Timmy just hasn't found a way to turn it into a service yet. That's all.
You want them prescription to see? A monthly charge or they just don’t magnify. You want them to tint outside for sunglasses? A monthly charge or they just stay clear all the time. You want to have them on the internet out of the house? A built in nano sim to access the internet at a monthly charge. You want to break them at sports or sit on them by accident like regular glasses? Well we have an apple care+ subscription to sell you too.

I basically could be the Apple CFO right now with all my hot revenue generating ideas. Follow me for more recipes.

Most of Apple's AR/VR group is working on the mixed reality headsets that Apple is planning to produce, but there are still some that are exploring technology for future AR glasses.

So which is it?? After saying that it's been postponed, it's said that Apple is still working on the AR glasses in exploring the technology!

At $US3,000.00 this is a non-starter from the get go. If someone thinks that "wider range of consumers" and this price point go together, they have lost touch with reality. Only when someone is able to make a headset that offers a good experience and costs $500 or less will this technology take off.
The issue I have with this product is the rumoured pricing $3-5000 which is the current estimate. At that price point you would want something that ‘fits into our daily lives’ as Tim puts it.

This product will never do that, I barely see anyone in the wild with AirPods Max, never mind a big visor on their face.

This will be one of those products that all the reviewers will say is absolutely amazing etc… no one will purchase and ultimately developers won’t bother developing for, because let’s be real, less than 5% of those in the Apple ecosystem are going to purchase this product at this price point, why would developers take the time and effort to create experiences when barely anyone is using it.

And for those that do buy it, they may take it out the drawer for a few hours now and again, but that’s all.

In my opinion, unless Apple seriously change the AR/VR game (similar to how they changed everyone’s idea of a smartphone when they launched the iPhone), this product line is going to go the exact same way as the HomePod and the TouchBar, over priced, under developed, and ultimately end in a failure.

I think what it means is that it’s likely been dropped to the bottom of the priority list… so maybe 1 or 2 people might be working on it or it’s been shelved for the time being.

Ultimately though whatever development they do on the headset over the next 10 years goes hand in hand with development for the glasses.

At least we have Science Fiction like AI with ChatGPT! That is a moonshot project that is showing great success! DALL-E 2, Stable Diffusion, and Midjourney are not that that bad either!
In addition, we got the James Webb Space Telescope, SpaceX's resounding success with their Falcon and soon-to-be-Starship rockets, and the Tesla EV cars that have motivated major car manufacturers to pivot to EVs, just as Musk intended. So yeah, some moonshots have succeeded, while some much-hyped projects have failed.

I guess there are still some things to be hopeful for.

Problem is, we just don’t know anything. At all. What actual useful information have we gleaned from these silly articles? They’re working on a headset and it might be expensive. Ok. What’s the vision here? What are we gonna use this for? What’s the killer app? Like…just why?

I know augmented reality as a concept can have real world applications. Just look at all the sci-fi we’ve watched over the years with holographic displays and control panels. But how big is it, what’s the usage like. I say again. What do they expect us to actually do with it?

will it replace the need for screens? Like i can put it on and have a pinned 80 inch tv screen in my field of view so i wont even need to buy one? Will it replace computer monitors so i could just take a mac mini with me and have dual displays anywhere? Even in a motel room? Will there be an entirely new interface for things where i can use touch gestures to control the interface?

Perhaps they’ll be testing the waters with the headset and don’t want to invest all of their R&D on hopes and nightmares like Meta.

Also, I remember hearing about an Apple iPod phone mix for YEARS before it actually was released. So while we have also been hearing about some of these other Apple projects for a while, I also wouldn't have wanted them to give up on the iPhone because the tech wasn't available yet. So I am still crossing my fingers that we will get some really cool stuff, just maybe not as soon as we want it, lol

Don't forget Facebook and Zuckerberg's Metaverse. That's a game-changer for humanity and very clearly something Apple is aspiring towards. One of the biggest moonshots of our lifetimes.

I think maybe I’m having a bad week…

But someone please explain WTF a AR/VR headset is good for in the consumer market?

Thanks for that video! I get it now! Yes, that must be really hard to implement!

AR Glasses are obviously wayyy better than a weighted mixed reality headset. But makes sense as current technology is just not there yet to make it possible. It will be placed on the shelf just as how Steve Jobs placed the iPad on the shelf and maybe will be looked at once again when technology has evolved. 👁️ But for me, I already wear glasses and AR glasses would be really cool.

They may have realized it will be more compelling to start high-end, and gradually (say over a decade) downsize the physical device. Vs trying to parallel-track a more comprehensive XR headset, and a lightweight "Google Glass" type thing.

Terrible if true. They shelf development of the product that has such huge potential but decide to release a product that’s bound to be a dud. Other than for gaming, what’s the use of a VR headset? It’s not like anyone would want to wear one in public! Or even at home for any prolonged period of time.

Apple needs a large market for its products to be successful. There is no large market for VR - at least not a large market by Apple standards.

AR glasses would have infinite uses. I don’t understand why they’d be so technically challenging for Apple. Why would they be fixated on putting so much technology into the glasses themselves instead of just relying on the iPhone to do all the heavy lifting? Just put enough into them to render images sent to it and capture sensor data to send back to the phone - that should keep the weight and needed battery down.

First, it's the Apple Car project, project Titan. Now, it's the Apple's Glasses project.

Apple is not so special of a company anymore. Steve Jobs might've been the visionary who transformed Apple into that special company. Now, Apple is possibly turning back into just one of the normal tech conglomerates we all know. It happens, folks. We could possibly be witnessing an end of a very special and historic era in the tech industry.

Apple car with no wheels, Apple glasses to replace our phone are wonderful ideas that I have been reading in sci fi books for decades and slowly the dreams becomes reality but not now as technology is not available and the genius of Steve Jobs was to produce products today with no vanity that truely changed the world today rather than tomorrow or one day …

Lots of companies don't make cars or glasses. While I would have liked to see what Apple could come up with... I'm not that upset at Apple.

At least Apple still makes phones. LG couldn't handle it and they exited the phone market.

In fact... LG doesn't make cars, glasses, or phones... what losers!

:p

Lolololol

Why bring to market ARgh glasses or VR googles when you’re making billions upon billions of dollars off of the same old thing?

At this particular moment in time, there is absolutely no pressing reason to push a new product category — whether it be AR, VR, a car, or even a charging mat — when you are already a raging cash machine. You have people willing to fork over serious cash just for an updated connector standard or enhanced battery life or a new colourway.

Expect more updates with colour matching power cables. We passed PCEE (Peak Consumer Electronics Euphoria) with the announcements of the iPod and the iPhone.
