R.I.P Jony ?? I heard he died from complications during Flat Stanley conversion surgery

I think the new MBPs look great, kinda retro looking and I much prefer the softer rounded corners over the weird angles of the last generation. I've seen other people say they look a little too much like a Microsoft device which I suppose is kinda fair.

weird angles? I’m sorry but what? I’m happy but I guess do you like the new design I mean sure why not I’m happy for you. Objectively I’d say it’s much worse it’s quite ugly. I don’t know if they look like Microsoft devices and I don’t care what I care about is it just horribly ugly I mean all my god that’s that just I don’t know why they had to do that I really don’t. MacBooks used to be really intelligently designed and right now they’re just ugly… I guess you can really see that I was not that much involved in the design anymore

oh it seems that this dictation totally got wrong some things I said “… Anyway I wanted to say I’m happy that you like it you know why wouldn’t I be happy for you that’s great but I really really don’t like it, and I think sort of objectively, it’s quite loudly ugly

Why are the new MacBooks so ugly?
Ugh, another one of these posts... Can we please just let it go, if you don't like it you don't have to buy it. That said...
Have you actually seen one in person? I can't speak for the 16" as the size has never really been to my liking even when it was "thin,"but I actually think the 14" looks really nice, and both machines look much better in person than some comparisons you might see online.
At least for the 14" I really don't think it's any less attractive than the 13" it replaces unless you're just super into thin. Plus the power and battery life they're able to pack in while still being a relatively slim and light laptop is absolutely insane...

I'll go ahead and say it, but I actually prefer the new macbook design way more than that of the old one. Everyone automatically says it's worse because it's "bulkier" but to me that is more aesthetically pleasing.

It's thinner than the PowerBook G4s and first MBPs.

Can you elaborate on what you don't like about them outside of "ugly"?

By weird angles I mean the previous generation felt analytical and overly modern: the transition from the flat sides to the top and bottom curved panels is immediate and literally very sharp. The radius of the bulging curves on the top and bottom panels were overly large, not flat enough to be considered 'flat' and not curved enough to be considered 'curved' if that makes sense. The design kinda looked like a rounded rectangle that had been extruded and then sandwiched between two awkward panels; so when the device is closed it looks like it's made of three distinct panels stacked on top of each other. On top of that the very flat keyboard didn't give off a very comfy vibe either because you could visually pick up on how little keyboard travel there was. The whole design language screamed 'this belongs in a cold, concrete and glass house with no color. we care more about looking cool than actually being cool via function'

old design: COLD, ANALYTICAL, SHARP, UNDECIDED, INORGANIC, UNBALANCED

The new design has zero sharp edges when closed -- this is the most important distinction that makes this new design feel organic, like it was designed by leaving a solid block of aluminium in a stream until the edges naturally softened over time or like someone took a block of wood and hand sanded the edges to make it feel 'right' in the hand before transferring that shape into solid metal. Like humans designed it by feel, not by CAD programs. It feels very comfortable to hold but solid. The top panel is decidedly flat but aggressively rounded off on the edges to remove any notion of aggression you felt from the sharp corners of the old design. It's retro, it really reminds me of the PowerBooks I grew up with, yet it's unmistakably modern and more advanced than those PowerBooks because of the unibody design; there are no unnecessary pieces of plastic, screws, panel gaps, or pieces of material. When it's closed it looks like a solid, singular unit just sitting there... Even the larger flat feet on this new design are a lot more pleasant to feel and look at. The keyboard keys have a lot more depth to them so before you type anything you can already tell there will be a lot more travel distance vs. the butterfly switches of old (again, it looks like the keyboard was designed for humans not for some flatness aesthetic). Speaking of which, I love the black anodized keyboard area because it consolidates the contrast of the keyboard by removing all the weird zig zagging of light metal inbetween individual black key caps from the old design. Now the constrast is clear: there is the single black keyboard unit and then there's the rest of the body. The old design looked like someone stuck individual keycaps into the laptop body and now I can't look at the old keyboard design without thinking it's ugly and unrefined. Additionally the contrast between the white glowing key symbols and the black surround looks so much nicer without any of the distraction from the old design. Even the Apple logo on the top panel looks so much more proportionally balanced -- no detail was missed on this one.

new design: ORGANIC, SOFT YET SOLID, RETRO ACHIEVED THROUGH MODERN MANUFACTURING METHODS, BALANCED, CONSOLIDATED/UNIFIED

Overall the new design is a big win in my book, probably aided by certain visual elements (chiefly the roundness) that remind me of the laptops I used as a kid. If this is what post-Ive design looks like then count me in. Although I feel like this was still Ive influenced because it feels like it has the same visual language from the Mac Pro.

And that's if we're just talking about industrial design/aesthetics alone. The internals and design direction of optimizing for performance (thicker body for example) are the stars of the show, the improved external design is just the cherry on top for me. Apple going thicker and optimizing for more interior space by reducing the radius of the curves kinda plays a psychological trick on you because you end up thinking "this thing is here to do work, not just to look good sitting on a desk"

They spent five years making laptops to please people like you who cared what it looked like, and look where that got them.

Huge swathes of disenchanted creators with ancient Macbooks they have been holding onto for dear life (like me) are singing the joyful song of their people once again. You are a lone voice in the wilderness and literally no one cares about your negativity.

Based, poetic, and beautiful. Everything about this laptop screams "Apple's taking laptops seriously again"

Ugly how? Like it looks like a laptop? :D Actually elaborating how it looks ugly imo can be more useful than just saying "it's ugly."
Ugly as in not Aesthetically pleasing. The old MacBook Pro design is actually a much much better design. I’m not sure what you do for work but from your answer I’m going to assume that you’re not in any profession that has to do with aesthetics... It’s it could be hard to explain what’s beautiful to somebody who’s not really dealing with beauty on a day-to-day basis... And I guess I’m not really here to argue about it, I’m sure you would find some reasons why you actually liked new design so I feel that your question is not really a sincere question with more like her trap type of question … I could Of course go in and elaborate why find it to be ugly there’s quite a few reasons for it. But I also feel that anybody should be able to do that, and if you find yourself not being able to do this may be me discussing this with you is not really the best use of my time because you might not get it in the end anyway… Do you really not find anything about the new design to actually be ugly? It’s not that I can’t believe you, it’s that I guess I would like to think that most people that are not in a design related professions can still actually tell good design from bad design

that’s a horrible way to talk to another human being. Honestly you should kind of be ashamed. Also for what you’re saying you think that they spend five years making laptops to please people like me – you have no idea about anything about me. What gives you the right to make any assumptions like that? At the end if you must know the best design of the MacBook Pro laptop is actually 12 years old and I own it. So no nothing they did in the last five years was actually a good call.

Ah, so instead of articulating your own statement into a useful discussion, let’s just demean others. Got it.

Wait, you said others are horrible, while you also demean others? Genius. :D

This is a long way of saying you don't want to say why you think it's "ugly." Sir, are you aware that this is a forum and that you started this thread? You know, the thing you do on a forum when you want to engage in a dialogue with other people? ? If you're in a design related profession that 'deals with beauty on a day to day basis' I would imagine you're capable of describing a design beyond "it's ugly" or "it's beautiful"

You: *starts thread on a forum* Why is the new laptop so ugly?

Us: Looks fine to me, what don't you like about it?

You: I don't want to tell you, I just know it's ugly because I deal with beauty on a day to day basis.

For what it's worth I too deal with beauty on a day to day basis: me. I am the most beautiful person in the world.
