Not very thin is it? I wonder what the price points of these iPad killers will be. Isn't the Galaxy Tab around $900 or something?

It's about the CONTENT!

I don't get, that many seem not to get it. Was the word "app" used the way it is now before the iPhone (iOS) Apple OWNS the market here just like they dominated the iPod market. First came the device (iPod) and now iPad, then came the content integration (iTunes) for the (iPod) and the App store for the iPad. It didn't matter how cool the competitive mp3 players were - they were nothing compared to the iPod due in large part because of the iTunes (content) integration. This market - the future of computing will also be OWNED by Apple because of the HUGE lead in the App market. This is even more significant than in the mp3 player arena because at least there, the same content (music) was still available without Apple. In the iOS case - a significant amount of the desired content is NON-EXISTENT for a non-Apple device. Yes Android is second - but it's a far far second place. They came so late to the table. Their market is open - but anyone who has any sense of proper functionality, GUI, efficiency; etc will tell you the comparison of the Apps of iOS and Android don't simply stop at the numbers of apps either. So, even if a company made a more desirable looking (feeling) device, which is a significant IF - without the integration of the Apple apps - they have nothing. Nothing.

I too am one that thinks a 3, 4, 5, 7, 10 sized selection is stupid. have a smaller and a larger tablet...done.

Uggghh...and I'm commenting on the design alone. It's so...1990's. Chunky black plastic housing. Hope the stuff inside and onscreen is better than the crap look of the exterior. Looks like a cheapo Garmin from here.

My thought exactly. Looks like one of their laptops, 7" screen and 1.5" thick, probably weighs in around 4lb too.

I have no problem with competition for Apple, but will someone please make something that is really competition!

It is, is it not? In terms of function (not viewing pleasure/ease) what does the iPad do that the iPod can't? However, ironically, this is no longer a valid argument since the iPod can do a bunch more than the iPad now. That said, I don't really think it is complaining per se, just pointing out a fact.

The interface is completely different. A bigger screen like that changes the way you use the computer, and the OS needs to be changed accordingly.

There is a reason Apple did not just drop OS 4.0 on the iPad the moment it was released.
There is a reason that Google has been insisting that Android isn't ready for larger screen sizes.

The iPod can do a lot more than the iPad, but a user will NOT use it for a lot more than the iPad. The screen makes a dramatic difference, to the point where the usage on the two is almost completely orthogonal.

Besides, I was trying to show that the people who buy these Android tablets (which are truly just an oversized Droid...Dell and Samsung arent even redoing the OS as dramatically as Apple did) are the same ones who said no one will buy the iPad because its an oversized iPod Touch. The point being that their complaints weren't really that it was on oversized iPod Touch, but that it was an Apple product.

Yeah, I'm all for competition, but the flurry of sizes seems a bit peculiar. It seems to me that they may run into issues with pricing. Either people aren't going to be willing to pay an extra $XX for another " of screen size, or the cost is so infinitesimal that no one's going to buy a 3" or 4" tablet, because it's useless and doesn't cost that much less than the 5" or 7".

10" and 5-7" would be fine. 3" and 4" and its just something like an iPod touch. Then it better be $200!

I don't think Apple needs to worry specifically about Dell's 7-in tablet but they do need to be worried about the smaller tablet market in general because in the end, some people care about branding, others care about cameras/usb etc, and some care about size.

As everyone saw with the netbook market, size does matter when it comes to portable gadgets and Apple needs to hurry and come out with a 7" version of the iPad (as there were rumors about this) before Christmas to pre-empt the huge wave of them when more 7" tablets hit in first quarter 2011.

too bad this will surly fail for Dell.
That Streak is nothing but an Android unit. Meh!
But all these tech companies are touting sh** they know nothing about but would look good in their product line up.LOL!
C'mon! Looking at Michael Dell holding that Streak was priceless the other week.
Apple has 100% IQ on their ipad. Everything from the hardware to the software.

Manufacturers are just trying to find some identity right now. They all kinda screwed themselves by adopting the same Android OS, so just like computer hardware, the only way they can differentiate themselves is through different designs/hardware (or UI additions on top of Android).

And since there is no "defacto screen size" yet (like how we had 15" and 17" standards fora very long time with the CRT monitors), they are just cranking them out to test the market to be the "first"

Wrong! the ipad screens are made to order. If they were off the shelf then you could have a valid point.
Sorry kiddo.
Fail!!!

You use belittling speech and extreme punctuation in an insulting manner, yet you publicly write something that betrays your ignorance. That certainly makes you look bad.

All of these tablet screens are built to order. My point was that Apple is sucking up so many of the 9.7" supply, no one else can get an edge in. If someone else wants that size, they have to contract with a manufacturer. The manufacturer tells them, sorry, their capacity is fully allocated to Apple.

