That picture from TwitPic is from MuscleNerd, of Dev Team fame. This shows MuscleNerd has sucessfully unlocked iOS 4.

Sorry about the confusion. That is indeed MuscleNerd's iDevice. Meant to illustrate that the DevTeam does indeed have both a jailbreak and unlock for 4.0 firmware.

@benflick Thanks for clearing this up. I thought that viewers would read the info on TwitPic page (MuscleNerd in BIG letters) I forgot most posters here seem to have lost the ability to read. SIGH

No it doesn't it just means he's able to trick the old baseband into working with 4.0 but the bazillion people who have a 3GS NOT from the first 4 months (aka the current baseband) and the people who will buy a 4.0 device (with the new baseband) this really isn't applicable to. This only applies to those on an old baseband from 3.1.2 or 3G owners, which are a small and shrinking minority, and almost nonexistent when 4.0 comes out.

A general unlock will be one that'll unlock a 3GS or iPhone 4 off the shelf TODAY\NEXT MONTH... NOT one that has 10 items of qualifiers that almost nobody meets.

The baseband and bootrom are not the same thing.

Musclenerd unlocked the new baseband. The 3.x basebands are incompatible with the 4.0 firmware. You can't have the 4.0 firmware with the 3.x baseband.
At least that was the case with the 3.0 firmware and the 2.x basebands.

OK now I'm TOTALLY confused. Here's what I have:

- 2 week old iPhone 3GS 32GB
- Modem Firmware 05.13.04
- iOS 4.0 Gold Master

Your above post indicates that I should be able to jailbreak\unlock per Musclenerd's method, but my understanding based on dozens of other threads is that's not the case.

Which is it? Supporting Details Please. :)

MuscleNerd/DevTeam has a jailbreak and unlock ready for OS 4.0, but they are not releasing it until 4.0 is released to the public.

Since you don't have access to it, you cannot jailbreak/unlock...

Couldn't have said it better myself, dhlizard.
The Dev Team is worried that if they were to release an unlock before iOS 4 is released on June 21, that Apple will try to stop the unlock by adding a new baseband. That, in turn, may prevent you from unlocking your iPhone on 4.0, possibly forever.

Then how are so many on here claiming to have a jailbroken and unlocked 4.0 with newest baseband?

I haven't seen a single post here of anyone claiming to have unlocked the new firmware (other than MuscleNerd) and I posted that.

There is a beta jailbreak tool for 3G (only) and some "bundles" to allow 4.0 jailbreak on 3GS for those who understand how to use them.

But that is only for jailbreak.

Since you are in a hurry, you will need to read more, follow tweets of jailbreak hackers and use Google. Or you could just wait a couple of weeks and the tools will be available to everyone.

This is awesome news.

Will Musclenerd confirm the baseband he has done this on????

If it is indeed the new baseband I guess we can expect the new iphone 4 to be unlockable as likely to be the same - yes?? A bit like the same scenario last year with the iphone 3GS, they had the baseband unlocked before the device was released as it was the same as the 3G

confused...

At this moment, no. You can jailbreak now using Spirit. After 4.0 is released on June 21, an unlock tool will be released. More details will be posted on this thread and I'm sure many others after that date.

Thanks for the reply...one more question..once the phone is unlocked, will I be able to download ios4 onto it???

Thanks for the help!!

The Dev Team will be asking you to update to iOS4 before the unlock. The unlock they have is for iOS4. Once you have iOS4, and it's unlocked, don't update the software to any new updates without checking here first.

I'm sorry to kill the buzz, but the twitpic posted by MuscleNerd does not prove that MuscleNerd has unlocked 5.13.04. I don't doubt that he may have done so using sherrif_hashim's exploit, but this pic doesn't prove it. msft has updated blacksn0w to unlock 5.11.07 on a 3GS with OS 4.0, and MuscleNerd is certainly capable of updating ultrasn0w to do the same for 4.26.08. This pic could just as easily show a phone upgraded to a custom 4.0 ipsw and unlocked on a previously-unlocked baseband.

You're right, the picture doesn't prove that the 4.0 baseband has been unlocked.
Last year, when the 3.0 beta's were out, the Dev Team tried to use the 3.0 beta accompanied with the 2.x baseband, which was unlockable. This method didn't work, because the old baseband was unable to communicate to the new firmware. Instead, the Dev Team released Ultrasn0w, which unlocked the 3.0 baseband.
This is what I assume is happening this year, as well. I could be wrong, though.

But, as I said, msft has already proved that the blacksn0w can be fixed to work with the new baseband and 4.0. If I know MuscleNerd, that will have been the first thing he did when he jailbroke his personal phone. MuscleNerd has already shown that he doesn't believe in ugrading basebands unless there's a compelling reason.

For the record, I have no doubt that they will release an unlock for 5.13.04; MuscleNerd has said that they will. My only point is that these pics are no evidence that MuscleNerd's personal phone already uses it.

Right. By me saying "This is what I assume is happening this year" I meant that the Dev Team will release an unlock for the new baseband. Not that the 4.0 firmware wouldn't work with the 3.x baseband. While msft was sucessful, his method is still very buggy and not very practical at this time.

Cheers for clearing that up, guess we need Musclenerd to confirm the 4.0 GM software baseband has been unlocked.

So from what I have been reding here and elsewhere, those of us with 5.12.1 baseband 3.1.3 should just wait until the 4.0 unlock is released.

When it is released I should upgrade, erase my info (I want to sell my 3g), then jailbreak/unlock?

Or instead of erasing should I restore as a new phone to 4.0 then jailbreak/unlock?

I think I'm holding onto my 3gs till 4.0 and the JB/UL tools are out phone prices should be fairly good then. there has been allot of people selling there phones really cheep on craigs lately. I think the combination of iPhone 4 and 4.0 is hurting too. great to the jb.ul coming out so fast!

I'm really hoping that the 4.0 JB/UL comes out really soon after the release of 4.0. I'm leaving the country on the 28th and want dearly to unlock my 3g to be used on a pre-paid SIM in my destination. But since i'm 3.1.3 on the newer baseband, I'm currently hosed.

Here's hoping...
