To be honest I'm surprised more people haven't noticed this major flaw in Spotify.. This pushed me to a combination of RDIO and iTunes Match.

I had heard about this before, but completely forgot about it until you mentioned it. Plus they charge $10 a month when Match is only $25 a year so it's a give and take.

Because I only want to download certain songs? Because I want to be able to remove songs of my own volition if I'm running out of space, but don't want to run the risk of everything getting deleted by toggling Match on and off? Because there isn't 100% 3G data coverage, and I might want to download certain songs over wifi before I leave the house? I might have several GB of music on my device yet want to download a sizeable app, so I can decide to delete certain albums to free up space without having to toggle Match and run the risk of it deleting everything, leaving me with no music? Because if I download the song properly, I'm guaranteed it in decent quality, even if the network is bogged down and it takes longer to get there?

Streaming + the option to Download = Better than streaming minus said option, unless you don't really care for music. iTunes Match was never just "a streaming service", it was an opportunity to match your entire collection across all of your devices and have them available for download or stream whenever you want, there wasn't the caveat that you can only have songs available for your mobile device when you are in an area with good network coverage.

Again, it really adds nothing to the service, only removes. That is poor form. Does exactly the same thing, just removes the ability to download individual songs (yet in a great burst of consistency still allows downloads of entire albums, which you still can no longer delete without first switching off iTunes Match despite ostensibly being housed on your device). It's the stupidest, most ill-considered downgrade I've come across in years.

100% Agreed.

This new iTunes Match does suck. The only thing I've liked about it is that I can buy a song on my iMac and have it instantly on the iPhone. Anyone know how to Mass Download all iCloud songs to the iPhone??

Anyone else having issues with playlists not syncing via iTunes Match on iOS 6? Songs are downloading in my library, but I've got no playlists showing up.

My playlists are sync'ing alright. For anyone who wants to know how to mass download all songs from iCloud: Add all songs to a playlist on your computer, go to that playlist on the iDevice, and at the bottom of the list, click the download icon.

I toggled the iTunes Match switch, restarted the phone and reopened the Music app. Playlists are now downloading as they should.

So, is it really true you can no longer delete songs and albums manually on the music app?? I've googled about the subject and apparently the only way of doing that is turning off iTunes Match and then on again, resetting the songs on your device.
The finger swipe -> delete function seems to be gone.

Seriously, Apple?
This is a SERIOUSLY big problem. Like, "not using iTunes Match anymore" big. I've been using Amazon Cloud Player for the past few months on my iPhone because I got sick of the issues with Match on the iPhone and it's been a pretty smooth experience, aside from some growing pains. Going back to Match today with hopes that it's improved was not a pleasant experience. Removing the only way to remove music from the app is ludicrous. If I fill up my iPhone, I don't want the OS to decide what gets deleted. It's like they're saying, "Please give your money to Amazon's cloud service, please use Spotify or Mog."

Problem solved, as far as I can tell! Turn off iTunes Match in Settings, swipe to delete in Music, turn Match back on. It doesn't delete what's on the device when you reactivate it.

It doesnt deletes it for me.

Thats one of the things that I liked about itunes Match. I had the ability to get what I wanted on my phone and click off a few buttons to set a download of songs. Then many times when I'm on a long flight, i'll go about removing songs that I've not heard in a while, or don't need anymore from the phone.

This is one flaw on the itunes match. Wish they bring back the old method again.

However, I can now do this via play lists. Throw songs in a playlist and use that as my "master" list. Sucks, but, oh well.

Why would you be disappointed? I believe it's reporting the songs that are cached. They are automatically purged so it's not like when you manually download. When you manually download, the songs are there permanently so you have to manually delete them.

You are missing the point completely from what people are saying and being weirdly defensive about it.

Firstly, do you KNOW it's being cached? Or still downloading? What limit have people reached and does it stop?

Anyways, the reason the new match is AWFUL is because of the following.

From before ios6, I stored music on my phone. PLaylists and some albums, plus songs and albums I'd downloaded through match in the old system. I now can't delete these, I can't delete them on the devices and I can't manage it through itunes. This is absolutely staggering. The ONLY way I can sort my old music is turning itunes match off, sorting it out, then turning it off.

PLEASE ANSWER HOW THIS IS A GOOD THING, AND BETTER THAN HAVING THE OPTION TO MANAGE OUR MUSIC ON THE DEVICE OR AT LEAST THROUGH ITUNES?!

Maybe people live in an area where there is a bad connection.
Or in a building with barely a signal.
Or on the tube.
Maybe on a train which goes through countryside.
Maybe fliying.

Maybe people NEED to download music to their device because streaming isn't an option in that moment.

It's then stuck there. We can't manage that. We have to turn Match off, sort it, and turn it back on. How anyone can defend this is absolutely shocking. Apple have been very slowly deteriorating over the past 2 years. It's depressing to witness.

It's simple how it needs to work.
Match has all your music in the cloud.
This music streams and caches the next songs in advance for smoothness.
You can also keep whatever songs and albums on your device permanently for when you have no data access.
You can delete this music on the device and manage what permanent music on the device through itunes.

The songs you've downloaded through match, automatically deletes next time you synch your phone.

IT'S ****ING SIMPLE!!!!!!!

But not for Apple. Not the new apple. "It just works!" - not any more apple!

Do i sense dissension in the ranks? Nah just kidding man. I feel your anger. I turned off iTunes Match as well. It feels like you are not in control. Sometimes it would skip song after song and after like 3 return to the playlist. Like since it's unable to play it it does it. Couldn't delete it, so I could not re-download it, heh. Kinda weird. Good experience on the iPad though. WTH?

