card if its a 7950 will work in SL just in basic frame buffer mode...

Thanks.

The new CPUs are Intel Xeon 5680. The new GPU is an AMD Radeon 7970 from Macvidcards.com. I'm not sure about what the CPUs require, but according to MVC, the GPU will not run less than 10.7.5 or later.

I think the best choice for a non-technologist like me is to go the path of least resistance, which you suggested - VMWare. Right before you posted last, I was reading a years long thread about virtualizing Snow Leopard Server in Parallels. It was daunting.

X5680 will work in SL and above... the 7970 requires Loin and up for full exertion... but if wont crash SL if you boot into it (you just wont have any driver support I think theres a guy on MR with a MP 1,1 booting tiger and mavericks with a 7950 LOL )

Somebody told me I'd just get a black screen if I booted SL into the 7970. I have no idea.

Entered thread to see info on one of my favorite apple models

Got pictures of one of my favorite automobiles

GREAT THREAD!!!

Got pictures of one of my favorite automobiles

So, I'm dying to know which one :)

The MG, Cosworth Mercedes, E type, or the 4Runner? :)

(BTW, I'd love to be the guy in the denim shirt with a few hundred cars in my garage. I just watched the first episode of his new show this week-it's great but then I've been a fan of Leno for as long as I've been old enough to watch late night TV)

So, I'm dying to know which one :)

The MG for sure, although I'd love to have a cosworth! I also have a thing for older Toyota sport vehicles, as my first car was a 1992 toyota pickup (this was back when toyota pickups had no name, and were just called pickups).

The only one i'm not too keen on is the E-type. I feel I can say this without being called negative as these cars are loved by so many people that clearly the problem is with my sense of taste.

Also I like Leno's tv stuff, but my favorite thing he's ever done is his youtube car series. I've watched the episode with his 57 Buick Roadmaster sooooo many times. [Edit: Going to watch it again]
