Musclenerd unlocked the new baseband. The 3.x basebands are incompatible with the 4.0 firmware. You can't have the 4.0 firmware with the 3.x baseband.
At least that was the case with the 3.0 firmware and the 2.x basebands.

That is not correct.

I am running iOS4 with 5.11.xx baseband. It works perfectly.

"works perfect" is quite subjective.... no present JB on 4.0 runs well, or even stable at the moment, so we'll wait till the real deal comes out on the final OS.

People seem to forget that the present 4.0 out is a GM CANDIDATE, which means it's subject to approval before it's titled Gold Master, aka Final Release... people think GM means it's the release version... it very well may be, but there's a big difference between a Presidential Candidate, and a President. Educate yourself, don't just follow others.

I've had no issues with my JB GM "CANDIDATE." What are the issues?

Seriously? Search GM 4.0 Jailbreak bugs\issues\incompatibility ... there's dozens of forums showing exactly what works and what doesn't. The current process is patchwork at best, and until the real-deal comes out it'll remain as such.

Every part of the Apple firmware/OS iOS4 GM works perfectly.

Now Cydia apps are another matter. LockInfo and SBSettings, both betas, are now working very well.

I don't care what the blogs say, the Apple part of the firmware is very stable and works at 100%.

And every one of my App Store apps are working at 100%, I have tried them all.

After all, I am speaking from experience, not quoting someone else.

So, the apps that haven't been updated yet aren't working? No s, Sherlock.

The firmware and the jb are fine. I've been using it since GM release.

More proof from Dev Team that a 4.0 carrier unlock is in the works.
Musclenerd just tweeted this: "At the risk of confusing those waiting for 05.12 unlock... http://tinyurl.com/devhelp (ultrasn0w for 4.0, 04.26.08 only!)"
He links to the Dev Wiki where it says: "A new ultrasn0w capable of unlocking 4.0's baseband isn't yet released because both the final 4.0 and iPhone 4 are coming out next week. Please be patient."
Basically, we already knew this. This just further assured those in need of a new unlock. (Like myself):D

hei what after the unlock is released will we be able to downgrade our baseband i just want to go to the earliest baseband after being stuck on 5.12.01 for 4 months will i be able to downgrade after unlock comes or would i have to die with 5.12.01:):)

Just to make sure I have this right before buying used...

After reading almost all of this thread, I just want to make sure I understand things before buying a used 3GS in the next week or so. The one I'm looking at is running OS 3.1.3 with modem firmware 5.12.01. From what I've read, only jailbreak is available for this, not unlock. But in the coming weeks the DevTeam will be releasing the unlock for iOS 4 and possibly an unlock for 3.1.3 as well. Is this correct so far? So I could purchase this phone and wait a few weeks for the hack release, either directly unlocking 3.1.3 or updating to 4.0 and unlocking, right? Lastly, are there any other relevant specs I should look for on this phone, or are OS and firmware enough?

Thanks for your help; I know some folks have been launching lots of newb questions without prior reading, and I tried not to be one of them.

You will able to unlock, not downgrade your baseband.
You can only downgrade your baseband if you have a 3G with 5.08 bootrom. There is no other way to downgrade a baseband.

Old bootrom is preferred in 3GS.

I take it that "old bootrom" means prior to 5.12, but when you say "preferred," does that mean what DevTeam is likely coming out with won't unlock a 5.12, or that the the process will just be more complicated? Even with running 5.12, would it be an option to upgrade to iOS 4 and wait for the unlock?

Again, I really appreciate the advice and answers. I'm only in the States for a couple of weeks, and my Craigslist market is relatively small for used 3GSs, so I can't be that choosy as I look to buy in the next few days.

Jeez, newbies, stop repeating the same question.

Translation for Newbies:

Question: I have xyz baseband which cannot be unlocked at this time
Answer: WAIT

Okay, Consultant, I get your frustration. But when someone else responds that an older bootrom is "preferred," then that's an ambiguous statement to any reader. A bootrom is either workable for unlocking or it isn't. Hence my question of clarification.
Thanks to all who can help me on this issue...

You are confusing bootrom with baseband.

Old bootrom in 3GS currently has untethered jailbreak except for Spirit which is gone in iOS4 as Apple closed the exploit (not sure what new jailbreak for iOS4 will be)

Baseband is 4.26.xx or 5.11.xx(both unlockable) 5.12.xx or 5.13.xx (both not unlockable)

Hopefully we will have some good news this coming week after iOS4 release.

“@MuscleNerd: @htetard yep...the final 4.0 next week will be an even later version and is confirmed unlockable (possibly iPhone4 too)”
