It really isn't a hassle dealing with cc extended warranty. Used Amex for all my Apple purchases and they credit any charges made towards repairs/replacements within that extra year.

Either Applecare or Best Buy Service Warranty.

Applecare is $300 - covers 3 years (actually just gives two years extended).

Best Buy Accidental Protection $450 is 4 years and covers any physical damage or accidental coverage.
AppleCare is 3 years starting from the very day your Mac / iDevice is shipped, not when you register.

Oh and Best Buy sucks.

And if not, call AppleCare and they will send you a check prorated for the amount of coverage you had left. It's really easy and the check arrive within a few weeks. I do it whenever I sell an Apple product; I've found that most people in the cheapo-used market don't give a crap about AppleCare and are not willing to pay extra for it.

Thanks for that! I wasn't aware :)

Did not. I'll be trading up as soon as the Haswell RMBP ships. If less than a year original warranty still in place. If more than a year AMEX ext. warranty covers.

AFAIK, the cost to replace the battery is the same with or w/o AppleCare, if that was going to be a deciding factor for anyone.

When my GF's son's 2007 MBP had a battery failure after 2 years and only 76 cycles it was replaced under AppleCare for free, £75 saved.
In the case of a rMBP that would be £199 saved.

No, definitely didn't bother. In NZ at least, the consumer credit act means that manufacturers must repair products withing their easonable expected lifespan. Three years is usual for computers, so they have to repair or replace (at their option) whether you but extended warranty or not. They don't tell you this, of course...

MacBook Pro 15" with Apple Care. It's already on it's third logic board. Also, many other things are replaced (airport card, hdd flex cable etc).

It's well worth it. AND it offers peace of mind.

Also, when the logic board is replaced 3x and still dies, the 4th time I could ask for a replacement machine of similar (or better) specs.

It's well worth it.

Considering the fact that the rMBP is completely non-user friendly with expensive parts and a first-gen product, Apple Care is a must. I'd never ever buy it without it. Also, just buy it with the purchase of your Mac. Apple Care starts at the purchase date (so even if you buy it at day 364, you still have two years left of coverage).

My experience is that people tend to forget about it or don't want to think about it during the year. "The Mac works fine, why would I spend $300 all of a sudden?". This is wrong. And some of them see the light and feel the pain afterwards

I considered it, but opted not to at the last moment. Thankfully, I have a while where I can change my mind (and likely will).

Ah, good point!

I was thinking of the people who need their battery changed because it's worn out (i.e. high cycle). In that situation, AppleCare doesn't cover that, so it'd be $199 either way.

I used to work at Best Buy selling computers. The attachment rate for the accidental coverage on Mac laptops was nearly 100%. It kind of sold itself. I bought my 2011 MBP from Best Buy with the educational discount with their 2 year accidental coverage. It's a pretty good deal. I think it was around $350 for it then. It's been a year and a half and I've had no issues. I wonder if I'll even be able to use it. Lol

People who say Best Buy's service plans suck have no clue what they're talking about.

..... I live in Europe, and consumer rights are well covered legally here. So if there's anything wrong with the computer for the next five years, and they can't pin it on the consumer, then Apple is legally bound to fix it. .....

5 years? - I have never heard of that. I live in the UK and we do not have that kind of cover - the usual 1 year depending on product... though I thought it was the same across Europe.

The only negative I've heard about BB's service plans is that repairs sometimes take much longer than the Genius Bar.

Bill of Goods Act or something? I'm in the US, so I'm only familiar with it from what people have posted about it on MacRumors, but it sounds like a bit of a crap shoot when it comes to using it (again, from the posts I've read here).

BB won't last 4 more years. Apple Care is only $244 at B&H Photo. It is $122 if you buy the rMBP at the same time. No tax (outside NY) and free shipping.
