Pretty soon it will start sounding like UFC events. iPhone 22

:D

That was one of the drivers behind the 3rd Gen iPad just being called "the new" iPad. Internally (like the example above from Apple's online store) it can be referenced as 3rd Gen, but the branding, packaging, badging, etc., is just iPad.

They've been doing that all this time with their computers, using a single name for a product line (Macbook Pro), having an internal model number (MC723LL/A) and people using a simple date reference to ID it (mid-2011).

I'd say it's _very_ likely this next iPhone won't have any additional identifier.

It's the same with cars:

The new 911, internally the 991, easily ID'ed as a 2013 911 :)

Then why would Tim Cook say that Apple is
going to double down on secrecy. He also said that they would go to any measures to secure future products. As far as I'm concerned, this is drastic measures. It's genius. We'll just see on September 12th. I'm writing your name down

Write mine down too. You sound just like everyone who doubted the iPhone 4 story. And what happened then?

He can crack down on security all he wants. The Chinese will still find ways to get out pictures of parts and such.

Or Apple got clever and put out fakes. Not really that clever even.

Regardless, there are good cases to be made for it being fake and good reasons to believe it real...no one is dumb for believing one way or the other.

On the one hand, there seem to be only one set of parts out there. On the other hand, we haven't even seen a working phone.

On one hand we've heard all sorts of reports the next phone will have at least a 4 inch screen, on the other hand the leaks look especially stupid and don't seem to make much sense as they change aspect ratio, resolution and form factor.

one could go on...

BTW, while some doubted the 4 (largely due to the asymmetry of the front camera if I remember correctly), there weren't really that many doubters. And while I remember some calling it ugly, they were relatively few.

Here and on other sites the long phone has been panned by at least 75% commenting (obviously my estimation).

Really? I suspect the Samsung Galaxy S3 has pretty much the same amount of space above and below the screen.
iphone-vs-Samsung-galaxy-S31.jpg

Proportionally, the SGS3 dedicates much less space above and below the screen. Even on absolute terms the SGS3 uses less space above and below.

I agree about the top of the screen, but the thin bezel to the sides and the bottom bezel serve as thumb rest to keep you from accidentally hitting the touch screen.

That is one of my big problems with some Android devices, that and the lack of a dedicated physical home button- especially on my Samsung tablet.

I agree some space should be there around the bottom... but it doesn't need to be as large of an area as Apple made it. The SGS3 above is perfectly usable.

I agree with your assessment, but I believe Apple also needed to use the 'wasted space' to accommodate a larger battery inside, hence the reason to move the camera above the earpiece and shift the home button down a bit. Since the phone will most likely be thinner, they'll need to keep battery life around what the 4S is getting, and this might be the only other way to do it.

Right, but the point is they could have squeezed in a bigger screen if they were so inclined. The SGS3 is a bit too large (4.8") for my tastes... but somewhere in between would have been nice.

People in China Foxxconn make crap. Offer any of them a couple of hundred bucks and they will sneak out whatever they can.

I think the 16:9 iPhone is most likely what the iPhone 5 is. I could be wrong, I could be right, but who really cares.

Just wait until TC takes the stage and then make up your mind

I think he means on the leaked front part, not the 4/4s. And in absolute space, obviously - proportionally it would be almost impossible to get that little space. The s3 screen is HUGE.

My original idea from months ago was another simple doubling, to 1920x1280, that would've kept the a/r of the current phone, made updating apps easier, been possible to make a 1/2 (or 2x depending) res compatibility mode, and given Apple pretty much any phone sized display they would want while staying well over the "magic" 326 PPI.

Now in terms of the available display tech and overall size, required GPU (A5X, but it's hot and power hungry) no clue, it was just a resolution solution.

The parts leaks became too obvious to be accidental to me when someone was able to piece together an entire outer case! To me it seems like Apple strategically planted parts around town and just like they thought, they came together like a lego kit. Although it would make sense that this didn't seem (to my memory) happen for the 4 to 4S unveiling because it is so.. well it's the same design as the 4, so how could you tell the difference in parts?

In that case would it be crazy to think that they weren't going to change the resolution of apps? Meaning no stretching needed? Maybe the new screen space will act as a new notification center feature, that can be utilized and supported down the road by developers.. That's the easiest way I could see it not being a huge pain in the butt. It'd be cool to scroll through notifications, weather, etc without having to use the pull down notification center; if there's even enough space.

I find it funny people are so dead set that "Apple names the iPhone after generation numbers!!!!" when the only IPhone to ever coincide with the generation number was the 4. I original iPhone didn't have a number, 3G was second 3GS was third (and 3 didnt stand for 3rd gen, we know that from the previous 3G) and 4 was 4th and 4S was 5th.

