Open a terminal window, key in the entire fix starting with the word defaults and ending with the number 1, then press return. Close your terminal window.

Worked well for me, but I had to close my mail program and reopen it before it worked.

Many thanks to the user who found this solution.:p

Deleting mail - after deletion cursor advances to next newer item

Hi,
All of you coming here after a google search, bwthor found a solution which is way below, so for convenience I'll copy it here:
open up a terminal (either type in "terminal" in spotlight search (the magnify glass in top right corner) or in the Finder (New Folder Window) Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal) and enter:
defaults write com.apple.mail IgnoreSortOrderWhenSelectingAfterDelete 1
I can confirm it works on Snow Leopard, Mail 4.5.

Thanks bwthor! Works with 5.2 on Lion 10.7.3

I'm not sure, but it looks like this issue was addressed with the latest Mail that came out with Mountain Lion. Anyone else notice it?

Cool, thanks for the tweak. I'm not sure why this didn't come up in my numerous Google searches to change this behavior pre-2012, but I had given up on it until this popped up in my Subscriptions folder.

Were you born a Jerk or did you have to work at it

1. I agree with the gentleman-the way the mac mail handles deletions is inefficient and illogical.

2. Unlike you, my time and I guess his time are valuable so we would rather have a more efficient program especially when dealing with many emails-and less do I want to get and learn another program. Again, you have much time on your hands but I don't.

3. You have a problem with him expressing an opinion? Or, is that internet jargon for "saying something which is not factual"? and therefore of no moment?

4. Do you really think whether something is logical or not is subjective? I guess you don't know what that means.

Anyway, it has been nice kicking your ass.

I'm sure they're getting out the violins in Cupertino for you.

You realize that by saying what "should" happen you're expressing an opinion, right?

It's always been like that, I don't mind it, and there's no way around it.

Couldn't have said it better myself, actually. What is the big deal? If you don't like it you can either adapt or use a different program. It's not costing you anything other than your time.

No, in my case it reverted back the annoying way and the terminal command does not appear to work any more.

One thing I've liked about Apple was their concern for usability -- is seems that is no longer a concern of theirs... sad

fix worked for me

If it didn't work for you try:

Close Mac Mail; open terminal (applications-utilities-terminal as posted above); paste the string as posted; hit the return key; close terminal; reopen Mac Mail.

Thank you to the original poster and thanks to those who posted the solutions plus specific instructions.

As to the cretin who had nothing to add: you have a personality disorder; seek help. Or, perhaps you are simply very young and you'll age out of your anti-social behavior. Either way - go away if you have nothing helpful to add.

Thank you for "fix selection after delete"

Thank you very much, this was driving me crazy!!@!!

Solution Paraphrased:
open up a Terminal and enter:
defaults write com.apple.mail IgnoreSortOrderWhenSelectingAfterDelete 1

Terminal Command Doesn't Work on Inbox - Only Trash & Junk

Found this on another forum...
Mail has a hidden preference to turn this off.

open terminal and type:
defaults write com.apple.mail IgnoreSortOrderWhenSelectingAfterDelete 1

Thank you so much for this - I'm losing my mind though. The terminal command only works on mail in my Junk & Trash folders, but NOT on mail in any of the accounts in my Inbox.

Does ANYONE have any idea why this would be or what I can do to fix it?

Any response much appreciated.

Amanda

Thank you (don't forget to close & reopen mail)

Awesome, thank you! For those of us who (at first) thought it didn't work, don't forget one needs to close, exit, then reopen their email before this gets loaded into the program (it looked like it didn't work, but I had left email open.
BUT this is tremendous, thank you again!:)
