mywi working now!

Hi again. I restored my iphone, re spiritjb and did the rock thing. I'm working and loving it. Question: on my imac snow leopard I can surf the web but it will not send mail. On my macbook it does both, sends mail slowly and surfs any idea why my mail wont find my send server on the imac with mywi? Last issue then all is perfect. Even now I'm loving this capability. Thanks everyone.

Totally agree man. I didn't end up buying MyWi because of Rock. I only wanted native tethering anyway though so I ended up editing CommCenter myself with a hex editor.

Lots of people on here (including myself) have lost a lot of time trying to fix whatever Rock randomly decides to break. It forced me to restore my phone twice which is enough for me to never touch anything Rock related again. I guess it looks prettier than Cydia, but it's a steaming pile of crap under the hood.

So how do you buy MyWi without having to go via rock?

Maybe this will help those that have not considered it.

NOW is the best time ever to get over your fear of ROCK and get WiFi purchased. With the release of 4.0 only weeks away and a 4.0 jailbreak to follow on shortly after, you would then have a very fresh update to 4.0, install Cydia and be able to jailbreak and have to only load the No Rock version, thus keeping the dreaded Rock off of your iPhones.

I do not believe ROCK is your problems as I have used it for over a year and never ever had a problem with it but to each his own. I believe the problem is in loading excessive jailbroke apps from Cydia or ROCK that are NOT compatible with EACH other. Has nothing to do with ROCK and until HARD evidence is provided...it aint at fault (IMO)

Fail. You clearly have no idea what your talking about.

Applications work fine with mobilesubstrate. Adding Rock causes crashes and instability. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that most developers haven't tested their apps for compatibility with Rock.

Why should they? Why should they go out of their way and make their apps compatible with proprietary junk that only works with a handful of apps?

Take a second and think before posting. Next time you might save yourself (and me) some time.

yeah, rock sucks and is completely pointless.

Your obviously as smart as a box of rocks! Why dont you friggin read and try to understand what your fanboy tunnel visioned mind refuses to comprehend. I did not say anything about developers having to make sure their apps work with ROCK...I SAID that too many jailbroke apps that are not DESIGNED TO WORK WITH EACH OTHER are what is causing most of the problems!!!

Why do people like you have to be on every friggin thread and try to demean simple posts. I HAVE NOT HAD A SINGLE PROBLEM WITH ROCK AND CRASHES!!! I also dont use more then a half dozen jailbroke apps from BOTH CYDIA and ROCK so as I stated UNTIL you can provide SOLID evidence, then take your opinion and keep it to yourself or post without insulting others!!!

In addition, my intent was to help people get WiFi on their phones with a SIMPLE understanding that when 4.0 is released and it is jailbroken, then they will be able to use the Cydia no Rock version with a clean install of no ROCK files or problems that everyone insists are there. I was trying to help people and then express MY OPINION...and how did you help anyone with your simple minded arrogant post?

I know EXACTLY what I am talking about, because I am the ONE WITH NO FRIGGIN problems with ROCK or crashing!!!:mad::mad:

Apparently the ONLY one ROFL!! I wish I was as lucky. I do have a lot of Cydia apps installed, so that certainly could be the reason for my crashes before I removed Rock. Funny thing is, I removed my two Rock Apps and the Rock Extensions and I haven't had a crash since.

Your mileage may vary...

if you want HARD evidence do some research instead of assuming your experience with rock is the only one. There are plenty of sources documenting the legitimate problems with Rock.

When I uninstalled Rock I lost all voice-mail. Had to restore to get it back. Not a fan of Rock at all.

Will the No Rock version be updated like the Rock version is? In Cydia the no rock version is 3.4.3b and the Rock version is 3.5.2.

I just bought the Rock version. Not sure what the best way to keep up to date will be. I jailbroke my phone just for MyWi to use with an iPad. Not totally sure how all this works, updating etc.

does the 'mywi no rock' work for anyone anymore?

i get a whole bunch of error when i try this now.

I just tried it out after reading your post to see, and it's working fine for me. No errors so far, been using it for about 10 minutes now.

I can't speak about stability or other bugs of Rock. But the main reason to avoid Rock is that it takes shortcuts to speed up installation of packages. But this means the consistency of the installed programs and the APT installation database cannot be guaranteed (APT tracks what is installed).

It should work just fine. It's just that when Rock crashes during install things can be odd. Much like leaving the house in a hurry for an emergency, you let the water running because you weren't next to tap when the phone rang (so now you forgot to place everything in a 'safe state' again).

btw, one thing I noticed is that either MobileSubstrate or MiWi 3.4.3 crashes on iOS4 :-(

Well I just had my iPhone JB on Tues. Let me see if I have this straight ?

I have Rock and MyWi working I guess on a trial period ? Someone else did my JB with Blackrain so I'm not exactly sure how all this was done.

After the trial period you pay $9.99 , then you install No Rock .... BEFORE ....you delete Rock ?

I thought someone else said to delete Rock then install No Rock ?

Once you pay for the app and install the license onto the phone, then you can go to NoRock site, install, then delete RockApp and RockApp Extensions.

Ok , thank you.

So just go to Cydia and find the Rock App and remove but where do you find the Rock Extensions ? I'm sorry this is all new to me. I seen the Rock App and modify options but didn't see Extensions ? Guess it will come up in a search on Cydia ?

Cydia/Manage/Packages...just remove them

My Problem with Rock...

Admittedly, I am new to jailbreaking as I have tried it twice in the past two days. I have an iPhone 2g with no intention of upgrading to an iPhone 4 any time soon and will be getting an iPad at the end of July. Decided that I would jailbreak my phone and see if MyWi actually worked so that I could save a little money on the front end and just get a WiFi iPad (and a lot of money on the backend and not have to deal anymore with ATT as well).

Anyway...

Have successfully jailbroke my iPhone twice using Redsn0w and have twice tried to run Spirit. Both times, Spirit has locked up my iPhone causing me to have to do a restore, the first one even being a complete erase and start over restore. So I am thinking there is definitely something wrong with Spirit/Rock.

So...

Is there no way to get MyWi other than through Rock via Spirit?

If not, that just blows!

I just tried uninstalling Rock and now my phone is stuck on the reload springboard screen.

Help!!

Edit: it finally restarted, thank God

I'm having the same issue Moyank and it has gone through 3 cycles now on the boot screen.... I got a bunch of errors when trying to install the new MyWi that's 4.0 compatible and it said it had to uninstall the old one and then after exiting Rock locked up. I did a hard boot and now am in this endless cycle and am not too happy! Did you do anything else like plugging it in and how long did it go? If this keeps up, I guess I will be restoring tonight.