Anyway I'm excited for the new iPhone 4XL to come out :p

He made more scratches on the table than either of the glass panels!

Between the crazy phone scratching, useless finger condoms, and slow unorganized talking I think there might be something wrong with this person

Anyone know if it's just scratch proof or is it stronger against shattering as well? Would be nice if dropping it 4 inches didn't chip the edges. I never thought the 4S scratched easy but was pretty brittle when it came to chips and shattering.

Oh I am glad, I haven't assumed anything bar FACTS. Which are that NO ONE can state this is a genuine Apple part, Apple go nuts when genuine parts are shown, they went nuclear at Gizmodo for the iPhone 4 leak. Apple have not shown or stated anything about the next iPhone, apart from iOS 6.

"I bet it's a fake" doesn't sound like a fact.

iPhone 4. The 4th iPhone. And again, they do use generations, it's evident on their iPad and iPod pages for the refurb store.

The gen numbers are not in the actual name.

No, you can't split up the iPhone 4 in 3 different generations. It was the same phone (especially the white one...). Sorry, that's just the most ridiculous way to number them I've seen.

Why not? They are different. The iPhone changes name once per year, but why would smaller versions not be counted? They are for Macs and iPods that are updated more than once a year. I think it's best for the number in the name to increase by 1 every 2 years, not counting "S" models as full updates.

It's the new "iPhone". Plain, jane, iPhone. Same for the iPad. It's just iPad. It just happens to be new. Like the MacBook in 2010, it was the new "MacBook Air".

I'm glad to see that someone realizes that the 3rd gen iPad was not called "The New iPad".

Replies are in green.

The Apple I, the Apple II, the Apple III.... What would my Mac Pro be called if they just kept going "Apple x"? I don't think Apple should have dropped the number from the iPad, though. Is 3 really that big of a number?

You mean "The new iPhone" or "iPhone 6". The 5th one came out last year.

In the words of Jobs, you are a true bozo.

I guess small things amuse small minds as they say.

Does every thread need to be hijacked with this bs?

I used to say this too, but iPhone 5 would actually make sense. To the consumer 4S is like 4.5, making 5 the next version. No one really knows that the iPhone 4S is the 5th iPhone besides tech geeks.

But it'll be "the new iPhone"

Oh? It made sense did it?

You finally realized that 5 (not 6) is the natural progression after 4?

Glad they taught you math at school sonny.

Some doubling down.
In just a month after making that statement, a ton of parts and possibly an actual assembled iPhone 5 video has been leaked, Sharp admitted yesterday they are shipping new screens for iPhone 5 (something apple is not even acknowledging exists), and a ton of secret Apple material has come out in this week's Samsung v Apple court case, including internal Apple designs for iPhone and iPads (possibly future ones as well, since the iPhone 4 design was made before the ORIGINAL iPhone came out.)

Steve would be livid if he saw what was happening.....

It amazes me how people consider this to be the same as the iPhone 4/4S?!

Look at all the past iPhone screens, all of them. They all look the same! This new phone is a considerable change from the existing 4/4S platform. Different size, shape, proporsion, components etc etc. the only similarity is the fact it is made out of glass and metal - two of the best, most durable materials out there.

As for the w**nker commenting about the numbering, who cares. For the past four phones they have used the same formula for naming phones, which coincided with major and minor updates - at makes perfect sense they would continue this and refer to the next phone as the iPhone 5. It is also probable they will simply refer to it as iPhone.

And lastly, the person who thinks there is no noticeable between the 3GS and 4GS is deluded. I personally only ever upgrade whole numbers on iPhones because it falls in line with my contract and means I get a free phone. The screen alone between the 3GS and 4 is a big enough change, let alone the speed and camera - especially on the 4S.

For what it's worth, I think this new phone is going to be great. I love the look of the back case, love the design of the bottom of the phone and the movement of the headphone jack, and like the increase in screen size.

Bring on the 12th and the que outside the apple store a week later!!

Thats exactly why Apple is purposely leaking these designs and they are fakes. To get people off their scent and then they will unveil a totally new iPhone...
I freakin hope so brutha!

----------

I just can't believe they didn't go for something like this...

Now this is a screen size that I think is a perfect solution, not too big not too small, even just a hair smaller like 4.3" would be alright but not this stretched out garbage were getting.

