I have the same thing on mine, but I'm chalking it up to a design element allowing any extra heat to escape should I ever want to use it in clamshell mode. I could be wrong, but seeing as how I've seen the same thing on a few of them, I think they might mostly all be like that.

lol.

I think they just screwed up on the specs. There is no reason for it to bow like that.

I don't mind too much personally, but it is definitely not the best fit-and-finish out there.

My recently delivered 17 MBP had identical bowing/warping. In addition it had the DVD region code preset to 6 with only three changes left (really annoying considering that the new DVD drive isn't compatible with VLC).

Apple is replacing it no questions asked.

Yeah. It's not really an issue with use at this time. everything works fine. I guess it's worth a stop at the store.

I already have an appt tomorrow for them to replace my R2D2 Click-Clack hard drive with one that doesn't beep so I'll just have them look at it then.

Was hoping the MR community had some pointers for convincing them to replace it.

Hard drives beep by default, because of the mechanical, moving parts. Mine beeps too but I'm well-educated with hard drives so I know it's doing its job.

Just call apple and see what they can do for you. It's worth a try and if you can't get them to do anything then I would just try to live with it.

Apple listened to it, saw my MBP FREEZING when it clicked and replaced it without hesitation.

And sorry but I'm not a n00b and have been diagnosing failed hard drives for years! I'm an MCSA and spent my first year in IT diagnosing failed ahrd drives, recovering data and reinstalling windows.

When a drive beeps like it did and then hangs the entire system, that's not "normal"

Trust me when I say that I've heard every click and beep that any spinning drive can make.

Considering everyone's replies, I still went to the Apple Store.

Turns out both 17" MacBook Pro models they had on display were EXACTLY THE SAME.

Left side, very high bow, right side, small bow.

I don't know but as usual, the apple store is just one big internet cafe so 2 guys were pestering me to move along so they could check their email. there wasn't a single sstore employee available. I'll go back at mid-day tomorrow to talk to someone about it.

Oh okay. Sweet :p

I'd believe it and probably brag about it if Steve Jobs had presented it that way, "if your MBP has a bend it's because we've found a genius way to keep fingerprints from transmitting to your display. we call it 'bendy boom"

Damn, I wish mine had that too :( :D

Don't be too angry about the slight imperfection ^__^ I just examined my own MBP and discovered that, when the lid is closed, there is a larger gap between it and the keyboard on the left more so than the right side. I also found out that when I first received it and took it out the box, there was a scratch on the underside of the screen where its aluminum casing meets the keyboard panel when it is fully opened. Made me a bit ticked off at first, though that lasted for only a quick two minutes once I realized that things could be worst :)

Ya know I just got my 3.06 Macbook Pro 15"

And I noticed lil black scuffs on the rounded edge up front which i was able to clean but there's a lil hair line scratch by the standby light. Also underneath it was a little dirty.

I think wherever they swap the the CPU out for custom 3.06 versions of the mac is dirty and don't really handle your new machine with care. I think this probably happened with you.

I'll deal with the hairline scratch because I need the computer, but in general Apple really needs to step it up with the people upgrading these machines.

If its beeping or clicking it means it's failing...

That's actually not true. sorry but I've researched this particular sound.

Basically, the firmware of the hard drive has a power saving feature that parks the heads to conserve power. Well Mac OS has other intentions and it uses the hard drive often or initiates the heads just as they park.

Thus it makes a click and a beep.

It's not bad for the drive just annoying as hell and causes freezes.

Totally agree!

apple's quality has certainly been pretty bad lately but then again I think it's always had issues. I can write an essay on issues I've had with apple laptops since my first one which was a 233Mhz Tangerine iBook.

The computer has horrible video issues
My 600Mhz G3 iBook has a stiff hinge and a cracked casing from the factory.

the issues go on and on.

throw some mortadelll and capicolllo in that monster and then take a solid bite out of it while laughing hysterically

Thought I'd bring this thread back to life.

Whilst at the Apple store the other day, I noticed their 17" model had the exact same bending issue on the lid.

Thought I'd share.

take it back. Apple charges a premium for their stuff. for that, people like me expect nothing less than perfection. don't settle for anything less.

I'll add that my 17" MBP I received last week has slight bowing on both sides. Also the display at my local Best Buy has the identical bowing. I doesn't concern me, but i'll admit I'm not really picky.

I saw this at my Best Buy's Apple table, too. Is this really a widespread problem? Should I go for the 15" instead?
