I tried to swap the machine on the 17th, but the (3) machines we booted all suffered from the yellow hue problem. They were all Samsung screens. The store did have an LG as a floor demo and I was able to show a lot of the peeps the difference and they ALL agreed that the yellow was present on the Samsung models and not on the LG model.

I am heading back this Friday to return for a FULL refund and will wait till they can figure this out. So much for my first MAC after 15+ years of being a PC user.

Other than the above problem I WILL buy another one once they figure it out. I love the machine and parting with it is going to be tough. :(

I would like to know about the audio output as well. I'll (hopefully) be using a SR MBP for music, as it looks like my CoreDuo MacBook Pro is on it's last legs.

Sorry guys, but this is (the MBP) ridiculous. I can see the question is "Screen flickering at 100%" - so does this mean that these LED displays all flicker when your brightness is below 100%? I would call that a manufacturing error and will not accept this on my MBP. I just ordered one, and if you all have flickering issues at lower than 100% brightness, I will cancel my order ASAP. That is simply unacceptable.

I never have the brightness at 100% (its just to bright! ;)), and normally have it set anywhere between middle-upto high brightness and I get no flickering

So far, trying to put the data between the two forums together,

Cant wait to see what ya get!

Thanks for that. It's not scientific but it makes interesting reading.

I tend to read about these 'issues' when new products are released and roll my eyes at everyone's complaints, thinking, what a bunch of whiners! I have to say it's different when you actually get a duff product though.

I'm still not 100% happy with my replacement MBP, though it is better than the first. I just don't know how bad the third might be, hence my hesitation...

screen flickering

Does nobody have screen flickering when turning down brightness 2-3 steps?

I think this potential issue should be added to the data list.

I experienced it, and so did friends who just bought the new Macbook Pro.

Being an Apple user feels more and more like beeing an unpaid beta tester to me - as I had technical issues which each of my last three intel macs.

I thought I'd contribute too =)

Screen Flickering at 100% brightness: No, however, there was this one time the screen flickered when it was around 2/3 brightness I think. Adjusting the brightness (+1 then -1) immediately fixed it. Causing me to think it's a software rather than hardware problem. I cannot reproduce it though.
Dead Pixels?: No

I'm quite happy with my MBP, but the trackpad button seems to be quite lose. I might get it fixed instead of risking to get a new machine with other defeats.

LG Matte - 23 users replied | all 23 LED screens were reported good
LG Glossy - 6 users replied | 3 LED screens were reported good | 3 were bad

Samsung Matte - 18 users replied | 7 LED screens were reported good | 11 were bad
Samsung Glossy - 16 users replied | 8 LED screens were reported good | 8 were bad

Hey Xquizit, I believe PDE had a matte LG that had the yellow defect ... see page 1 of this thread.

I don't have the problems stated above, but i have gradient problems, for example in Adium, the chat background isn't as smooth as on my other screens. Could be a calibration problem, but i don't really know how to calibrate without screwing up all colors (they are already 'diffrent', i'm not a color expert).

Does anybody have calibrated files for the Samsung display?

Whoops, dunno how I missed that.. musta misread it.. hope I didnt do it with any others.. here's the updated results

Ok so I counted up the data myself through the two threads I had, and here's the data I have.. I stopped counting the flickering and dead pixels because their wasnt enough people with those problems.. It seems for the most part that the biggest defect affecting these laptops is the yellowish screen. The data is a bit interesting, but a reminder, there's nothing scientific about this.. I'm just gonna go down the line on who had discoloration problems:

LG Matte - 24 users replied | 23 LED screens were reported good | 1 was bad
LG Glossy - 6 users replied | 3 LED screens were reported good | 3 were bad

Samsung Matte - 18 users replied | 7 LED screens were reported good | 11 were bad
Samsung Glossy - 16 users replied | 8 LED screens were reported good | 8 were bad

The manufactured weeks were random for the most part. I believe there was 1 person with a week 21 laptop, but he didn't have any problems.

So looking at this data, ~96% of LG matte users had good screens, with all users satisfied with their screen. However the glossy screens were only 50%.
With the Samsung matte, ~39% of the screens were good, and again with the glossy screens, it was 50%.

Adding those up:
Matte – 30 good, 12 bad - ~72%
Glossy – 11 good, 11 bad - 50%

LG – 26 good, 4 bad - ~87%
Samsung – 15 good, 19 bad - ~44%

Overall: 41 good, 23 bad - 64%

With this data, it seems if your chances of getting a defect-fee MacBook Pro would be pretty good with a matte screen, but only 50/50 with a glossy... The LG screens also seem to have less defects..

Again make what you want of it.. this isn't scientific.. none of these MacBook Pros probably came in the same shipment except a few, but I dunno any other way to gather the needed data.

My matte Samsung display is definitely off-white (yellowish) in the bottom third, but it's not nearly as extreme or obvious as some of the examples I've seen posted online. It's annoying but minor.

See attached screenshot.

I guess I got lucky. I had the glossy screen and it was Samsung. It was manufactured in the 24th week though so maybe there have been some adjustments. The entire screen had a greenish hue, but that was completely fixed by recalibrating it. I have no dead pixels either. I have tried to find flickering at all levels of brightness and have not seen any kind of flicker at all.

I am extremely pleased so far with this machine!

The thing is that I dont know anymore. It seems like the bottom right seems to display some sort of yellowish thing but the rest of the bottom is fine. Its really weird. So I guess I do have some yellow...
