Typically both get pretty decent increases in speed. iPhone 2G -> 3G and 5S -> 6 had the smallest bumps in speed (with the former having no bump at all)

The one exception was 4s to 5 which was a huge jump in performance as well.
I don't see how you are surprised by this? I predicted this to happen, just as it happened to the iPad 3 and the 4. When apple increased the screen resolution on the iPad 3 and iPhone 4, of course the guts of the phone would not withhold the increased demand over os upgrades.
The same thing will happen to the first gen iPad pro. The specs sound great on paper. But just wait a year and see the massive jump.

Speak for yourself. I've used a 6 for the past year with no issues, no lag, no stutter. So no, not everyone had a bad experience.
Actually I've been saying this for a while, but my focus was the lack of RAM rather than the power of the A8.
Good catch on the keynote. I also agree that it's one of the lesser quality iPhones I've used. With the cheaper aluminum body & the constantly moving front facing camera (went through 1 display swap & 2 device swaps & still moved), I couldn't wait to get rid of my iP6 to upgrade.

Well the discussion is not about the best or fastest. It's about the minuscule amount of hardware increase from the previous model.
Oh please, I've had my 6 Plus since a few days after launch and despite the safari reloads, I and many others thought it was (and is) a great phone. Is it as good as the 6s Plus? No, but that's the nature of tech.
Similarly, I got an iPad 3 and used it for years without worrying about all the problems everyone complained about.
It's clear the 6 Plus was a bad buy for you. But your opinion isn't fact.
Why would I possibly lie about that. You're free to disagree but that system lagged behind my operations and my finger, it was not as brisk and in stride as iOS or my 6+. And I disabled just about everything I could.
When you level up your phone or RPG character, you have to distribute your XP as best you can. Last year they upgrade the screen so didn't have as many XP left over for the CPU. This year, all the points went to the CPU.
In all seriousness, they do have to design with certain price points in mind. So when they upgraded the screen they probably had to skimp a little in other areas (compared to this time.)

Well if browser & app reloading, lag, freezing and crashing are what makes a great phone for you then fair play. My two generations older iPhone was a far more pleasing device to use. In fact the 6+ was so very bad that I sold it after 9.5 months and I have never, ever done that with an iPhone before. When you say that the 6+ and iPad 3 were great then I question how much you actually used them.
For the 6+, I used it every day for a year, multiple hours a day. For the iPad 3 I used it for several years. They were not perfect devices but they were still high quality. The hyperbole on this forum is exhausting sometimes.
Then don't buy the regular version. But the s version instead if CPU increase is your thing. For me, iPhone 6 with iOS 9 is still very smooth.
"Under powered" compared to what? The 6s, which is the fastest smartphone ever, by a wide margin?
It's true that cpu was not the major innovation of the 6. Doesn't mean it was a bad chip (15% better than the very capable a7 is quite good) and even less so that anyone got "hosed."
