I believe the way iTunes Match works in iOS6 is much better. It is now a streaming service and you no longer have to "manage" what songs are on your device.
From what I understand, the way it works now is that it smartly streams/downloads/caches songs you play and songs that will be playing next. But more importantly it now also automatically purges songs that have been played.
It seems you now have access to all of your music but all your music only takes up a limited amount of space at any time. So you might have 100GB of music in your library but with the caching and purging that 100GB might never take up more than 200MB. Because of the automatic purging, the whole downloading and deleting is then made irrelevant. If you want to have to manually manage your storage then you wouldn't turn in iTunes Match in the first place.
With the previous way it worked, it didn't make much sense to me to turn on iTunes Match on my iOS devices. Why would I use the cloud when I still had to manually manage the storage? The newer way makes more sense.
What would be great is if you could manually set the purge capacity. But I'm not sure how they determine when songs are purged from the cache. It could be a strict size, could be based on your library size, or it could be based on number of songs. Or it could be even more complicated and based upon albums, playlists, play counts, or some other factors concerning the likelihood of it playing again.
You can still manually delete individual apps, photos, videos, and other stuff. This is just concerning music when you have iTunes Match turned on. You don't have to manually delete music anymore to free up space because it never takes up much space. iTunes Match now purges cached music automatically more aggressively in the GM of iOS6. You never have much of your device storage taken up by music no matter how much music you've played. In effect, it is now a streaming service that intelligently downloads the next song in advance so that there is also no longer that second or two delay like other streaming services.
Basically Apple has combined the best of both worlds.
The weird thing is that you can still delete individual albums with iOS6 & iTunes Match on the iPad - just not on the iPhone.
Nope. Not working for me on my iPad (3rd Generation)
He's right, you can delete Albums on then iPad. You can't delete individual songs
I have found that if I have Itunes Match turned on then download albums using the download cloud icon on my phone I can then turn off Itunes Match and the music will still be on my phone and I can then swipe to delete individual songs. So for me the only thing missing in ios6 is Individual song download when Itunes Match is on.
I just tried this and it worked for me. I guess you can stream music now with iTunes Match and no longer have to actually download the songs.

Clear your music off your phone then "stream" some music. Then go into usage and see what it says.
You will be disappointed.![]()

Why would you be disappointed? I believe it's reporting the songs that are cached. They are automatically purged so it's not like when you manually download. When you manually download, the songs are there permanently so you have to manually delete them.
of course caching takes up some space. But it's not much since it's only temporary. It doesn't continuously grow like downloading does. But it's taking up space!?
i just deleted all my music, and then went to setings - usage - music - 0 mb
then listened to 3 songs, went back to setings-usage-music and now it has 17.7 mb. i dont think thats cache or am i wrong ? it seems to much for being cache
I have tested this more than once.
I played music over the course of a week, travelling to/from work and checked usage to see that it was showing nearly 1gb of space used. I continued to play music for another couple of days and sure enough the figure had risen. It continued to use up space as I played more music until I manually purged the music from my device.

You were right. My usage was growing with each song I listened to which defeats the point of streaming. I'll stick with Spotify for true streaming. If I'm going somewhere where I know I won't have connection ability then I'll throw a couple of albums on my phone.
If this is a concern for you then Spotify is not the solution:

Thanks for posting this. Back to iTunes Match I go. At least that cache can get be reset with a simple simple flip switch. Crazy!
