Yes, I agree it goes both ways. :) The truth is, I don't know all the facts, and neither do you. Don't be silly...Obviously if they admitted this was true I would stand corrected. We shall see how this all pans out. It will be interesting to know the truth. So far it seems logical to assume I'm right. :) I'm sure you feel the same way. :)

This article just adds to a theory I had prior to it that Sprint and possibly other networks throttle the iPhone based on observations made by different people I know. We don't need an official statement from the networks admitting that they do practice that to come to the conclusion that they do. :)

I guess when people start using Android phones just as much as iPhones for web traffic you'll have NO problems with only certain models UNANNOUNCED by carriers being secretly speed crippled? Give me a break.

It has nothing to do with what I have a problem with.

The fact is that no one should be surprised that the carriers have complete control over when, where, and how their data gets to you.

I've made no statement as to what I think SHOULD happen. I'm merely saying that people's shocked surprise over this news is a bit far-fetched. The carriers control it totally. Who didn't see that coming?

Where are people finding the carrier file hack on iTweakiOS??? I can't find it anywhere. Created an account to be certain as well.

Update: NM, found it under the "News" section. You'd think they'd list it under "Downloads".

Here's the test you can try:

1. Stand within fairly close distance to a known cellphone tower.
2. Run Speedtest on your cellphone.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S III (Android 4.1.2 "Jelly Bean" with current version of TouchWiz "skin") and I've seen as high as 23 megabits per second down/8 megabits per second up running Speedtest this way--and this on a phone with no LTE support on the T-Mobile USA network.

Let's see what happens if you test an iPhone 5 with Speedtest this way. If it's limited to 10-14 megabits per second download speed, then either iOS or the cellphone carrier is deliberately "throttling" the data transfer rate.

Just a reminder using the speedtest app. The creator of the app states in the app that it is not very accurate with ios devices.

Do most people who think they are Being throttled have verizon?

No. I think most are with AT&T

Got these speeds a few weeks ago while visiting Boston. Server defaulted to New York because that's what it was set on.

I get 55 to 60 Mbs download and 10 Mbs upload on cable.

How is everyone getting such great bandwidth after the carrier replacement? Everything worked fine; have a JB'en iPhone 5 iOS 6.1.2, ran the terminal command, alt/option clicked update, selected the file, rebooted iPhone, turned off WiFi, reset network, ran test. The fastest was ~4-5 Mbps DL and 1-2 Mbps UL.

That can't be right.

Really makes a difference.

This tweak does make a difference.

Fido network in Canada. Two tests taken at the exact same spot.

All I really want is a hack to give me the true Unlimited Data I have been paying for.

Loyal customer for AT&T 7 years and they threaten to throttle my speed if I go over 3 gigs ???

THEY SELL 10 GIG PLANS ????

BS I'm going over the top 2% or whatever crap they are trying to say.

And you know what ! It doesn't matter, Unlimited actually means something and can be looked up in the dictionary.

Throttling me is a limit.

I hope everyone in the corporate office at AT&T gets cancer from their cell towers

Those were my speeds via my home wifi, not Verizon.

Same thing happened to me Fall '11 - Fed '12. Been a customer since before AT&T's take over of Cingular. I never went over 2 or 3 GB cellular data per month on my unlimited plan, yet I was throttled every month from Oct '11 on. I phoned customer support, and was told different markets have different towers/speeds blah blah blah. I [politely] informed the rep I once worked for Apple corp and in communications/IT, thus familiar with mobile tech/infrastructures. I phoned monthly as I was told it shouldn't happen again, only to hear the same rhetoric. The last rep I spoke with slipped up and made mention of a "program" that will end soon. I asked her what program she was referring to, she simply went back to their talking points.

After spending 3 hours at an AT&T store on Market St in San Francisco, none of the store reps knew why I was being throttled. The store rep noticed odd notations on my account, no one could figure it out. He phoned AT&T and waited for assistance, after 30 minutes I walked out, entered the Verizon store across the way and signed a new contract. I sent back a copy of my cancellation notice from AT&T, thanking them for introducing me to other carriers. :)

Crazy jealous. I'm getting 0.9 Mbps download and 0.13 upload here on Sprint. I hate Sprint. a lot. Price I pay for being a poor medical student still on my parent's plan.

I had the opposite effect on my iPhone 4S. Wiped my phone and restored and it back to its puny 1.2 Mbps on ATT network.:(

the same game in Germany with Deutsche Telekom

Hello...
it's the same in Germany with Deutsche Telekom (T-Mobile Company in US).
Despite i have a Contract with 21 Mbit/s with a SpeedOption for an extra 12 Dollars/ Month for 5 GB full speed data, i never saw more then a bit under 8 Mbit/s at any day- or nighttime. And yes, in my region there is this fast kind of network available. Even the faster 42 Mbit's DC-HSPA+ network in enabled in my area. After buying the iPhone 5 i expected a higher speed than with the 4 or 4s but it wasn't...

the best WE can do is writing email to our providers or calling them.
They will have no answer and no fix but they will notice our requests.
And everyone should contact Apple too...
thats the best WE can do...
lets hope they will stop this throttling in one or two years.

have a nice day
Markus

Very good post. Throttling via code seems like a very lazy, unintelligent way of managing a network. It's like limiting the speed of a car during the manufacturing process instead of having speed limits. Wait, they already do that. Bad car analogy.

When you buy a car, somewhere in the brochure it will be mentioned that the car is "electronically limited to 155mph" or simply "top speed 155mph" even if it could theoretically go >200mph. They don't advertise the car as being faster than the arbitrary limits they impose.