Haha, I'm not as angry as I sounded, just frustrated. This wouldn't have happened with old apple. They've changed a lot on the software side. It all started with Final Cut... And too many decisions are based on business rather than the consumer.

Let's hope they sort the mess out soon. Only joined match last week, didn't think it was a great service but though streaming with ios 6 would be good... Didn't expect them to make it worse.

My biggest concern with not having control over the downloading of individual songs is ensuring my music is available on my iPhone when I'm on the road. I have a very small data plan (because I'm on WiFi 98% of the time), but if I'm traveling for 6hrs I can't have my iPhone streaming all of my music over the cellular network.

However, it looks like you can disable cellular access for Music, in which case I wonder what the player will do? Kick up an error message every time it reaches a song that isn't cached? Be smart enough to only try and play songs available locally? Ignore the setting and stream them anyway?

I did some experimenting and was able to answer my own questions regarding the new music player's behavior with iTunes Match; I'll post my findings here in hopes that they help someone else.

1. You can no longer download or remove individual tracks, but you can download entire albums or playlists. If some of the tracks are already downloaded within that playlist or album, it'll just grab the ones that aren't. You can still download individual tracks that you've purchased from iTunes in the iTunes Store App under the Purchased tab.

2. There is a toggle to enable iTunes Match in both the "iTunes & App Stores" Settings as well as the "Music" settings; I'm not sure why it's in two places, but under the "Music" settings "Use Cellular Data" is set to Off by default. This is good!

3. Here's the best news: when "Use Cellular Data" is turned off and you leave WiFi, the Music App will grey out all of the tracks that are not cached/downloaded on the device. Better still, if you shuffle a playlist with a mix of downloaded and greyed out tracks, it's smart enough to only play the tracks that are available and skip over the ones that aren't (as opposed to attempting to play the disabled tracks and prompting the user to connect to a Wifi network).

Knowing this behavior, so long as iOS 6 doesn't randomly decide to flush my downloaded tracks - it's not so bad.

FWIW......

So I "streamed" music from iTunes Match and then went to settings and turned off "Show All Music" which leaves music that has been "DOWNLOADED". Went to the Music App and all the music that I had stream were there taking up 182MB of space.

I don't think this is working as expected.

you can download entire albums or playlists.

Other than playing the entire album or playlist (while connected to WiFi), how do you do this? Say I am about to get on an airplane and I want to force a download of 5 different playlists. How do I do that (again, short of playing through every playlist)?

That's what I was worried about when reading this thread. I listen to music mostly at work where the cellular connection is dire.

The reason I'm reading this is because I had a corrupted album - some track missing - so I've just deleted it in iTunes (and checked Delete from iCloud), re-ripped it and let Match do it's stuff. Then I found I couldn't delete the original from my iPhone. After reading here, I turned off Match and then could delete it. Problem is that the newly uploaded version isn't appearing

EDIT It's finally downloaded. Took long enough!

me too. im pretty sure that the music is downloaded, not cached or streamed :(

Scroll to the bottom of the playlist and you'll find an iCloud button to download all of the songs in the playlist; if the button isn't there then they're already all downloaded.

I turned off iTunes Match several times, rebooted the phone and STILL all my songs appear in the music app and I can't do anything with them (no titles, duration is 0:00 etc). This is ridiculous. This means I can't use my phone for music, the phone made by the very same company that developed the iPod?

I totally agree with you. I have posted a few times in the Apple Support forum about this and have also submitted a complaint to Apple directly. I'm hoping this is an oversight and not how they envisioned this working. Also, I just found out that the last time I enabled iTunes Match on my phone it wiped out all my music. They did not enhance one thing with the latest release, and instead have brought the service several steps back. I am seriously considering not renewing my subscription.

Holy cow this is stupid. I want certain albums on my iPhone so that I can play them when I'm on a plane. Hello. I need to be able to manage it not trust Apple to decide what is on my phone.

Easy just go old school and plug it into iTunes and sync?

I have a new issue with Match. I was having too many problems with the app locking with the icloud logo nearly every time I opened the app. So I turned Match off, went back into the app and I can still download from the cloud wtf ?

So I have now gone old school myself and just thrown a load of albums on my phone through iTunes. Now I can STILL see my Matched tracks but they are greyed out. Christ they have made a big pile of mess with iOS6

iTunes is a pain in the iOS: go w/ iExplorer

To hell with it, who wants to spend hours struggling with this confusing and stupid software. I can't drag music, or photos, from my CONNECTED iPad to my CONNECTED iPhone, not without taking a friggin' course in the subject or paying for yet more confusing add-ons (iTunes Match, and from what I'm reading here it brings its own set of lovely tar babies to the equation.) I love my Macbook Pro and like Apple hardware but iOS should have had mount capability so you can just use the devices as flash drives. Then you just backup to externals or the cloud, and you're good. IExplorer looks to solve that problem. http://www.macroplant.com/iexplorer/

I never liked that feature because I would almost delete songs by accident. I'm not saying that it should be taken away for those that use that feature, though. I got used to it and wish they kept it for the times when I need to delete through the music app!

An edit button like in Messages wouldn't be out of order as a different way to do it.

----------

Can I ask what might be a stupid question?

Why does it matter? If iTunes Match is managing what you have on your device at any give time and you can add music at anytime, why would you even want to manually delete something?

Because sometimes you aren't in wifi and you don't have unlimited data to handle the streams so you have music you want on your device. Imagine going to play a fav song you haven't listened to in a while and Match deleted it because it hasn't been played etc. annoying.

If you could delete stuff you are tired of on your own that becomes less of an issue.
