Try moving to the UK, when you'll know all about high gas/petrol prices. £1.42 a litre at the moment, which translates to approx £6.44 (or US$10) a gallon.

Welcome to rip-off Britain.
No offence but the Uk is the size of the State of Michigan or smaller than two counties in Alaska, With mostly poor public transportation in the USA.

Ah I remember when I first started driving and diesel cost me like 89p/litre

Now a full tank comes to nearly £80:eek:

Anyways, both the Apple Store and John Lewis near me both still had stock. Apple had a 20 strong queue outside, but John Lewis was empty.

I think it's a little too soon to decide whether or not the iPad (third generation) is selling well. Let's let the weekend pass and we can talk about it afterwards. Not everyone can take a day off work to sit at home and wait for a package, or stand in a line.

Did any place sold out? Yes, it did. It's called online store. The biggest apple store in the world.

It's on back order for 2-3 weeks. Demand is high.

I'm not sure what I believe less--anything Apple says, or Soviet propaganda from the cold war era. ;)

Well, you do understand Apple is a publicly listing company and any sales or financial information they give has to be accurate lest the SEC come down on them like a pile of old Gateway Computers. That plus Apple has a $100b war chest right now, so they sold a whole lot of something for it to be playing the accounting gimmick game. Usually companies that play games are cash poor and/or stock slumped. Apple is neither.

Also there are multiple unaffiliated analysts collecting and inspecting Apple sales data so it would be quite obvious if Apple was fibbing. It seems like your policy of "reserve the right to reject reality and substitute your own" is failing here.

Yet everything you see on TV is showing the masses queued up at the NYC store looking like they are waiting for the resurrection of Steve Jobs. Apple has the press wrapped around their fingers. The free publicity they get is astounding.

FWIW, I got one on a preorder but decided to check out all the non-hype in the area for the fun of it.

I used to work near one of the NJ stores and liked it for that very reason. Since generally you need a car to get to them, they are far less crowded. That said, during the iPad 2 launch, they had lines around them, as well. The difference was the pre-orders this time around.

I think after the success of the iPhone 4S launch in October, which would have been even better had Apple had more phones to sell (37 million apparently wasn't enough to fill demand), Tim Cook didn't want to be caught out again and ramped up production of the new iPad in January, waiting until there was sufficient supply to roll it out worldwide. It seems to have worked. There is plenty of stock, but at the same time the expectation is that they sold a lot. Look at all the stories yesterday about FedEx and UPS drivers saying they spent their entire day delivering iPads, and how a lot of deliveries were delayed until later in the day.

Are you kidding? I live in Central London and the public transport is great;). I still have a car but given the price of filling the tank(£100 or $158 approx.) I tend to walk most places or get the tube/bus.

With taxes the iPad is a lot more expensive in the UK too so it looks to me as though people have decided to stick with their iPad 2s rather than stay on the annual upgrade treadmill.

Meanwhile, I love my black 64GB wifi 3rd gen. The screen is sensational and I'm very happy to be able to stream/mirror from it to my new Apple TV. I don't know how anyone who claims to be interested in tech could resist buying one tbh;).
