It looks like I can only sync things like iCal. It would be nice to Sync iTunes, iWeb etc but I don't see how to do that with .Mac. I have a .Mac account and admittedly I'm new to the Mac world, but I'm not sure how to make that happen.

BTMM might work, but I haven't read much about that yet.

There are third party programs to sync both itunes and folders between two computers. Do a search of the forum for them. Also I think one of them is called martian slingshot.

I say keep what you have, it is a great combination. The Macbook Pro was built for Designers that are the run 24/7. Like i said the Air and the iMac combo is the best for your needs i think.

I agree keep what you got and if you really need syncing then get .Mac
it works great.

I have .Mac, but I'm I guess I just don't know how to sync my music and photos from one machine to another.

The biggest driver for me to switch is the wifey. She hates when I go in to my Den to work on the iMac. If I had a MBP I could sit on the couch with her and edit pictures etc.

The way it is, my iMac is getting very little use. I have had it two weeks and spent less than 2 hours using it. I LOVE IT! But, I don't seem to be using it. The MBP seems like it would allow me the power I would like and the portability. It's 2 lbs heavier than my AIR, but I think it's worth it for the bigger screen.

switching question

so i have a similar situation, but it's all hypothetical right now (i haven't switched yet)

right now i have everything running on my windows desktop, which has been great to stream to my :apple:TV and my pictures all are on it through Picasa

i want a new iPhone (2.0), and I'm thinking about making the entire switch

my wife likes a portable setup (i.e. MBA or Macbook), but i really want a "home base" desktop at home for media streaming purposes.

I also want a 15" MBP for my portable workstation for audio stuff and pictures on the go.

what's the easiest way to start this new world?

I was in the same situation:
XP Desktop
Vista Laptop

Now I have:
XP Desktop (trashing soon)
Vista Laptop (Selling to make way for a Mac)
Mini (my entry point but selling to make way for different machine)
iMac
MBA
Apple TV

I thought having a main desktop machine was the best way to go too, but now I'm not sure. I'm leaning towards giving my MBA to the wifey and getting a MBP for me. The Pro would be our 'main machine' with all pics, music, videos etc and the MBA will be the travelling machine.

The Pro would still give me mobility around my house and out of the house if need be and I could set it up to a large display for long editing sessions. This way I can surf and edit anywhere in my house - which makes the wifey happy but I can also do editing sessions when I want to.

The tough thing is that I really like the iMac, but I'm hoping that the MBP with a 23 ACD will give me the same effect but will also be portable.

I'm not 100% sure what I'm gonna do just yet. I need to make a decision though because it keeps me up at night!

but what i'm out of town and my wife wants to listen to our shared iTunes library?

that's what i'm figuring

You could always setup screen sharing between the imac and the air. That way you can edit pics on the imac from the comfort of your couch.

You can dock the MBA and hook it up to the iMac (i think you can via ethernet) and just put what you want on at night. Setup a nice routine to dock your mba at night, I think that should be the best way to do things. Or like someone else suggested, you can screen share to drag-and-drop music or play music from one computer to another.. theres a program out there made for iPhones called iPhone Remote and you can stream music from your iMac to your mba.. try it out here: http://code.google.com/p/telekinesis/

I think you should stick with what you have, because it really is the ultimate setup, and you will always second guess yourself no matter what choice you make.. just be happy, because you have two amazing machines!

I'm horrible at making decisions! I ended up returning the iMac last night. If I miss it, I'll buy a new one when they get updated. Most likely I will end up with a new MBP.

Thanks all for the advice.
