haha thanks wdlove.

I haven't heard of Journaling increasing speed any...

Don't waste your UPS on your mac for long really, if you have a poweroutage, save all of your documents and stuff you have opened and shut the machine down -- you might need that power.

I don't know what OWC Mercury Elite is...

Power supply?

--MrMacMan

The OWC Mercury Elite is an external Firewire Hard Drive. 12 GB. It was recommended by Dr. Mac Bob Levitus at MYNY 2002, when I inquired for his opinion.

How do you figure that the UPS is a waste? It is set to do it automatically, if you happen to be away from home when a power outage might occur.

Ahh, back from a boonedogle to our Las Vegas lab, (I get paid to go there... :D ) I have found a little extra horsepower. I added 15 CPUs to the fray, which should be reporting in the next day or so, (blast those Tinkers!).

Hey Shemp9999, I can still see you from here...

:applauds:

Wow 15 CPU's just like that.

Wow.

You are amazing. :D

wdlove -- I'm not sure what you are asking me about the hard drive... (OWC). Do you have it or are you looking into buying it?

The UPS is very useful when you are home.

Do you know how long your computer runs when the power is off and the UPS kicks in?

mc68k -- a very different graph indeed... hmm I wonder how they show a greater difference... one is the past week and one is the past months?

looks like statsman has finer detail upon further inspection

I am already using the OWC.

When the electricity goes off, the UPS immediately starts making an ear piercing sound. It will allow approximately 15 minutes to make backups and shutdown prior to the end of battery life.

I'm sorry that I confused you MrMacman. My actual question was to elicit your thoughts on Journaling. Not sure that I totally understand the function.

the hairy part is the back of my head :D

good to see the added boost. i have now accomplished my (rather lowend) goal of reaching the top 1000 folders...

thanks for the get well wishes guys. i'm feeling much better.:p

Journaling in a little more depth then apple gives it:
http://www.lafcpug.org/features_file_journaling.html

Its possible it will slow things that access your hard drive, but booting will be faster... ect.

shemp9999 -- Good to know your feeling better.

Also looking better is our output, nice jump there. Back to 23k range is a good thing.

:D

Keep your eye on your backdoor, SPCR didn't like the whipping we gave them and had to sell their soul to ARM Systems for revenge.

They should be blowing our doors off here in a few days, so they will be eyeing MacRumors next.

At least we smacked them one good, been playing with us for quite some time.

Your turn to taunt them...

enjoy.

Sailfish thanks for the concern, but I am more worried about SAGoons, which are outproducing up much higher...

When they get posted on the pottential threats list we will take notice, but really their highest production and our lowest production are the same.

My G4 is running flawlessly at the moment except for Mail, that I don't plan on using Journaling. Why bother with almost perfection. All du to my friends on the forum.

It is always good news to hear about our improved output. :)

On careful analysis, ;) I think some of the problem on production has been many of the small contributers have been dropping off. (Since our production per use has been spiking, and our number of active members has been dwindling.) It may take another membership drive to get us to break 30k a day....

I know that I'm one of the small contributors. My plans are to be a loyal member. The banner that is under development should be a great boost for our next membership drive.

Yes, being overrun by them yet again would be demoralising.

I'm thinking that once the banner gets up, we'll see a jump in members which may push us to 30k a day.

As for me, I'm still working on a tinker that I've had since last Thursday. At the rate its going, it should be done sometime next week. :(

yeah, we were well over 400 active users a few weeks ago.

the wondermutt has me a titch worried though, which is a good thing. :D :D :D
must raise the ante...;)

p.s. while i don't understand the helix banner on its own (what is the team number, the url, or the purpose?), it sure is pretty.:p :p

hopefully, the hoi polloi will click through to get the particulars.

Perhaps this should be in a different thread... but it relates to declining production. Mine, at least. I had three machines going with folding. One is a dual Athlon (Linux) running a single client. Recently it locked up several times, always sometime after starting the client.

If I don't start the client, it is fine. When I start it, it locks after a bit. So, it seems from my reading elsewhere that it could be a sign that I'm not cooling the CPU properly, although I ran the client for weeks straight without a problem. Can I assign the client to the other CPU to test if the other CPU is not cooling. Although I know some Unix, I am not certain how I would do that.

Could I have a bad unit that is giving the client conniptions? Do I delete something to start it fresh? I connect to this machine from home, so if it locks and I am away it is no fun.

I was doing 500 a week, and now I am treading water.

dros --

i am noticing similar results with some xeon machines. these are stock 2x2GHz boxes.

i've had to keep a 'weather eye' on their processes, as they sometimes have run away.:(

...

I remember Windows client that limit how much CPU folding can use...

Does anyone remember the command for Linux?

You could tinker around with that....

And the nights are far down there... 16k

It looks like we are back with our production. The "tinker storm" has blown over. We are producing about the same as when we where behind the knights, before we got them in our sights! So, when our top folders get all their stuf back up, we will probably get close to 28-29K.

BTW: It looks like we get a "tinker storm" about once a month...

Saw that too Mr. MacMan and am not pleased! :( When we where getting close to the Knights, we gotten a lot of new folders (about 30 per week). Just looked at our new folders and it's only 9 in the last week... Get that banner in the air (or on the frontpage :D )
