If you change your setting, it should act like it always has.

The main reason for change is the Forum List is a very hard to navigate view for non-regular users or those who aren't familiar with forums. The trending list is a more accessible. So that's the view that we want presented to non-logged-in passers by.

But, in order to accomplish that, it has to be the "default" view... which does cause an inconvenience for regulars who are used to the forum list view. But that's why there's an option to change it back to what you're used to.

Lemme know if it caused other problems after you change your default back to "Forum List".

The problem is the trending list is basically engagement bait and shows an ugly face of the most annoying and shallow and unhelpful threads.

New settings seems to be working fwiw but I don’t trust the motive. Flashback to when Elon demanded his engineers make the logged-out twitter landing page a live running list of tweets lolol

I came to the SFF section tonight with a view to starting a thread (asking a question?) about this unnecessary and unwelcome change, as I had noticed it today and found it most irksome.

Actually, to be candid, initially, I had (erroneously) assumed that I had somehow clicked on something by mistake, and had somehow, inexplicably, brought about this unwelcome, unwanted, unsought, change, and now found that I was unable to reverse it.

However, I couldn't recall what I had done to bring about this state of affairs, and - eventually - thought to post a thread in this section asking about this, only to discover, to my delight, that an explanation had already been vouchsafed by @arn for why this change had been implemented.

Personally, I'm not remotely interested in reading what is "trending", and found having to make an extra click - simply to restore it to what it used to be - namely the standard "Forum List" - an annoyance, and an unnecessary annoyance, at that.

In any case, thank you for the guidelines as how to restore it to what it used to be, so that one can simply alight upon "Forum List" without having to adjust it from the tedious "trending" each and every time one clicks on "Forums".

Prioritising anything that is "trending" strikes me as a sort of click bait - and does serve to promote shallow and noisy stuff at the expense of what some of us who have been around for a while may find a lot more interesting, and is not a change that I would welcome.

However, I am glad that an option exists to restore the status quo ante; I have now availed of it, and thank you for it.

Thanks, but I just short cut to a particular forum I'm interested in and ignore the rest.

The forum list should remain the default however. Adding extra clicks to get to the Forum home list by default is poor user experience. If "trending" (or flaming topics) is so important add it as another direct link.

I've changed it so all existing users are automatically opted into the historic view (Forum List). So no manual changes if you're a registered user before today.

You can still use the preference panel to change it to the other options.

Hi,

When you’re not logged in, and click on Forums from the homepage you get Trending. This is fine, I guess. But from there when you click on the Forums list it doesn’t show the forums list. Is this by design so users always have to log in to browse the forums?

hmm... now I wonder if it's aggressive caching. I'll keep an eye on it.

edit: actually, it shouldn't be. it lives on it's own URL.

When it was happening and I hovered over the url or clicked on it, it looked something like forums.macrumors.com/-/-.html

Sorry I’m not tech savvy and don’t have more info to share.

It appears to be fixed, though, at least for me.

I'm still having it open to trending when I'm not logged in. This was an unwelcome change. How do we get it back to the old way because my account is set to open to forum list. My account didn't go back to the "historic view" even though it's set to open to forum list

Do you tend not to stay logged in?
