Dell Ultrasharp 2005FPW 20.1 Inch Widescreen LCD. $426 with ...

I just bought one of these monitors and hooked it up to my silver 733 PowerPC g4 through the d-sub connector.

However, I can't get it to support the 1600 x 1200 resolution that it's supposed to and there doesn't seem to be widescreen support. Am I gonna have to buy a new video card? I will, but I was hoping not to. What am I missing?

In many states, they also want to collect the difference between your sales tax rate and what you paid to other states. For instance, if you live in a state with a 5% rate, and you buy something in a state with a 4% rate, and you paid that 4% to the state you bought it in, you are expected to pay the remaining 1% to your own state on the use-tax form.

That doesn't make any sense to me at all. How can a state collect sales tax on a transaction that doesn't take place in their state? It's a sales tax, not a consumption tax. If my state sales tax is 5% and I buy something in a state with a tax of 6%, can I get a 1% refund from my state?

I've never lived in a state with such rediculous rules. I certainly wouldn't feel bad about ignoring such a rule for a transaction less than several thousand dollars.

I found it for $440 today ONLY at the small business store. Free shipping, so it's about $475 after tax.

I'll pass on that if I'm likely to find it for much less--I can wait a bit. But if better deals are rare, I may not waste my time looking for them for weeks. I may just accept $440.

Are you sure it's the 2005fpw? It hasn't been on sale for a while (it's now $749). The non-widescreen 2001fp is on sale for around $465.

I'm sure--but the deal may be over by now, and it may be one you can only get by phone: I called to ask questions, and was offered 40% off, good only yesterday and today.

I think I'll keep saving, though, and maybe get a bigger display next year. I'd LIKE a new screen, but I don't yet NEED one.
