Before calibration, the whole screen has a yellowish tint. Using my Huey, the calibrated display is absolutely wonderful. The yellow 1/3 thingy, if it exists, is not preceptable to me.

Today, I booted up and when it got into OSX, the display was somewhat messed up, as everything was kind of distorted in a pixelized kind of way. There was slight flickering in one area. Fortunately, when i rebooted, everything was ok. Don't know if this was a one time thing or not, but I thought it was weird. Prior to this I had played around with the Color Profiler and quit midway through without finishing because I didn't want to have any changes, so i'm not sure if that played a role in anything. Otherwise, screen looks awesome.

Guess the Galleria store had a bunch of good apples (pun intended :p ), mine turned out to be perfect too.

You can find the computer's serial number in System Profiler or by pulling up "About My Mac" and clicking the text where it says "Version 10.4.9" until it shows the number.

Viewing angles are, well, laptop-like but I just don't see that yellow tint. Totally happy with the laptop (the thermal paste should settle).

EDIT: I should add that the default profile is awful. The whole screen had a very slight yellow cast.

I went to the Apple Store and compared four MBPs (a LG glossy, a Samsung glossy, a matte LG, and a matte Samsung). What I noticed is that all four panels had a hue-shift when comparing the top to the bottom of the screen. That is, when viewing the top directly, on the LG panels neutral colors seem to be towards the blue spectrum and in the Samsung panels they seem to be towards the magenta spectrum. When viewing the bottom directly, on the LG panels neutral colors seem to be toward the green spectrum and the Samsung panels towards the yellow. In general, the default calibration from the factory shows that the Samsung panels are warm while the LG panels are cold. Manual calibration may work to get these two screens closer in color.

My observations are of course subjective. I am not an expert in color theory and it may be that what I was seeing is just caused by a difference in viewing angle. FWIW, the hue shifts are not obvious in all four units and so I am not really sure if this is what everyone here refers to as "yellow tint."

I'm starting to think that someone started to shout "The sky is falling, the sky is falling" and everyone followed suit.

I only glanced at the results but there does not appear to be a rhyme or rhythm to this "problem." Anyone car to tally the results? As long as the sample size is at least 30, we should have a descent outcome with a descent margin of error.

I concur that the Samsung panels are a bit warm with the default profile. For those who prefer a cooler, more blueish look, calibration can work wonders.

I've actually been switching back and forth for a couple of days trying to decide which I prefer. The default profile recalibrated to gamma 2.2 has a "creamy" quality that's very easy on the eyes. I also find that video looks somewhat more natural with this profile. (I'm used to NTSC on calibrated monitors, which usually means warmer whites.)

On the other hand, the cooler profile definitely gives the display more sizzle. It's hard not to be attracted to the additional contrast and slightly more vibrant colors.

Actually, to further comment...one of the keyboard keys (C button)...well it's different from the rest of the keys...the finish on it is totally different. To the touch, it has a much more grainy feel to it compared to the other keys, which is more smooth. At an angle, with the light shining on it, you can also see a difference in light reflection. So it's not absolutely perfect...Goes off to find a C button at the Apple store:rolleyes: ...haha.

I hate to ruin the cadance of responses thus far, but one important other defect has been left out that should be noted. That is the scratching, hissing, and squealing when using the headphone jack. The electrical interference is important to a lot of pro audio folks and it would be nice to know how widespread this problem is...Thanks!

Pro audio people would normally use an external FireWire interface with their laptop, not the built-in sound...

Another request for the TS; can you add the following two questions to the form:

Where was your MBP shipped from?
What is the format of your serial number?

It's possible the MBP are manufactured at multiple factories; possible one uses the Samsung screen and the other one uses the LG screen in the production line. This way you can maybe tell from the shipping details where it was build and correlate build quality by factories and/or production lines.

Also, production lines should probably be visible in the serial number. I work for a consumer electronics company as well and our serial number format also contains information about the factory and the manufacture date.

What is the format for the MBP SR serial number? For example:

W8612[A|B]12345

First a W, then 4 digits, then an A or a B and then 5 digits.

Probably A/B would code for a factory / supplier

my MBP screen flickered initially but the problem went away after i increased screen brightness to max.
no dead pixels.

I was initially concerned about screen flickering to one side of my screen, it was quite noticable on the intial grey 'transfer' screen when i was using setup assistant - seems to be fine now thou - phewww :)

Other: I returned my first one because of yellow tint. This new one doesn't have a yellow tint at the bottom. Slightly darker upper right corner. More light bleed at the bottom than the previous. All in all a beautiful display that I'm satisfied with.
