Definitive 1.1.3 Upgrade and Jailbreak Guide

OK I just deleted my post because guess what....

IT WORKS !! well atleast I see the carrier which is awesome and i see installer app, but I havent put my music on but thanks man you are awesome!
 
So besides some dependent apps, what are the other risks involved here? Could we have a list of some sort posted with the instructions maybe? I've heard about not being able to play DRM protected music, something with ringtones....?
 
Can someone explain to me if there is a way to get more options or things in the installer on the iPhone? Most of this stuff won't work because its all for 1.1.1 and 1.1.2 and I want to customize my home screen and stuff.
 
I went through all the sets fine, but I could never get my backup to work. I tried restoring my backup after i downgraded to 1.1.1 and it said that it was for the wrong version, and when i finally upgraded to 1.1.3, it said the iphone refused the backup.


who got this to work? I don't want to start over without all my texts and photos and settings. anyone gotten to jailbreak AND retain their settings?
 
wow this sucks

i did start what it said in the instruction of upgrading to the 1.1.3. and it upgraded fine and when i went to downgrade it keeps giving me the same error with the (1) and it dosent change at all any uggestions will be appretiated thank you

Personally, I've only run into Summerboard that doesn't work. I'm sure there are more, and as time goes on I'm sure we'll see updates to all these updates just like in the past.

As for actual iPhone features that do not work and that don't yet have a fix for them, there is only DRM'd music not playing that I've seen. I'll add a note to the guide, but remember that this was just released.

What exactly do you want? Remember to install Community Sources to access most of the software. Things like Customize and Summerboard are unlikely to work until they are updated, but you can at very least move around the icons since its 1.1.3.

That is one caveat that I just noticed, as you mentioned it. It appears the drama surrounding NateTrue's premature release was a bit justified, then. I had assumed that the ringtone fix in the final step also fixed the problems with music, but I guess I was wrong. This is where the "you're responsible for any changes you make to your phone" provision comes in. 🙄

Ringtones do work with the fix off Installer.app, though, and I haven't encountered the carrier problem.



This works fine on phones that are 1.1.2 out of the box (such as mine). The only thing you cannot do, however, is downgrade your baseband now. You're also fine restoring the back up off of iTunes, it won't mess with your jailbreak.



The source on rapidshare does not matter, and the "chmod" line handles the problem with it not being executable.



Some applications that relied on the way things were done in 1.1.1 and 1.1.2 will not work, no (such as Summerboard). As always, you are jailbreaking your phone right after the jailbreak was released - a risky thing. However, there is nothing inherent that makes 3rd party apps in general not work, and Summerboard is the only app so far that I've run into that doesn't work on 1.1.3. Updates for these apps will be out soon enough.

Well ive seen videos of peoples iphones and ipod touches, and they have made it so you could have a background on the icon home screen and you can scroll down and stuff. What program do I need to install to do that?

Yeah, Apparently the ringtone "fix" is to put de-DRMed copies of those ringtones in place of the DRMed ones. Of course, the same would work for your DRMed music--if you had the inclination.

I had an interesting time getting this all "working," but I am happier waiting for either a real-life jailbreak from the iPhone dev team, or whatever Apple comes out with, provided it doesn't suck.

Question, though. Whenever I was in iPhone 1.1.1 and jailbreaking it, I did have one problem--the 1.1.1 sw (with 1.1.3 baseband) thought I had an invalid SIM card (I am an "honest" full AT&T iPhone plan customer)--Did you guys get that too?

ok i pluged it in to itunes and everything is great!! sweet! so yea the guide works just fine for windows users too

That would be Summerboard, which isn't updated for 1.1.3 yet.

Aha, that would explain why I thought the ringtone fix would work. I checked the package from sleepers.net and it ended up being a set of m4r ringtons. And here I thought they had actually come up with a fix for it, instead of the silly workaround. Ugh.

You're probably smarter in waiting for the "real" (quotes since this is technically the real one, just released early by NateTrue) one to be released by the dev team, and I'm sure I'll be downgrading and upgrading again to switch to that one. This is just so people who are going to try the jailbreak now anyway don't screw up what we know how to make work already.

In 1.1.1 with the 1.1.3 baseband, it will say that because of the disparity between the versions. Yes I got it too and it didn't affect anything once this was all done.

The backups usually restore correctly regardless of what version of the software they were made under, so I'm not sure what's happening here and its the first time I've heard it.
 
please will someone answer me.. ino im doing it right.. ive held both butttons until it turned off.. as soon as it did.. i release the sleep/wake button and the screen was black nd the recovery in itunes came up.. and im still getting error 1😡😡😡🙁🙁🙁🙁

Sorry SBik2, with so many replies coming in its hard to keep track of who I've replied to.

If you try restarting your iPhone again, can you get back to the Home screen? (Press and hold both buttons for about 10 seconds, then press the top button to start it.) If you can, try doing the steps again and see if it works this time around. If it doesn't work when you try it again or if you can't get back to the home screen, try restoring to 1.1.3 instead of trying to downgrade (ie. start with step 1 again and start over).

sometimes i can reboot.. and sometimes i need to open independance while in DFU.. and hold sleep/home button then reboot normally..ive been trying for 2 hours and no dice..
(and thx sbrocket.. i wasnt trying to whine.. but ive been trying for a while and just want to get it to work:cool so thx a lot 🙂
also i just tried again right now.. and also it didnt work again

What about trying to restore 1.1.3 again and going from there?
 
Ok, I'm going through this very slowly...

When I run "read this" through the terminal it doesn't pick up my iphone as running 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 with installer. it obviously is, i checked to make sure in settings, and installer is there.... whats up?

I'm sorry SBik2, but I have no idea what's happening here. Error 1 is only supposed to occur when the iPhone is in the wrong restore mode. I'll keep looking, though, and update here (and send you a PM) if I see anything that might give more information about this. Until then...enjoy 1.1.3? That's part of why jailbreaks are such an uncertain thing even if we pin down a method that seems to work most of the time. 🙁

Coolou424, I've only see this sporadically and only with iBrickr before. Can you try using iJailbreak? Otherwise, wait for me to update the guide when the office Dev Team jailbreak is posted (which could be as soon as in minutes, then I just have to update the guide).

hey no prob.. ya im confused to 🙄🙄 but hey wutever you(or anyone can do) is more than i could ask for..🙂🙂
1.1.3 is fine.. (but jailbroken is always better 😀😀😀😀)
 
What is iJailbreakme and how would I go about using that and continuing with your guide? (Which is fantastic by the way, I think I speak for everyone when I say thanks for all the quick help and tips)
