First, I think there is nothing wrong with the way the Ultra looks for its intended market. Rugged sport watches should look like this. And they pretty much all do. The things I dislike about the Ultra have practical reasons for being. I used to wear a humongous Garmin sport watch for running.

BUT…I was never wanting to wear my Garmin to work or out on a date. And I don’t think I’ll ever want to wear this Ultra whenever I’m dressing up either.

There are 5 things I hate about the design when I consider wearing it as a normal everyday watch. The ”tallness”, the hunchback which is the crown guard, the holes everywhere, the orange button, and the finish which looked like Starlight aluminum. There is nothing that can be done about the first 3 but the last 2 are solvable.

I got out my trusty Dremel this morning and forever rid the watch of that nasty orange on the action button. Then I proceeded to give the watch a brushed finish like my old Series 5 Edition has. It may not be to everyone’s liking, but I gotta say, I’m really liking my Ultra more after this.

I still won’t ever wear it with a suit, but I’m more likely now to use it when going out and about in town in jeans.

Crikey!

That actually looks great. Best part is that any scratches you pick up you can soon get it back to the brushed finish. `something that is pretty much impossible with the current blasted finish.

I'd like to know what tip on the Dremmel you used. I'm not thinking for now, but it's certainly something I may consider if it collects a lot of marks.

Damn is the Ultra ugly. My god. I just vomitted in Tim Cook’s mouth.

Why would you not wear with a suit? Are you that worried about what others might think about you?
It’s not about what others think. The problem is that I think it’s ugly. When I’m sitting in a chair and I see the watch, it’s an assault to my eyes.

And the tallness of the watch will make my shirts stick above the watch. Yeah, there are pictures of long sleeves over the watch. But as soon as you swing your arms when you walk, it’s gonna get stuck above the watch again.

You obviously have some expertise here. I like the results, but would never be able to reproduce even if I wanted to, so I’ll have to enjoy the orange button and … pitted? finish 😉

As far as whether the ultra will catch on long sleeves, I actually hate that about all watches. No matter the depth of the watch, they always interact with a cuff in some noticeable way throughout the day. Annoyance! When will they be tattoo-thin!

Sorry but I can not imagine, but respect that all people and their likes and dislikes are different.

Looks much better but I hope the watch doesn’t develop any faults in the next year or you’ll just have to bin it!

I used the coarser of the 2 in the pic below.

"...that's some bold action Cotton...!"
It does look nice without the orange colour. After all, colour or not, its not like we could miss the button when trying to use it :)

That looks really good! Did you also Dremel out the ring on the crown?

Tempted to do the same with the action button, but am hoping that someone comes out with a ”skin” that you can put over it, which would be less permanent.

Was also thinking about trying a paint pen to paint the action button black, but I think what you did looks better.

I think you did an amazing job. That is a significant improvement over the stock watch.

Did the same thing with an iPhone 11 Pro once. I didn’t like the shininess and gave it a mat finish with 2000 grid sand paper. It was very very nice.