I agree 100%

I hate the name iPhone 5 because I'm so critical about product numbering. So many people I know call it that and it drives me crazy. Oh well...I'm still trying to decide if I will switch to the iPhone 6 or stay with my Lumia 900:D

Since you're so critical about product numbering. You don't think it's strange to own a Lumia 900 since we didn't see anything prior to Lumia 600? Where the hell is Lumia 100 to 500? They should be exist before .. it drives me crazy

/Consistency, please.

You mean "The new iPhone" or "iPhone 6". The 5th one came out last year.

Let's quote this post here for fun, and wait until the actual new iPhone launch. Would like to see what would you say if you turned out wrong. Dark.Prophet?

Why else? What would you expect him to say when he was asked about leaks? The genius was getting us to fall in love with their products, and love them to the point where we never question anything they do.

This is why so many were concerned when Steve died. Everyone knew that was the end of Apple ever being creative again

----------

I love Apple as much as the next fanboy, and I do plan on buying the new phone. But I had to laugh when I saw that we're measuring the holes of the casing now.

Really? It's come down to that? This isn't a new foreign species that we have to document every millimeter of. It's a larger phone, larger screen, and you get one more row for icons on the home screen. That's the news in a nutshell.

Having said that, I'm not sure why people keep complaining that Apple needs to do something "different" with the design of the phone. Why mess with perfection? The phone is thin and elegant with no wasted space. It only takes up the amount of material that is necessary to house the components, and nothing more. That's how it should be. There is no fancy beveling or textures like on other phones. No excessively rounded edges.

A smartphone should focus on the content on screen and the exterior should fade into the background. Apple has mastered that. So I don't know what else people expect. Shooting rainbows and unicorns?[/QUOT

Why is it so much to ask for Apple to do more? Cell phones have becaome a very important part of our lives. We touch our cell phones more than anything else we own. You will leave your home or office and forget your keys but never your phone. Your phone is the first thing you check before you go anywhere.

I think we should love our phones, every part of it. We spend hundreds of dollars to buy a phone then 1 to 2 hundred more in accessories, then we spend $100 or more a month for our families to use the phones and we do it year after year so excuse me if i want more from my favorite company. Your car company, your favorite show, and even your favorite sport team make changes every year to try and get better because they know if they don't they will lose business

I don't like the iPhone 4 design. The "glass brick" feels incredibly anti-ergonomic with the hard edges that don't follow the shape of a hand, plus the glass is way too fragile. I'm happy with my iPhone 3GS.

Now, why would I upgrade from my 3GS to a 4S?

  • Faster? Sure, but the slightly extra speed doesn't matter that much.
  • Better camera? Sure, but the slightly extra resolution doesn't make much of a difference.
  • Thinner? A few milimeters don't make any real difference when protecting the phone in a case.

The advantages of a new model are the new design (and the iPhone 4 design is IMO ugly, as mentioned above) and the new features it brings. So let's see:

  • Siri? Doesn't work in my country, so no.
  • Camera flash? The only useful thing.
  • Retina display? The iPhone screen is too small to read long documents, and for smaller ones the old display is fine.

Hence, 3GS it is. What does the iPhone 5 add?

Bigger screen, but it doesn't really improve readability. A small text on the portrait orientation will continue to be small, since it's limited by width. A small text on the landscape mode could have bigger letters, but it would require people to scroll more often since less text would fit in the screen. Writing, meanwhile, would continue to be as bad as it is today, since a large part of the screen on landscape mode would still be taken by the keyboard.

Slightly faster. Slightly better camera. Slightly thinner. Those are simply incremental additions, they are not new features, much less unexpected ones. Other than eventually keeping the same thickness, I'm sure what would be the the iPhone 6 will also be slightly faster and have a slightly better camera, the so-called iPhone 7 will also be slightly faster and have a slightly better camera, and so on.

The design is the only thing I'm in doubt about. At least the back won't be glass anymore, which is great, but it appears Apple will keep the same kind of hard edge the iPhone 4 has.

It's disappointing. I would rather keep the 3GS display size, or go with a truly bigger screen. It feels like Apple is just doing a half-assed change that doesn't really improve the phone just so they can claim the iPhone also has a 4 inches display.

Siri and LTE both DO work in my country, and the different screen size and aspect ratio could make it more useful in some situations.

If you can't justify upgrading from the 3GS based on your needs, then don't upgrade. Seriously, you'd be dumb to waste the money on something that won't improve your user experience.

But I will upgrade from my 2+ year-old iPhone 4. I'm looking forward to using Siri, and the faster processors, and LTE, and possibly NFC, plus the full functionality of iOS 6.

I expect there will be high demand for the next iPhone no matter what. Maybe higher than Apple can supply at first. I hope those who have doubts hold off and let those of us who are ready get ours first.
