I notice no speed difference. For me the battery life is leaps and bounds better than my 5. Not having to charge, not even once during the day is something I have no been able to do on my 5 as long as I can remember. Touch ID is impressive and will be a game changer once its available for more things.

Love my 5s.

I got rid of the 5 for the 5s for the following reasons:

-I was able to sell the 5 for $500 and buy the 5s for $300 (both 32gb)

-My 5 had poor video playback over wifi all the time and rove me nuts. The 5s plays everything flawlessly so far. My ipad mini sucked for video over wifi also, so I got rid of that too.

-Even though I was careful, the slate iphone was finish was wearing off in spots. The new space gray seems like it would be more durable.

That's my story

I went from a 5 to a 5s as well, and can tell the difference mostly in the camera and switching between apps. I mean, the 5 wasn't a slug by any means, but I think we'll see more apps taking advantage of the technology inside the 5s over the next few months, so the difference should be even more noticeable then.
My main reason for upgrading was Touch ID and camera.

For those who say the battery life is better on the 5s than the 5 then I would expect this to be the case since it is a brand new battery going through the conditioning process as opposed to batteries on some 5's which may be up to 1 year old by now.

Well....it does have a larger battery than it's predecessor. Apple's claims of a 10-12% increase seem to fall in line with respected review sites that have run the comparisons (in contrast to the '5' when it was initially released...those numbers aren't reflective of a 'year old' '5' they they decided to bench with the new 5s's launch)--and several folks in this thread have responded (as current 5s owners and past owners of the 5) they're noticing as good or better in most situations...battery life over the course of their day. We all remember the original 5's situation....as it's only been a year since release. How long we could 'get' through an average workday is typically something we remember..and if it's not up to par, we augment the phone with a Mophie or another type of battery case...and/or keep the charger on hand
I find it interesting that most ARE getting better battery longevity. I'm in the same camp and bought the Mophie for my original '5'. Typically the first week or three, we spend more time playing with the new phone, setting it up and sync'ing, testing and loading up games just for the sake of it being 'new'

Most reviews I've read that have compared the battery life are coming to the same conclusion most in this thread are. It is a bit longer life in comparison. And perhaps just enough of a boost to get even the most heavy of users (not gamers here....I, talking productivity, calendars and alarms, appointments, calls, texts and music/movie/media consumption----games are a completely different story depending on its complexity)....make it through the typical 8-10 hour workday with another 15-25% to spare...my cent n a half anyway

I should also make clear....as happy as I am with the 5s, I'm fortunate to have a wife on the opposite yearly contract setup....she enjoys my hand me downs as they're still in great shape, typically have a nice case and are filled with the apps she may have never thought of using. I also run a business and outfit 7 of my employees with iPhones so the newest option is never an 'early' upgrade for me. I only update with the option under complete subsidy
That said...if I was NOT in this situation, regardless of my passion for technology, I would NOT have upgraded from the 5--->5s.
In response to the OP:)
....feel we got off track a bit, but then again, the OP was interested as to 'why' we chose to upgrade

Ha ha..that's how the wife and I do it. We have 2 kids who are on opposite contract year so they get our hand me downs and when the move is right, we buy the next phone subsidized. We also agree that unsubsidized, it's a different conversation.

No I didn't. There's no substantial benefit in giving the already fat & happy Apple Inc. more money simply because they're working overtime to convince their worshipers a fingerprint reader, a slightly faster chip, and a super animated OS is something revolutionary.

Yet that said, Apples penchant for the "Toy Story" like animation within iOS does make it appealing to four year old little girls like my daughter & her friends. By starting them young Apple will insure the brand loyal they seek will continue.

I went from iPhone 5 64gb to iPhone 5s 64gb. Why you ask? Because out of all the devices I own, the phone is one I use constantly! I feel its not a waste of money if you use it all the time. That's one of the reasons I upgrade to the newest iPhone.

I have the 5, and am going to the 5S, and was wondering if there was a noticeable different in terms of phone speed (excluding data speed), battery life, and the camera? I know almost everything else remained the same (minus the FP scanner of course).