There's a limit to how many of these 9.7" screens can be built. That's why Apple had supply issues. Apple arranged for these screens as made to order supplies, and they still can't keep up with all Apple wants. So if Dell went to the manufacturer and asked for a 9.7" screen run, they would get laughed at.

So the next time you decide to laugh in someone's face here, try to get your facts right first. Writing "Fail!!!!" while actually being the one failing is kind of funny though.

Apple laptops come in 5 different bodies types and people think that's normal. I think it's odd that with iPad people complained that 2 was too many ("Why do we need an iPad when it's just a big iPod Touch!?") and now the possibility of 3 types (9", 7", and iPod) is bringing out the same types of comments again.

What is it about laptops that makes 5 types ok when (apparently) 3 sizes of iPad/iPods is "crazy?"

the 5 Apple laptops are not all the same product...macbook, macbook pro and macbook air...each type with different memory and screen size configurations

The other person was talking about the screen sizes, which are only 3 for Laptops and 2 for desktops :)..... Having a 3,4,5,6,7,8,9 inch screens is like giving us a 2.0Ghz C2D 2.1, 2.2,2.3,2.4 Ghz option, ya know ;)

ummmm, Remember Gateway retail stores?

Remember how very different in style and function Gateway retail stores were? Now notice how very similar Microsoft stores are to Apple stores? That's the copying.

Just saying stores existed before misses the point.

Yes it is. But it's hilarious (and sad at the same time) to see all these big name companies stumbling over themselves in a rush to try and copy Apple (again). Quite pathetic actually. :D

Competition is a very good thing.

Glad to see some big name companies stepping into the arena. :)

@ MacRumors, I don't want to be the lame dude who says this is Offtopic but this is totally it, I understand it is an iPad competitor but It's like saying that a straight guy will find another guy hot as if he was a girl because he had long hair

EDIT PS: I Find the Streak pretty hot, I've been using iOS Devices since they came out and experimenting with new stuff is always nice, the other day i Played with an Android Sony Ericsson and it was pretty nice, I wouldn't leave iOS but It will probably turn into a Windows vs OSX Battle in a few years

Na, Dude is totally right! The Tablet is a joke, but if it causes Apple to increase innovation/price performance/features by a micron...its a good thing! Keep making FUGLY tablets Dell, and we can reap the benefits of Apple's reprise.

I think they should call it the "Helen Keller"...

Uh, I don't think you're grasping what it takes to make a competitive company increase innovation. Do you really think by Dell making more FUGLY tablets that it will cause Apple to increase innovation? If you were the front runner in a marathon and nobody was remotely close to catching up with you would you run any faster? I think not. ;)

Perfect! While the others are all focusing on the hardware, Jobs is spending time making sure the content is there and that operation of the device is intuitive. When all these other tablets hit the stores, customers will continue to buy Apple not based on the raw device specs but what the "experience" of using the device is like and what they can do with it. If a cleaner GUI results in the user being able to perform a task quicker and easier, the hardware specs are irrelevant. If the tablet cannot perform a function because there is no App for it or it cannot easily access media the user wants, the hardware specs are irrelevant.

Of course those who do not understand this will continue to confirm it by posting how "people are sheep by continuing to buy anything Apple makes just because it has the Apple logo on it". They just don't get it...

SUPER ugly

Can't believe how ugly this is. Do these people spend NO time on design? And then they wonder why these products fail. (Hello Zune)!

Especially the smaller sizes sound pretty silly ... can you imagine a 4 inch tablet? Well I guess that they had to take the displays that where still available on the marked that Apple showed no interest in and now they throw out whatever they can get. They probably also want to save the time to make user studies of which sizes would work or won't for the user - since they have to play some catch-up they have to rush to the market whatever they can put together.

True, it's similar to what happened with music players as companies tried to cope with the iPod's popularity. "Hey, ours has, um, FM radio!" They seem to think the way computer companies think (which is what they are, of course) where all you have to do to appeal to customers is create a checklist of features stuffed into the device and cut the price. "We've got more USB ports!!!"

Meanwhile Apple (also a computer company) thinks in terms of how things work, not whether they can stuff another checklist item into the box. Average people (not the geeks who post here) like the way Apple's stuff works, and the iPod never looked back despite all that competition. It still dominates the market.

I think we're going to see the same thing with the iPad. Dell will frantically create tons of models with the kitchen sink mentality of check lists. Geeks will loudly bray all over MacRumors that this competition is great, and that the iPad will drop in popularity. And average people will continue buying iPads so that they can enjoy the great OS that just works.
