So let's get this straight: Innovation is:

4G like every other phone out there now?
NFC, like every other phone out there now?

There's nothing wrong with liking a small screen. There's something wrong with saying Apple can hold out because giving us a better product that we want is stupid.

Its like the people who criticize the iPad mini idea. I think Apple will release it. If you don't like it, stop commenting that its a bad idea. To be honest, I don't see the point in the product, but I'm simply not buying it. Don't like an iPhone with a larger display? Stick to a 4S. If you want one with a larger display that's not available? Buy an iPhone. Easy solution.

A big, high res screen will bring out the innovations in the phone though. But by this point I can't think of ANY innovation Apple's doing, at least, not since the iPhone 3G.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make or, in fact, what it is I've said you're responding to. I'm not saying what people should or shouldn't want. How should I know what anyone else wants?

I don't like the iPhone 4 design. The "glass brick" feels incredibly anti-ergonomic with the hard edges that don't follow the shape of a hand, plus the glass is way too fragile. I'm happy with my iPhone 3GS.

Now, why would I upgrade from my 3GS to a 4S?

  • Faster? Sure, but the slightly extra speed doesn't matter that much.
  • Better camera? Sure, but the slightly extra resolution doesn't make much of a difference.
  • Thinner? A few milimeters don't make any real difference when protecting the phone in a case.

The advantages of a new model are the new design (and the iPhone 4 design is IMO ugly, as mentioned above) and the new features it brings. So let's see:

  • Siri? Doesn't work in my country, so no.
  • Camera flash? The only useful thing.
  • Retina display? The iPhone screen is too small to read long documents, and for smaller ones the old display is fine.

Hence, 3GS it is. What does the iPhone 5 add?

.

Posts like this can easily make any product sound like a non upgrade. The retina display is of no real value over what's on the 3GS? I mean really?

I think the point is that no one NEEDS these newer handsets. When you really think about it, they have advantages but nothing you can't live without. But then that's true of almost ANYTHING!!!

I mean, who NEEDS a blu ray player? Who NEEDS a new suit? Who NEEDS a microwave? Beyond basic shelter, food, water and human companionship EVERYTHING else is a incremental upgrade.

4" is still to small for me.

Apple needs at least two models to satisfy all: 4" and 4.8".

Otherwise I am getting Galaxy SIII

Some final thoughts on the finger condom:

:D

Is the guy afraid to touch Plastic?
What is with the condoms on his fingers?
Unsurprisingly, yet another MR commenter who knows nothing about consumer electronics production.

They're called finger cots and they are widely used in electronics manufacturing and other clean room situations.

They prevent contamination between the person (your body naturally produces oils, etc.) and the object. It also prevents fingerprints and smudges.

Using finger cots instead of full-length gloves allows the person's hands to breath normally. Your hands will sweat in nitrile or latex gloves and very quickly will become uncomfortable. Also, your hands have more mobility with finger cots versus full gloves.

They have the same design for 3 years now. They can definitely improve, if they don't it only means they're lazy:rolleyes:

It's only been two years, the iP4 was released in June 2010. If you're incorrect on such simple math, I can't say that I'm all to confident in the rest of your opinions. :)

Comments like these that assume so many things make me want to take a snapshot and post it later if it's disproved. And I did :)

Oh I am glad, I haven't assumed anything bar FACTS. Which are that NO ONE can state this is a genuine Apple part, Apple go nuts when genuine parts are shown, they went nuclear at Gizmodo for the iPhone 4 leak. Apple have not shown or stated anything about the next iPhone, apart from iOS 6.

We have no idea what's going to be on the inside yet.

True, but i don't need faster processor or more ram. Where i live Siri is useless, so will be LTE, NFC and the new navi. I would like a slightly bigger screen... but not just lenght wise :(

So... What is it that you want besides a bigger screen? If all you care about is screen size, Samsung would LOVE to sell you a Note. Everything is a tradeoff - If you like iOS, you take what Apple offers. If you value large screen size over user experience, then your only option is Android.

I don't need a bigger screen (def not the one Apple is probably going to make), slightly bigger would be nice but i CAN live with the 3.5 one. I'll stick with iOS and upgrade to 4s, it will easily last me another 2 years ;)

No.

It they cared so much about generations it would have been the following:

1st: iPhone
2nd: iPhone 2
3rd: iPhone 3
4th: iPhone 4
5th: iPhone 5
6th: ?????

You failed to comprehend the argument at hand. It wasn't Apple's flakiness at departing from naming phones by the technology or number.

It was to demonstrate that going by past trends, their only options to name the phone would be:

iPhone LTE (going by cellular technology)
iPhone 6 (going by generation number)
The new iPhone (going by recent 'iPad 3' naming scheme)

iPhone LTE sounds pathetic because LTE technology has been around on competitors phones for quite some time. iPhone 6 sounds unprofessional as going by number count at that high of a quantity sounds silly. I still think they'll stick with "The new iPhone."

Pretty soon it will start sounding like UFC events. iPhone 22

Apple does not name their mobile devices based on version number. "3G", "3GS", "4", and "4S" are all examples. And whether or not they originally intended to, I cannot see them naming the next iPhone the "iPhone 6".

iPhone 4. The 4th iPhone. And again, they do use generations, it's evident on their iPad and iPod pages for the refurb store.

iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 (GSM), iPhone 4 (CDMA), iPhone 4 (White), iPhone 4S. So the 4S is the 7th iPhone if you want to be strict.

No, you can't split up the iPhone 4 in 3 different generations. It was the same phone (especially the white one...). Sorry, that's just the most ridiculous way to number them I've seen.

It's the new "iPhone". Plain, jane, iPhone. Same for the iPad. It's just iPad. It just happens to be new. Like the MacBook in 2010, it was the new "MacBook Air".

I think this is the first time I have completely agreed with you on something. :p

I think you may be selling the differences between the 3GS/4S a little short.

Plus you are forgetting this will be the third phone "slightly upgraded" from the 3GS and the change is getting pretty big bounce when skipping a generation (let alone 3GS to "5").

Yes, with a big enough generation gap the difference is going to be very noticeable. But the increment itself is slow and gradual, just improving an existing feature instead of adding new ones. IMO, this isn't the kind of thing that really adds to a product, not as much as actually being capable of doing new things with it.

Let's put it this way: I'm sure your current computer is much, much faster than a 386 PC from more than a decade ago, plus it has a very larger memory. However, if you were using the same softwares from way back then, only in your new computer, would it be as exciting as it truly is?