I know a couple people who have. What I'm curious about is if anyone went from the 5 to the 5C... :D

What's better about the panoramic camera mode? I upgraded from the 5 to 5S but only because I was finally getting my daughter a phone and I wasn't going to let her have a newer phone then myself. Finally set it up today, and it is faster, but only during certain program loads and animations. I have not been able to test the low-light abilities of the camera but I did try the panoramic setting and it still makes crazy distorted pictures as the 5. I hate the commercials from last year showing a panoramic picture of all of those kids at the party and they are all totally straight with no distortion. Total BS.

Crazy distorted pictures? Um, I believe the phrase is "you're doing it wrong". Now yes depending on the proximity of your subject you might see such things as a curved horizon but that's about it.

When I spoke in my post about the improved panoramic mode what I was specifically referring to was the ability of the phone to now do varying exposure throughout the panorama rather than fixed exposure like on the iPhone 5 (this is not an OS feature - it's a hardware feature - as I tried it after upgrading my 5 to iOS7 and it didn't work any different than before).

I really haven't noticed a difference from my 5 to 5s but I think within the next year as developers create apps to take advantage of the A7 the difference will then be felt.

I guess I'm not alone:) Kids are always one year behind but they are just stoked to have iPhones. One in 5th and 7th grade.

Are you really asking if anyone went from the 5 to the 5S:eek:

I guess I am one of them and as I had put iOS 7 on my 5 before I got my 5S. Little difference in perfomance or battery life, all is good.

If you are looking for a BIG BANG in technology advancement, that is not going to happen with the 5S.

Your all forgetting the best part of going from 5-5s!!! The sight of the ring around the home button for bragging rights, and the color gold! That is if you don't use a case, which 99% do, so really unless u picked the black, the ring is your only reason to upgrade from the 5.

I went from 4-4s-5-5c-5s

In a year!!!! Sure the ip6 will b out, so your saying there's no performance advantage at all

I have 3 kids (11, 13, 15 years old) and they all have 4S's. I must be an Apple addict because I wish I could give them all 5C's - I would be more excited than them though. They'd be stuck without them but they don't care greatly for the absolute latest (now if iOS 7 hadn't been available for the 4S it would be a different story).

Oh please. I had a 5 and now a 5S. "Tons faster", (forgetting that tons is the worst possible word you could use to connote speed) is a blatant exaggeration at best. Snappier, smoother, yes, but "tons faster" it is not.

And battery life is "amazing"? Did you actually turn it on? Half of what I've read says it's somewhat worse than the 5, and the other half says it's slightly better. You are the first and only "amazing" on the entire internet.

Sounds like someone just got their phone today and is sooper eggcited.

Maybe your phone just sucks?

Upgrading from the 5. Did not plan to, but I have camera issues and the phone is not under warranty anymore. Would cost $270 to replace. So, I am selling my 5 and putting the $270 towards the 5S. Hopefully it arrives sometime in October!

Looking forward to the camera, m7 and touch ID.

Well....it does have a larger battery than it's predecessor. Apple's claims of a 10-12% increase seem to fall in line with respected review sites that have run the comparisons
One of my biggest problems with reviews is that they dont spend nearly enough time with the device to accurately rate a battery or give long term impressions. They do some rundown tests in a lab and then take it out for a day and suddenly their word becomes Bible.

Whether it's Android, Apple, Laptop, Tablet or whatever, what Ive always wanted is for these "well respected" sits to actually revisit their most popular reviews a few months down the road to see how it holds up after the hype slows and the product gets broken in. I'm sure the results and opinions would be very different.

I went from the 5 to 5S. Only major improvements I see is that the camera is better and the touch id is pretty handy. My battery life seems the same as my 5 for the most part. The overall speed seems about the same as my 5, but iOS 7 runs a bit smoother on it. Even with the minor differences, I don't regret the upgrade at all, I'm enjoying the phone!
