I had one of those pager watches. It was awesome. The time was accurate to 1/10,000th of a second because it was synced with an atomic clock. (or at least that is what they claimed) It was neat to put mine next to my friends and see the seconds ticking off in perfect unison. At the time I didn't even have a cell phone, though neither did most people. It even had news alerts that would come up on the watch. Although it didn't display text well. I still remember being informed of Princess Diana's death via the watch. It just read "Di Dies" because that was the best it could do with the lcd watch display. Anyway, I loved that watch, and thats probably why I bought a pebble. So far it's great, and the potential for it to get even better is there.

Great story. I'm glad I wasn't alone with owning one and loving it. :)

that finds the Pebble incredibly ugly?

I really don't care how it looks, though it looks fine to me. I'm a much more a "function over form" kind of guy. I really don't understand all these guys so obsessed with fashion and how they look in their skinny jeans. Dear god, can't men just me men again?

The Pebble = The Emperor's New Clothes.

There is potential for a wrist-worn device to be very useful and aesthetically pleasing. This seems like a rush-job to get a foothold. Nothing more than a hipster's dream.

It already looks like the watch equivalent of this:

Those were great phones when they came out, just like the pebble is a great smart watch.

The public's expectations have changed since the 80's. People were in awe at a "mobile" telephone, or a radio or calculator in a watch.

Now any kid proficient in photoshop can produce a mockup device reflecting where they see as the future. The Pebble is a clunky lump of plastic encasing some interesting ideas. It's the CRT TV to the flatscreen watch that will inevitably follow.

I actually hope Pebble make an impact in this market, but they're not going to do it with that watch. Whoever does make it will be manufacturing something like what the hypothetical kid envisaged in PS.
