They’ll notice they hadn’t billed you when all this madness from the launch dies down, then they will. However you should do what is right and contact them. Perhaps in the end you would be rewarded with something for honesty, you never know.

Yeah they'll notice. No realistic scenario where the exact inventory and sales numbers are not accounted for. Probably the sort of thing they already have measures to check for when people attempt chargebacks for example.

The only victim of this would be the staff member who didn’t book it out correctly when they might investigate it after a stock check.

if you contact Apple CS they’ll probably give you something for your honesty.

This happened to me when the iPhone X came out, I made an order but then cancelled it, device still turned up and I was told I could just keep it 🤷

Speaking from experience as this happened to me with an iPhone, they absolutely wilt not contact OP nor ask them to pay. Once an item is cancelled it can’t be rung up again and they will just tell him to keep it. Same exact thing happened to me and the store couldn’t do anything.

I suspect these things are tracked somehow and that ultimately this will be traced back to you for payment and hopefully prosecution or somehow disabled and/or black listed in the same manner that the merchandise that was stolen by looters was disabled.
Nope. That doesn’t happen.

Some people would think yey free product but if it were me I'd be too anxious and I'd rather be honest and let Apple know. Not necessarily because they are losing out (I really couldn't care less about that) but I'd want to get it sorted out for my own peace of mind and plus knowing that a staff member at the store is probably going to get into trouble for the mistake.

Best let Apple know and keep yourself right...and maybe help the retail worker out a bit in this situation.

Just take it, honestly... You only get so many slip-ups like this from Apple.

Think of the effects of your choice in advance, for example:

Keeping the thing means you get to save nearly $4,000 on a device you wanted. That's a win.
Reporting (and then returning) the thing means you don't get anything at all. That's a loss.
