FYI: Applecare+

As with a many people I pre-ordered the iPhone4S online. I was not able to get though on the apple site so went with At&t. After my order was placed I realized that ATT only sells applecare and not the new applecare+ which is not listed any where on there site.

This morning I spent some time with ATT and then Applecare.

Applecare support stated you will have 30 days to purchase applecare+. However this has to be done in the physical store. Due to them needing to verify your phones condition before buying applecare+

Ordered a 4S using the Apple Store app and was never given the option for AppleCare+. I got this email a few hours ago:

Dear Apple Customer,

Thank you for your recent iPhone purchase at the Apple Online Store.

We would like to let you know that every iPhone comes with one year of
hardware repair coverage through its limited warranty and up to
90 days of complimentary support. AppleCare+ for iPhone extends your
coverage to two years from the original purchase date of your iPhone
and adds up to two incidents of accidental damage coverage, each
subject to a $49 service fee.

We noticed you weren’t given the opportunity to add AppleCare+ to your
iPhone. If you would like to extend your coverage for only $99, please
reply to this email.

Thank you for shopping with Apple.

Sincerely,
Apple Online Store Team

I replied to the email but havent got a response or noticed any changes to my order.

I called Apple earlier today to ask about Applecare+, because I didn't see the option to order it when I preordered my phone, either. I asked if they could add it on to my order now, but she said no. But she said I would be able to get it once I activate my phone. I think she said I would have to call them with my serial # and they could set it up for me then. Sorry I can't remember the exact details...I had to go through a couple different people to get an answer. But I told her I wanted to make sure I could get it and she said yes, absolutely I could get it once I get the phone.

You won't, however, be able to purchase it anytime within the first year, as you've been able to in the past.

From what I understand in order to purchase AppleCare+ post purchase who have to go into an Apple along with your phone. The reason for the time at purchase clause is that Apple wants to make sure that the phone is not damaged at the time of purchase.

I pre-ordered about an hour ago through Sprint and there was an option to include AppleCare. I declined that offer after having done some research; it sounds to me that insurance (including loss and theft) through the Worth Ave Group is a much better deal and that's what I plan on getting once the phone arrives. I haven't insured anything through them before, but the reviews I've found have all been positive (so far) and it seems more economical and sensible to me than AppleCare given that they actually do cover loss and theft. The deductible is fifty bucks. I'll admit to not being totally clear on what their yearly rate is as they haven't updated their site for the 4s yet, but I'm guessing it's a hundred bucks a year as the rate for the 4 is $89.

never mind, i'll take the risk, and if i do break it, i'll just shell out the additional $230. I think of it as a $80 gamble. I've lost way more money then that at my recent casino trip lol

Now that's funny! Good way of looking at it...

I just bought AppleCare+ with my iPhone 4S 64GB Black. I'm mega-careful with all of my things and in 3 years and 2 months of owning my iPhone 3G 16GB White, I've never dropped it once...and it's been naked the whole time.

However, the Wi-Fi on my iPhone 3G did quit working 20 months in and it would have been nice if I had AppleCare. So I was planning on buying AppleCare this go-around and figured "what the heck".....why not spend the extra $30 (with a $49 replacement fee) as a cheap insurance policy in case I drop the 4S and break something.

Now I can use it naked with confidence...

:D

I got an email from Apple last night saying they were sorry it wasn't offered to me at time of sale on their website and told me to reply to this email if I wanted to add it.

Applecare+ isn't a very good value. At $99 plus a $50 per incident deductible you are actually spending $150 for a replacement. Out of warranty replacements are $230.

For an $80 difference, I'll just try and not drop or dunk the new phone. Spending $100 to try and save $80 doesn't seem like a good value.

This is assumes that you place no value in the extended warranty portion of the Applecare+ product. Traditional Applecare without the accidental damage rider is $69 dollars, so the accidental damage rider is only $30 plus a $49 deductible per claim. That is not too bad if you find value in the extended warranty and support that the traditional Applecare already offered.

Assuming this unwritten out of warranty pricing continues, what is the iPhone replacement cost of the 32GB? What about the 64GB?

It's insurance, or as Martin Lawrence wants it to be called, "In case **** happens". $99, which is about $4.13 for each month in your contract, for two years of protection from possibly paying upwards of $749.

For some people, it's the peace of mind that makes it worth it.

Ive been speaking with Apple sales, my Apple Store and customer care regarding AppleCare+ post purchase and there seems to be a lack of details given to them on how they should handle it since it's a new product for them. Based on their memos there is a strict requirement in purchasing the phone and + at the same time but many people are in a situation where it wasn't available at time of purchase and there's no official solution.

For most then this can be resolved in store (Carrier Store/AppleStore) since it only requires adding an item to an existing order. For me, I preordered at Best Buy and they dont offer Applecare+ but since Best Buy is an authorized reseller then I'm hoping Apple will be more flexible on the rules.

If you're someone who is planning on selling the 4S and buying the 5 next our at full price (since you'd still be locked in a contract) the AppleCare+ would help you in getting top dollar.

I know personally I wouldn't buy a year old iPhone from a private seller unless it had some type of warranty on it.

I would like to add this to my order before I receive my phone. Has anyone had any luck calling and having them add this to an existing order yet?

I was thinking the same thing. $100 for AppleCare+ and $50 per incident for a replacement means you've paid Apple:

$100 if NOTHING ever happens to your phone.
$150 if you need a replacement due to accidental damage.

Without AppleCare+, there's a good chance you'll never need to replace your phone at all due to accidental damage, so you're up $100. If you do however accidentally damage it, you're out $200 for out of warranty replacement (which I've used before), which is a mere $50 more than you'd have given Apple under AppleCare+.

Doesn't seem logical to purchase AppleCare+ to me unless you plan on going caseless and have a track record of ruining 2 phones/year.

I was told the same thing. Make sure you call 1.800.myapple BEFORE activating the 4s with the necessary information (serial number)

hey. anyone knew whats the detail of ATT insurance on 4s?

seems applecare+ doesnt include lost of your phone ? :D

I am going to buy a squaretrade warranty as I do for all of my fancy expensive gadgets. I am yet to find a warranty as good or better than theirs.
