Exactly my situation. I want to delete "Photos" with a passion; I load many cards a day from my video cameras (4) and Photos wastes many minutes a day. Grrr.

Is there any safe way of nuking this crapware?

Depends on the definition of "safe".

You can remove Photos by first disabling SIP in Recovery mode and then using instructions in my post #16. When you are done you should enable SIP again. Removing Photos probably wont cause no ill effects but obliviously you do so at your own risk...

I suspect that later OS update will simply install Photos again so you might want to wait until last El Capitan update ( probably 10.11.5 or .6) before removing Photos if you don't want remove it after every update.

Worked for me too. Finally! SO sick of this crap.

Only snag is it likely won't work after you format the card.

You could either:

1. Delete Photos, instructions on my post #16.
2. Rename MassStorageCamera.app in Macintosh HD/System/Library/ImageCapture. Details in this Reddit thread. I haven't tested this (I no longer use El Capitan) but it should work.

That was months ago I typed that line into Terminal and, yep, Photos is still doesn't open when I insert my CF/SD cards. Those cards are formatted after each session. So hundreds of times reformatted plus an OS update and that terminal command is still kickin' Photos arse and preventing it from auto opening!

I'm glad it works. My experience is different, every time I formatted the SD card Photos opened again regardless of using that Terminal command. I haven't tested 10.11.5 yet if it fixes the problem.

I suspect it might have something to do with the type of the card or the manufacturer? I have no idea why Apple hasn't fixed this months ago!:(

I have CF and SD cards from SanDisk, Transcend, PNY, mostly faster 32 and 64GB cards, and they're fine. No Lexar as they gave me problems in the past. I also used the same terminal command on my wife's Mini and my iMac at work and no Photos app opening every time I insert a card.

Given the amount of pro and serious photogs using Macs, I'm also surprised at Apple's oversight. They're also really slow to release RAW updates for new camera models and driving the last of it's Aperture users to DXo or LR.

[doublepost=1466267697][/doublepost]perhaps the only way to keep this crap off our machines is to erase whatever system we have...start new and find some screen that allows us to stop photos from downloading to our mac. but as someone has said...every time apple auto upgrades to a new system they will put it right back on.

I have used the search feature and can't find the answer to my question, but I its been asked and answered I'm sorry to ask again!

Can I delete the new photos app on my macbook pro and use my old iPhoto? I need to get things moved around in iPhoto and then try the new photos app. I know I can still use iPhoto but I want to remove the new photos app so I don't have two of everything. I am having a terrible time with this new photos app, I had all my photos organized in Events then broken down into albums by date or occasion. That worked great for me and now in photos everything is out of order and the newer photos that I had yet to sort are mixed in with everything else and I can't seem to merge or add the events. I hate this new app! And at the very least I would like to go back to my iPhotos and get everything where I want it then back it up to a external hd. I would like to delete the new Photos file and when I decide to try it again start from scratch with a clean slate. Photos has duplicated so many of my photos it crazy.
[doublepost=1472528811][/doublepost]Every time Photos launches, my MacBook crashes. I need to sync my iPhone but I can't because photos opens automatically and my computer crashes every time
